Just bought my first Mac... new OS next month? Noo!

Doesn't apple give a discounted upgrade if you buy within a few weeks of a release or is he too far out from a projected release to qualify?

> (older versions than what came installed on a Mac cannot be installed)

Not exaclty phrased right.

Older versions than when was around when the hardware 1st shipped cannot be installed.

So unless Apple updates it's entire hardware line on the release of 10.5 (please! I an thinking of a new mac soon!) then a lot of machines than come with 10.5 will be able to run 10.4 just fine. (getting the disks of course is a different matter)

I just bought a new Macbook a few days ago and am LOVING it.

But... I didn't do enough homework before making my purchase and just recently found that Leopard is being released next month. I'm guessing I need to pony up the $100+ just like everyone else *??* Just hoping that maybe someone can tell me differently. You can even lie :p

congrats on the switch, you'll never go back...

next time, use the Buyers Guide here on MacRumors.

long live :apple:

If you want Leopard, you might consider returning your current Macbook and repurchasing in a month when Leopard is out.

Yeah, don't do that.

People should take responsibility for their own actions and not make Apple or anyone else pay.

Like others said you don't want Leopard until December anyway. And it's only $130 (if you're in Canada) anyway.

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the light side.

Cheers.

You should become a student for a day or two and purchase it than.. ;) Problem solved.. I'm glad my girlfriend is in medschool for ETERNITY!

Than is a reference to degree. Then is a reference to chronological sequencing;)

I'm a little worried about the future of the student discount. The old iWork used to be $79 regular and $39 student. However, the latest version increased the student price dramatically. It's new price is $71 for students. I sure hope this isn't the road Leopard is headed for...

Ditto!

To the OP: I think you did just fine, and actually better than waiting. If you got the first Leopard installed you would not have any choice but to run Leopard (older versions than what came installed on a Mac cannot be installed), and until the first bugs are worked out that is not an enviable position to be in. I would much rather have a fully working version of Tiger until at least 10.5.3 or later is released.
