First impression: pretty awesome computer. Trackpad feels a little flimsy compared to my last MBP (I had an early 2011 back in the day) but this thing flies.

Question: when I open the “about this Mac” thing from the finder menu, it only lists the intel integrated graphics, not the Radeon 560x; is that normal? The computer definitely has one.

Mine (same specs), purchased at launch doesn't have Radeon 560X listed either.

Sorry but I have to call out obvious BS here. I have one for work and they're great machines. I get that it's trendy to hate Apple but calling it "the worst laptop you've ever owned" is nonsense and you know it.

I find that statement to be somewhat condescending.

I take him at his word that it's the worse one he has ever had and I take you at your word that it's a great machine for you.

Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought that MRF was here to, you know, talk about products we enjoy. Personally, I don't get as much joy from insulting people or ridiculing things. I just avoid them or return them. My $.02 YMMV.

The irony of coming to "MAC" rumors to spread your hate about Apple products is just delightful. I'm partially torn ya know? On one hand we get a few random internet strangers telling me something is junk. On the other hand, I'm looking at 7 strong years of using an iPhone, iPad, and MacBook together (iPhone started for me back in like 2009 maybe). How do I ever choose?

That’s what I figured, even the display model at the apple store did this. They literally don’t make a 15” without a dedicated GPU anyway so I know it’s in there, but wanted to be sure.

Kinda nice to hear the good. Well done! I'm really wanting a new machine so the positives really help to hear, and I love to b#%^* about the company management, but deep down am all-in on Mac. It can't hurt to have some kind of back up, if it can serve other needs.

So many haters in here LOL. I'm on like 45 days of my new 15" MBP and I love it just like I loved my 2013.

Just remember, the internet always brings a disproportionate amount of people with negative feedback than positive. Whether it's a forum on here, online reviews for restaurants, whatever. Negative experiences are far more inclined to reach out for help or post their anger.

How much of a difference can you see between the 2013 and 2018?

I've had my 2018 15" MBP (the base stock model with i7, 16GB, 256GB ATI555x) since August 2018 and it has been one of the best laptops I've ever owned. It's very fast, the screen is brilliant, and the onboard sound is also quite good. I use it almost daily for my job (computer consultant) to connect remotely to my customer's PCs, Macs and Servers and to setup networking equipment and in my free time I like to write. Also, I do occasionally use the web cam and I don't think it's too bad regardless of it being only 720p. I use it with Discord and FaceTime and it's fine for that, for sure. I've written over 80000 words of a novel on it with Scrivener, so I've put a lot of time on the keyboard and I love it! Previously, I owned a couple 12" MacBooks (2015 & 2017) and a 13" Pro (2016) and this gen 3 keyboard is definitely the best of them so far. No issues for me.

Good luck with your new 15"! I'm sure you will love it.

Significant. I went from top end 2013 to top end 2018. Performance wise it's vastly more powerful. I'm now back to a fresh, monster battery with hours and hours. The screen is nicer as well.

I should probably fire up a game on the new GPU and see how it does. Not really a gamer anymore though.

If you don't mind me asking, have you had any keyboard issues on your 2015 12" macbook? I've yet to see anyone claim otherwise. Pretty much all the people I've read online w/ 12" macbooks have had to replace their keyboards at least once.

Yes, three times on two MacBook 2015.

I’ve been holding off as much as I can but my 2013 is starting to feel it’s age so I’m debating on selling the 2013 and buying the new one.

I traded mine right to apple for like $555. I could have done ebay for upwards of $700 minus tons of fees, but why bother? Didn't want the hassle. New top end MBP was like $2800 after tax minus $555 and then on a 0% barclay. Will pay it off in a few months. Winner!

I can tell you it’s a significant upgrade from what I had with a top spec late 2011 model. Not that this should surprise anyone really.

Just opened mine today and started playing around. First foray into the Mac world, but this thing is fast. No issues other than learning the intricacies of MacOS. So far, I'm happy with it.

