I've needed a PC for a while and just got an itch to buy one...So, last week i saw the 27" iMac and wanted it, so i bought it without thinking...

My issue is that i realize it's now February and 2012...The iMac i just bought is a 2011 model, correct? Which means i'm sure another model will soon be released. If this is true, should i just return my current iMac and wait for the new one? I have until Wednesday of next week to return it.

Do you think this is a good idea, or will it be a long time before another iMac? Also, i assume the newer iMac will be impressive. I'd hate to see a better design when i could have waited.

Thanks in advance.

What your looking for in a 2012 iMac is native USB 3.0, and a better BTO SSD. The 20% performance boost will only be noticeable in optimized software tests. In day to day email, www, etc you won't see anything special. Otherwise, the current model is a great machine..altho, I would not buy it today since the new one is due within the next 4-6 months. I think you will see a delay in it's release so that the new Mac Pro can be released first picking up the sales from prosumers who might not want to wait for the new iMac

Thanks for all of the advice.

I definitely should have done research prior to purchasing the Mac. I had no.intentions on getting a computer that day. I saw it at best buy, liked it, then bought it...After the purchase I started researching about it and that's how this happened, lol.

I think it's a good idea I returned so I can see what's coming out in 3-5 months. I definitely don't need the computer, it's a want. In the meantime maybe I'll just buy the new ipad that comes out next month...That's cheaper and should hold me over for a while, lol.

Buying a 2011 model now will give you about three years before you start thinking your iMAC is getting "long-in-the-tooth". That doesn't mean you have to replace it in 2015 but the "I gotta have a better/newer model demon" will rear its head.

If you hold out for the new 2012 model; the demon may not appear until 2016. And if the technology is a significant jump (say a well implemented touch screen, 3D video card, etc) you may be well satisfied past 2016.

BTW - I am really impressed with the HP TouchSmart All-In-One. However, I need to buy some type of Apple PC to gain experience for my job (2012 performance objective).

If the 2012 refresh is only a ~ 20% bump in CPU and or GPU speed, USB 3, etc., then you can choose to buy a discounted 2011 model.

I have purchased/built way too many PCs over the past 35 years (many with incremental performance improvements). I now (finally) am able to hold my own against the demon.....lol.

Lol, know what you mean by the demon. I always find something I like better about the newer stuff and it makes me feel like what I have is garbage, lol.

I do the same with phones. I buy a new one every year and sell my old one.

This will be my first apple purchase though...I'm probably going to start getting apple everything. I'm just going through a different phase I guess, lol.
