I'm beginning to think that I should get one from the retail store rather than on-line. Reports are better than Anandtech indicates.

At least then it's returnable if it's too hot. And with some begging you can get the restocking fee waived.

I'm REALLY surprised a "I'm waiting for the i5/i7 MBP update" thread hasn't been started yet.

Really? Never? Not even when encoding movies with Handbrake?

That's impressive.

My evidence is a little more than anecdotal. See this post on another forum I made about my little trip:

http://forums.applenova.com/showpost.php?p=686144&postcount=140

Why would I be encoding a movie with handbrake on my lap? That's massively battery hogging and it's faster plugged in anyway. Reread my last sentence in that post again.

I said anecdotal because I recognize that my story isn't scientific in any way. It wasn't to detract from your own story. Sorry if it came off that way.

No, I misunderstood your post. I thought you were saying that your current computer ran so cool that you never could get it to an uncomfortable heat level in your lap -- but i see that we both agree that this isn't the case.

My main concern was how hot the bottom casing got under light usage. Email/browsing, youtube videos, and Word/iTunes open. This is the kind of work I'd be doing with it on my lap, and it seems that it doesn't get too hot (even the i7 15" model) which is great news for me. I don't care if the bottom gets hot when I put it on my desk to transcode a video or do some work in Photoshop or Final Cut. Especially since the palm rests don't get warm at all.

These MBPs don't run nearly as hot as the first few revisions of MBPs. I remember I couldn't use my core duo MBP on my lap even if i was just web browsing.

I'd hold out anyways, this refresh seems more of an intermediary between a proper full refresh. I'm waiting for the next round of MBPs.

My new 15inch was surprisingly hot when i was simply using iphoto. But i couldnt even hear the fans even when everything was quiet. i am unsure if this is good as i would have thought the fans would try to sop heating?? however, my battery really isnt that affected.

i think processor would burn in smokes seconds after fan stopped working. Fans should be working.:D Fans being quiet should be great, i will be switching to a Mac from a tower desktop pc. I can't imagine a quiet computer since my current tower pc sounds like a rolls royce turbine jet engine, you can literally hear it from the corridor in my apartment which is approximately 6-7 meters away from the computer :) i can't use it at night, it keeps people awake :):D

How hot is hot? like to the point where you can't even touch it? or was it just mildly warm? :)

My 17" i5 runs amazingly cool!

But it has a screen flicker similar to the iMacs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I know why Apple sent out an immediate firmware update for the graphics card. ARGH!! Anyone else have this issue?

When does it flicker?

If we are going to continue the anecdotal evidence, my last gen 13" MBP has NEVER been uncomfortably hot on my lap. Again though, it all comes down to what you are doing.

well maybe you have super thick jeans. or or messed up legs so you cant feel heat as well?

After reading the review on Anandale I decided to cancel my order. It's not good to hear that the thing is even hotter on the lap than the last model. The article stated that cooler Arrandales are coming later this year. I think I'll wait until then, or until there are enough real world reports that these things are not burning hot.

Well the blindingly obvious answer is don't use it on your lap.

Apple chose to call it a notebook rather than a laptop for a reason. I know the manuals only suggest that you don't use it on your lap, but IMHO anyone who uses a notebook on their lap is asking for trouble.

Same here. I was also a bit disappointed that Apple didn't put a proper IPS panel in new MBP's, though I think it is only a matter of time. We'll see what happens this fall....

I'm running now a 2008 Penryn. Was was your old one? His hot was relative to the last unibody I suppose. Compared to what I have no, maybe it is cooler.

What are your temps when doing more than surfing?

Well my last one got to 90c while having itunes on and web surfing but that was an 07 MBP. i havent put i stat on this one but i can feel it

Warmer? Cooler? Is the change significant?

Would you mind installing iStat and telling us some temps and what kind of usage? Which MBP do you have?

why is this even an issue.. what's hot to me can be cool to you cuz you live in iceland or something and i'm melting in arizona desert...

if it doesn't start a fire.. it's not hot enough for the fanboys..

Honestly, I think if heat is an issue for someone with these high performance laptops its an excuse to not get one.

Not taking a jab, just that I would expect that using a system for hours on your lap is going to be hot.

I use a lap desk or use a table.

Surfing the web and watching videos for hours on your lap is not going to make the laptop hot on your lap (flash may be a different story).

My base 15" core i5 has been on my lap for a good 2 hours.

Basic internet surfing and a handful of youtube clips.

It feels much cooler than my mid-2007 whitebook I use to have. Obviously more intensive tasks like video encoding or gaming will heat it up.

I just checked my activity monitor - flash is using 65% of my cpu. I really do hate flash.

Flash really is hideous. Bring on html5 :)
