When they activate a customer's new iPhone at purchase in the store (making sure to not get fingerprints on the plastic when the Specialist handles it for those 2 minutes, of course) no one insists on upgrading that 4.0.1 leftover to 4.0.2 and that's all the proof needed to verify that what I'm saying is true. The same goes (went) for the iPads, btw.

Gotta go to bed now, have a nice night.

You know there are 79 countries outside of the US that sell iPhone, NONE of which come locked to a carrier, none of which are activated in the store. Just an FYI so you know just because one country does it, it's certainly NOT the norm.

Anyhow, back to point. Yes, Apple does do their best to attempt to make sure the devices they sell get flashed. Otherwise Grandma Nancy, buying her first iPhone would get home and say "wheres my wireless printing feature I saw on the sign advertised as part of 4.2?" ... and it becomes confusing. Apple is a what they advertise is what you get. They keep their stock of computers and devices upgraded to current versions. If you don't believe me, go into the store and find a iPhone with 4.0.1 on it. You won't. Or even better, wait until next week and try it with 4.1... every iPhone will be 4.1 in the store's inventory will be 4.1 within 48 hours of the launch of the OS. It's SOP from Apple corporate... but you clearly are a skeptic, so go in and look for yourself.

I do hope for your sake that you get lucky and it has 4.0.1. Worst case we'll all be wanting a JB next week when 4.1 comes out, so we'll be right by your side in wishing and hoping. :)

Well thank you! 4.1 will probably arrive by the time my iPhone comes (if the seller won't cancel the shipment, which I'm assuming he won't just to prepare for worst-case scenario)... Maybe there will be a new solution for my problem. I'll be sure to check the serial number... as someone else suggested, the serial may be a clue to its firmware...

Of course you won't find 4.0.1 in the Apple store-- all the kids that came in and jb'd the demo units were driving them nuts!

They will send old product back when a FEATURE update is made available, as in a major release. There were no new advertised functions of 4.0.2, so there was nothing for granny to worry about. A leftover CPU with Leopard on it when Snow Leopard was released is a different story entirely.

And yes, within 48 hours of the OS release, OK, that's just because stock comes in just that frequently. They are not halting iPhone sales for 2 days when they can barely keep up with demand just so they can send them to a far off clean room somewhere when the software update is readily available to all customers free via iTunes.

Alright, NOW I'm going to bed, you win. :) Have a good night, and nice chatting with you...

You should be hoping very strongly for a 4.0.1 unit because with 4.1 will come a new baseband and your new solution might be a long wait..

I'm not calling you a liar as you're likely correct, but I'm curious where you determine that 4.1 will come with a new baseband? Or are you just saying it's likely?

Because the beta's of 4.1 contains a baseband upgrade? Just a hunch...

EDIT: Seems the GM contains the same upgrade BB but ultrasn0w has already been updated for it..

I can't speak because my foot is now in my mouth. LOL... good catch.

So here's a question.... baseband affects unlock, not jailbreak, correct? So I have a UK version which is factory unlocked. So will the same baseband apply to me or do they release a new baseband for Factory Unlocked models as well? The iPhone 4 is the first FACTORY unlocked unit I have had, so I'm unsure how that aspect works.

Thanks!

I'm not an unlocker or up to date on what happens with UK phones so this much is a guess. UK versions receive the same BB upgrade and it has no effect on factory unlocked phones. BB only effects a phone unlockability, yes it has no effect on JB's.

What is it about an iphone on AT&T that locks it if the baseband and firmware are the same as the countries that sells them unlocked? Is it a boot process that locks it or what?

It's software base hence why ultrasn0w works in the first place. Apple has the ability to unlock any iphone. Their agreement with AT&T is what makes that impossible.

Okay, makes sense. I guess it must work different than other handsets, I remember in the old days (or even recent days with Blackberry, HTC, etc), you just unlock a device and it's never re-locked.

That's how it is for all factory unlocked phones. Like I said I'm not all in the know about the UK but I believe they have regulations for having to allow unlocks. I could be off on that one though..

The US needs such regulations, but first the networks have to all use the same technology for it to be worth it. Sounds like it may finally come once all the carriers are on LTE, but who knows. It's just so backwards in the US.

True and I'm not sure if we will run into this again with frequencies incomparability on LTE either when running an unsupported devices on that network. We could likely be in the same boat again. It also doesn't mean that the wireless providers aren't going to go separate directions again on the next generation network after LTE..

Not being mostly GSM puts the US behind the rest of the world.

Even if the LTE technology is different frequencies I think it's fair to assume multi-band handsets will converge devices... or maybe that's just wishful thinking. lol...
