Just drove my first Tesla S

Did you seriously reference Wikipedia for the definition of a sports car to prove you're right? Come on, I know its a subjective definition, but we're talking about super car like acceleration here. It also handles pretty damn well. So what, because it's not light or small it's not a sports car? Would sport sedan be better?

The definition of a sports car has been set for a long time. Words have meanings, and being ignorant of that meaning doesn't give us license to make one up.

Yes, I'd agree that the Tesla somewhat falls in the category of sports sedan, although the weight is still a hindrance here. It handles well because the weight is kept low in the car, but weight is something that can never be hidden completely.

How is the Model S not a sports car? The new awd version has a 0-60 nearly as fast as an Enzo Ferrari! If that's not a sports car than I don't know what is!

I have a buddy with a Ford Lightning that runs mid-10s ... it even handles decently, but it’s _not_ in any way a sports car :D

Yeah, I don’t mean to pile on, but I can’t imagine anyone in the industry, from engineers/designers to journalists to enthusiasts labeling the Tesla S a sports car. GT or maybe Sport Sedan[?]

Cool car though.

I'd love a P85D, but I wouldn't even want to test drive one until I could place my order.

Seems expensive until you consider that family cars in this segment that can keep up with it are M/AMG/RS models...
