Good to hear!My base 15" core i5 has been on my lap for a good 2 hours.
Basic internet surfing and a handful of youtube clips.
It feels much cooler than my mid-2007 whitebook I use to have. Obviously more intensive tasks like video encoding or gaming will heat it up.
65% of an i5 CPUI just checked my activity monitor - flash is using 65% of my cpu. I really do hate flash.
For a comparison: My original C2D MBP runs ~55°C idle and ~80°C under load according to smcFanControl.I have an i7 15" and even after gaming I've never seen the CPU go above 50 degrees.

Even if the i5/i7 models run a tiny bit hotter under heavy load than the 2009 did, they're still much cooler than the early models.
Too hot? And you haven't even used the machine, only read about it online? Ugh.
If you're that apprehensive, then truly you should wait until the first adopters get theirs, and assess. You've got to wait just a bit, don't be the monkey mind.
Prob things are fine as this isn't a major refresh at all. But if you are that skiddish for god's sake, wait a minute!![]()
Yea I'm apprehensive. I have trouble spending $2,000 on a BTO machine (matte i5's are not in the stores) that cannot even be returned if it's too hot/loud. You investment bankers should get your own threads.
I have taken the time to see them in person It's impossible to get a good reading on this from trying it out in the stores. Always way too loud in the stores to hear the fans.
Plus the whole point of this thread IS to get some advice from the early adopters.
Warmer? Cooler? Is the change significant?
Would you mind installing iStat and telling us some temps and what kind of usage? Which MBP do you have?
Fan noise is not a problem at all, according to the reviews.I have taken the time to see them in person It's impossible to get a good reading on this from trying it out in the stores. Always way too loud in the stores to hear the fans.
Try an older 1gen MacBook Air like the one I own and that will show you what hot really is.Too hot, huh? Try an older PowerBook G4 like the one I owned and that will show you what hot really is.

50ºC is what my 2009 C2D reaches when watching films!![]()
my cpu idles at about 65ºC (whitebook SR late 2007) and goes up to about 80ºC when watching youtube![]()
All recent Apple laptops get hot there. It's normal, and it's a good sign it is very hot. Hot=more dissipation. If it was cold, where would the heat be going?
i think processor would burn in smokes seconds after fan stopped working. Fans should be working.Fans being quiet should be great, i will be switching to a Mac from a tower desktop pc. I can't imagine a quiet computer since my current tower pc sounds like a rolls royce turbine jet engine, you can literally hear it from the corridor in my apartment which is approximately 6-7 meters away from the computer
i can't use it at night, it keeps people awake

Well the blindingly obvious answer is don't use it on your lap.
Apple chose to call it a notebook rather than a laptop for a reason. I know the manuals only suggest that you don't use it on your lap, but IMHO anyone who uses a notebook on their lap is asking for trouble.
doris
i seriously dont know what everybody is worrying about??
my CD MBP IDLES at 80°C... under load it goes to around 95°C. it has done this ever since i purchased it.... its 3 years old now and going FINE.
apple will release a firmware update to control the fans, and everything will be a-ok.
stop worrying!
Everyone is going to tell you something different. It's your choice at the end of the day. Don't piss and moan because others are weighing in.
