Nothing says love like buying an out dated tablet to save money on the person who loved you and raised you unconditionally your entire life.

And nothing says you're on the rag like bashing someone for buying a nice & thoughtful gift for their mother.

Nice that you were able to do that for her. :) I want to get my mom a kindle or a nook. An iPad would be a bit much in my case lol.

Oh my god, I have no words to describe what an idiot you are. "Idiot" is about as accurate as the word "genius" would be to describe a rock. I hope we don't share the same universe.

so non Asian mothers don't care about their children?

It has to do with the culture in Asian families. Living in poverty and working hard to take care of their children so that someday their children can be successful in America. That is why asians dominate the science field so much at 4-year colleges and ultimately a health profession.

Common with indians too.

Terrible analogy. Most people think I'm stupid because I'm really smart. Stupid people don't get smart people.

The only thing worse than a stupid person is a group of them. And they congregate at this forum.

Fortunately my mother isn't as shallow as you and I know she'll love the device and appreciate the thought behind it rather than act like a child because of what it isn't.

I'm pretty sure you are just trolling but if you are serious I really feel sorry for you because it is apparent you think a price tag is a indicator of how much someone loves you. In which case your parents raised you wrong and instead of showing you love they paid you off because they couldn't be bothered.

Wait, you're giving her crap because she'd buy the best possible product for her Mother? Really?

I personally read her comment as sarcasm.. I seem to be the only one though.

The 'best possible' is a subjective idea. I'm 61 and have been using reading glasses for a while. To be honest I really don't see much difference between the display on my new iPad vs my iPad 2. It's probably because I'm older and my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be. The text is a bit crisper but not enough to make a huge difference. I upgraded for the increased RAM and LTE. But then I'm a geek and was a geek when it wasn't cool to be one and specs do matter to me.

And even a referb can be a significant $$$ outlay. We 'moms' don't like it when our kids go into debt, especially for us.

OP, I'm sure your mon will love it and use it a lot. She did a good job raising you and must be very proud. I know I always am proud of my son when he does something nice for someone else. I raised him that way and it's nice to see that it worked. Kudos!

I hope I do not get bashed with this, but with Mama's eyes, she needs that resolution, so that text can be larger.

She will love it. I bought my mother one last October after I saw she enjoyed playing with her grandchildren's IPods. Apparently it comes out every evening for a couple of hours for a quick game / puzzle / other. She is in her mid 70's and as I grew up, she often used my Spectrum / Commodore / etc etc for gaming (chuckie egg / Sonic etc). Oldest gamer in town?

He is doing better than me. I just hacked my Moms $99 fire sale HP Touchpad by butting a Cynagenmod version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich on it. Mean while i'm enjoying the new iPad 64GB AT&T LTE lol.

But in fairness to me I already got her a Mac Mini, Imac, iPod Classic, iPod touch, Apple TV, and other apple crap over the years. (she bought her own iPhone).

i bought an iPad2 @full price for my 70-year old parents last year, while I only had an iPad1. Beat that :p

A speed course iPad usage of an hour and they're already on facebook and watching and reading news daily.

(in comparison it took me 3 years to get them to learn how to use the remote for their DVD-player. And all they can do is still play, skip, stop & enter.... and that's only because I've marked those button with stickers)

I bought a iPad 2 at Christmas for my 76 yr old Father. He absoulutely loves it. He picked it up in no time and uses it like a pro now. It is great thing you are doing for your mom. She will love the iPad 2.

Melissa deserves crap for that butthead comment - maybe she thinks all the old iPads should be destroyed because they aren't worth having any more.

My 76 year old dad uses his iPad 1 - 32GB every day. He gets through 4 long hours of dialysis three day a week by listening to music on Pandora, reading books, watching movies, online banking, and keeping up with the news/weather on the internet.

I showed him my new iPad with retina display before returning it to Apple because I thought he might benefit from the better screen and he couldn't see enough difference to care. He is still too impressed with the original iPad - he has a 10 year old Escalade he is still in love with as well.

If we had waited to for Apple to put a Retina display in the iPad before getting him one then he would have been missing out on a awesome device that he has been using and enjoying for the last year and 1/2.

The iPad 1 and 2 have been thoroughly enjoyed by millions of folks young and old and will continue to be enjoyed and appreciated by anyone fortunate enough to have one - The OP gave his Mom something she will surely love.

She is saying that I'm a tight ass and implying that if I really loved my mom I'd buy the ipad 3, she isn't saying she would buy the new ipad for her mother where'd you get that from?

Thanks everyone for the kind (mostly) comments. Shipping estimates march 29th for delivery can't wait!

I got my iPad 3 last Friday and ordered an iPad 2 for mom on Monday. I bought her a NetBook 3 years ago but it's getting old.. Figured I'd bring her over to the dark side. It will be easier for her to FaceTime with the kids and the screen quality is much better than the NetBook. Black 16 gb refurb from apple for 350$ is a sweet deal. With iCloud and a Dropbox setup she will have plenty of storage. I get to load it up with pics of the kids and a few movies she likes. Now the question is should I jailbreak it first?
