Yes, iTunes actually edits the ID3 tags in MP3 files. The proof of this can be had two different ways:

1. Do a Get Info on an MP3 you've edited in iTunes. You'll see it display the new ID3 metadata.

2. Get yourself another audio app, even something like, say Audion, and look at the ID3 tag in it, and you'll see it's changed.

I know this is an old post but not much has changed. Tag & Rename is the best Windows app for retagging large mp3 collections. There's really nothing in OSX (And Media Rage blows) for doing that. iTunes is really really slow process.

I am slowly finding out that using a Mac means adjusting your thinking and the way you compute around the computer, and not the other way around. Just like religion. :p

Instead of worrying about ID3 tags, just put the freaking music in iTunes and setup names there. Who gives a crap if it modifies the ID3 tags or just the iTunes library? iTunes is the /only/ program I use to listen to music, so it matters not.

I give a crap, because there is a universe outside of iWorld.

Some people have more diverse needs, and we are not satisfied with swallowing whatever is fed to us, because we are used to better things. It's like telling a plumber to just use a Smart car because it gets him from A to B. Who give a crap if he can't bring his tools with him!

I'm glad that iTunes meets all of your expectations. Not everyone is like you.

Grrrrr:mad: I just lost 10's of hours of work editing my tags using iTunes. I dragged and dropped all of my music from my Uni PC to my Mac and "poof" there goes all of that hard work :(

Is there a a way to grab the iTunes storage files from my PC to get all of my old edited tags back?

iTunes is actually *awesome* for tagging ID3 tags. I do all of that in iTunes for my 160gb music collection.

Too bad iTunes is the biggest piece of bloatware that apple has in its software lineup. They need to create a simple application strictly for playing music. I use Vox instead (10-20mb memory usage).