Good luck and enjoy your new baby ;)

I think the update to these Macbook Pros with quad core for the 13" and 6 core for the 15" is what's helped and at the same time is often underrated. The 13" is as powerful as last years 15" but in a smaller form factor, while the 15" is even more powerful with 6 core processors.

This leads to the question how can they possibly make them any faster in 2019, a redesign is probably coming next year but this years update will be interesting.

The solid state drive is also outstanding. My 2013 wasn’t slow by any means. I just wanted an upgrade. I was still doing photo and video editing on it and playing some games.

How often do you hear other computers going 5 years and not being total dinosaurs?

I picked up a 15” top spec (baseline, no extras, so i7, 512GB, 16GB RAM, and the 560x graphics card. Plan on dabbling in video editing.

Any accessories I should be looking at? Case recommendations etc?

I’m super excited about this computer.
One thing that I always recommend, no matter what the laptop. External keyboard and mouse/trackpad whatever you prefer.
Unless you use your laptop on the go all the time, they are great purchases no matter what the make and model of a laptop.
I use my latest laptop for 4.5 years now. On the outside it looks like the day it was first unboxed. I use it every day, sometimes there are weeks between restarts. It's not an Apple computer, but that doesn't matter. Using external input devices protects the laptop from wear and tear, accidents, etc.

I would also recommend opening the laptop, cleaning it and even replacing the thermal paste after 2-3 years. Obviously only on models that this is possible. This is btw the only reason my next computer I don't plan it to be an Apple (or other maker) model that doesn't allow you to do so. Being able to clean it and replace the thermal paste is vital for a long life for the computer.

Obviously if one plans on replacing it after a year or two, that's not such an issue.
Though having it look in perfect condition definitely doesn't hurt in its resale value.

Apple use the best SSDs on the market, I don’t own a full SSD machine, my iMac 2012 is the Fushion Drive.

I agree tho, Mac’s last for years! I had a MacBook Pro from 2011, it saw me through university and even the first part of my career. It died late last year, after 7 and a half years of all day everyday use! It was by far my favourite laptop I ever owned (before that it was Windows machines that were just trash).

My iMac late 2012, is still working great. I will upgrade when the new ones come out tho, hopefully with a redesign.

Glad that you are happy with the machine :) Mac’s really are great! MacOS Mojave is so far my favourite MacOS.

Ya that makes good sense. I considered trading it into Apple however goroostr pays slightly more

That makes good sense honestly. I would probably use GoRoostr instead of trading into Apple since they pay slightly more than Apples trade in program but not much more. I never thought about using the Barclays card though, that actually makes good sense at 0%. I would probably get a higher end model with 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, and Vega 20. Thanks for the feedback!

Report back to us on how your machine has been working!

Well so far so good. It's not yet been a week but I'm fantastically pleased with it so far. This machine absolutely rips!

I've been editing 4K video clips in FCPx and DaVinci Resolve, absolutely brilliant performance.

I really actually love the feel of the keyboard, the short travel keys feel great to type with. Fingers crossed that I can keep it going.

All told, my first impressions are that this is a very nice piece of hardware. Much more "premium" feel to it than my last MBP, which I also really really liked.

Oh and one other thing.

Charging the computer from any of the USB-C ports...BRILLIANT. I can plug in from either side now, no worries about sitting in a position that puts a plug on the correct side of the computer.

Great to hear! Thanks!

Yeah, I have no interest or need for the built in camera. I use a GoPro to make MTB edits, hoping to up my game a bit there.

Thanks for the advice on the connectors, I appreciate that.
Nice man! Where do you live? Serious rider here in NorCal, just upgraded my Gopro to the 7. Do you have a youtube channel? I just bought the MBP, and didn't like what I read in this thread haha. Upgraded from the late '12. Love the MBP so far.

Hey! Yeah, I live in Utah, near Hurricane and Virgin (Redbull Rampage territory). Grew up here and just moved back after a hellish stint in New England. It’s great to be back to a legitimate MTB area again.

I’m also running the hero7 these days. No YouTube channel yet, but considering it. You got one?
