My base 15" core i5 has been on my lap for a good 2 hours.

Basic internet surfing and a handful of youtube clips.

It feels much cooler than my mid-2007 whitebook I use to have. Obviously more intensive tasks like video encoding or gaming will heat it up.
Good to hear!

I just checked my activity monitor - flash is using 65% of my cpu. I really do hate flash.
65% of an i5 CPU :D And they wonder why Apple doesn't like Flash..

I have an i7 15" and even after gaming I've never seen the CPU go above 50 degrees.
For a comparison: My original C2D MBP runs ~55°C idle and ~80°C under load according to smcFanControl.

Even if the i5/i7 models run a tiny bit hotter under heavy load than the 2009 did, they're still much cooler than the early models.

Too hot? And you haven't even used the machine, only read about it online? Ugh.

If you're that apprehensive, then truly you should wait until the first adopters get theirs, and assess. You've got to wait just a bit, don't be the monkey mind.

Prob things are fine as this isn't a major refresh at all. But if you are that skiddish for god's sake, wait a minute!

My new 2.4 MBP is actually much cooler than my old white C2D Macbook. My legs have told me so.

I have a 2.5 ghz C2D MBP from 2008 and it idles between 55°C and 57°C. I have an incase shell on it and it still gets uncomfortably warm on my lap sometimes.

I am probably going to upgrade to an i5 or i7 model this summer, so I'm glad to hear that they are a bit cooler.

Too hot, huh? Try an older PowerBook G4 like the one I owned and that will show you what hot really is. My C2D MBP runs consistently at 45 degrees up to 80 degrees on full load or when I am running Win 7 in Parallels. I just turn up the fans and it cools down.

As others have said, even if Arrandale runs a little hotter it is still light years ahead of the old PPC chips. That shouldn't be a reason for not buying.

Geez, I wonder just how much cooler the new ones are in comparison to a MacBook Pro 1,1.

That sucker was hot towards the end of it's life. I'm assuming it was because of the accumulated dust. Oh well, I get my i7 15" next week. I'll post here what I experience.

Yea I'm apprehensive. I have trouble spending $2,000 on a BTO machine (matte i5's are not in the stores) that cannot even be returned if it's too hot/loud. You investment bankers should get your own threads.

I have taken the time to see them in person It's impossible to get a good reading on this from trying it out in the stores. Always way too loud in the stores to hear the fans.

Plus the whole point of this thread IS to get some advice from the early adopters.

Everyone is going to tell you something different. It's your choice at the end of the day. Don't piss and moan because others are weighing in.

Warmer? Cooler? Is the change significant?

Would you mind installing iStat and telling us some temps and what kind of usage? Which MBP do you have?

Sure I'll install istat tomorrow o and the new one feels cooler. Of course I'm not saying ice cold but warm.

Fan noise is not a problem at all, according to the reviews.
For the heat issue: Go to the store, open up one of the preinstalled pro apps (e.g Final Cut) and do something CPU-heavy, e.g. live movie preview (puts stress on the graphics card as well) or exporting a movie, then check.

My 2,1 late 2006 MacBook is mostly 55°C, but goes up to 70-80°C on my lap and with some youtube or a lot of multitasking. Needless to say, the latter is uncomfortable, but with something underneath it's ok. So anything less hot than that is fine with me.

Hot Laptops

Try an older 1gen MacBook Air like the one I own and that will show you what hot really is.

I trump you both with a 1st generation MBP - definitely able to burn ;) Definitely the hottest laptop I have ever used.

More generally, I am always surprised that people spend so much time with a portable in their lap. I get really cramped and stiff if I use it like this for more than an hour or so, and my typing speed drops significantly.

my cpu idles at about 65ºC (whitebook SR late 2007) and goes up to about 80ºC when watching youtube :(

i seriously dont know what everybody is worrying about??

my CD MBP IDLES at 80°C... under load it goes to around 95°C. it has done this ever since i purchased it.... its 3 years old now and going FINE.

apple will release a firmware update to control the fans, and everything will be a-ok.

stop worrying!

All recent Apple laptops get hot there. It's normal, and it's a good sign it is very hot. Hot=more dissipation. If it was cold, where would the heat be going?

It also means that the heat from the CPU is poorly removed. The chips with the heatsink are under the keyboard. this means the heat have to heat up the logic board, and then it goes to the bottom. Not a very good thing. The CPU, GPU can handle the heat, but what about the other chips? My latitude barly gets warm on the lap. instead the air gets shot out from the back and warms my hands up when needed.

i think processor would burn in smokes seconds after fan stopped working. Fans should be working.:D Fans being quiet should be great, i will be switching to a Mac from a tower desktop pc. I can't imagine a quiet computer since my current tower pc sounds like a rolls royce turbine jet engine, you can literally hear it from the corridor in my apartment which is approximately 6-7 meters away from the computer :) i can't use it at night, it keeps people awake :):D

The CPU wouldn't burn. Its may w/o the heatsink, but if it has no fan, it will get super hot, and safly shut down. My fans stay off until around 120F, then they go on slow

Well the blindingly obvious answer is don't use it on your lap.

Apple chose to call it a notebook rather than a laptop for a reason. I know the manuals only suggest that you don't use it on your lap, but IMHO anyone who uses a notebook on their lap is asking for trouble.

doris

Its the samething. at iPad keynote, he said Apple invented the FIRSt modern laptop. He shows the PowerBook. then he says :we have incredible laptops now." He shows a picture of the MacBook Pro. So he called it a laptop.

because i would rather my laptop wasn't too hot to handle and uncomfortable to use for a few hours at a time?

I'm not pissing and moaning for the weighing it. I appreciate it very much. In fact it's made me comfortable enough that I had my :apple: business rep grab me a 15" matte that I will pick up today. There are enough positive comments on this that it's worth giving a try. Picking one up at the store rather than BTO gives me some comfort that I return it if I am pickier than the rest of the community. I just thought that one comment was a bit snarky, which I think is a problem in this community in general. I wish people would stay on topic rather than going after each other.

So thanks all, I'll post my impressions on noise and heat later today.
