I've finished taking photos for eBay auctions and thought it might be interesting to take near identical photos using the original 4GB iPhone2G and the new iPhone5.
The setup remains the same for both iPhones and there was no editing other than cropping and sizing each photo using iPhoto.

Here is the iPhone2G setup:

This photo was taken from approximately eight inches from the coin. No matter what, I couldn't get the iPhone to focus. Here is the result:

Even from a little over two feet back the photo is fuzzy:

Here is the iPhone5 set up:

This photo was also taken about eight inches from the coin. The coin focused without any effort. Here is the result:

From a little over two feet back the photo is pretty focused (room for improvement):

I'm not trying to really prove anything, just thought it was cool how much the camera, for closeups, has improved.
Where it used to be really useless now the photos are mostly clear.
The white balance could use tweaking, but overall the last five years has seen remarkable upgrades (obviously).

Very nice. I would like to see a comparison from 3G to 3GS to 4 to 4S to 5 like this. You usually see comparisons between the most recent release and model before but its interesting to see how improvements have been made over the years.

I'll be doing a 3GS vs. 5 camera comparison once I get my iPhone 5 next week!

I, too, like seeing the improvements.

Well done on the comparison, it's pretty amazing to see how far we've come. Everything was kind of amazing when I first got my iPhone 3G (which was my first iPhone) but being a hobby photographer I was pretty disappointed with low light and close ups using it's camera. Still loved that phone though :)

Ill have to watch for it. I have done some 4s vs 5 ones that I guess I could post. I also have a 3GS I could use to take some comparison pics. I sold my 4 last year but I still have quite a few photos that I took with it. Not sure if I can find one to use for a comparsion or not.

Thank you OP. This was interesting and FUN ;)

To surjavarman... Times like this that I wish the language editor was not working. Dumb, just plain dumb

@OP: Very nice.
@Sujavarman: We all know that the cameras have obviously improved. However, this post will be appreciated by anyone who likes to look back -Makes you to appreciate what you have now more, you know.

The macro feature on these last iPhones is just impressive.

Just out of curiosity, how's the battery doing on that original iPhone?

Holding up well, but to be fair, I sort of collect these and now own 22 of them (OCD? Yeah, a little bit).
The one shown I use quit a bit, especially at the gym where I don't really care if a weight were to drop on it. I wouldn't like that, mind you, but wouldn't freak like I would if it was my new iPhone.

The 4GB doesn't hold much music- got to run a few playlists and that's it.

I do still own my 3GS and will compare photos taken with it too- perhaps adding to this thread when I do so.
I won't attempt the 3G as really, if it's the same camera as the 2G there wouldn't be a point.

Ahhmmm... OK. I can understand someone keeping an iteration of every iPhone just for fun, 'geekness', even OCD lol... but why keeping 22 original iPhones? I mean what's the point?

Out of curiosity again of course. ;)

Because 22 is better than 21 (yet, admittedly, not as good as 23).
Seriously, I just started collecting them- searching eBay for MINT first generation iPhones and the obsession has led me to this.

Two are MIB and three are still on firmware 1.1
(I did all this before they became more expensive and hardly anyone was looking. I haven't purchased off of eBay in a few months now as there are more collectors bidding, driving the prices up a bit.)

Take a picture of the original iPhone and the iPhone 5 side by side so we can see the difference in thickness. :D

It's amazing what's transpired in only five years, and I can relate to the affection one can have with a device that changed the way we communicate forever. It's not about appreciating just a phone, it's about understanding how the device affected our lives.

Are you gonna put a bid in?

Love it! That seller is offering free shipping. . . ;)

Here are three of my favorites (these three started me out on my quest):
MINT- never activated 4GB 8GB and the 16GB.
