The combo update is designed to work on all Mac machines that run a given OS (Snow Leopard for instance), so they will update any machine to 10.6.x. They contain the drivers for all machines, which is why I was suggesting you use that to update your machine since you will be using a MBP in the end and are using a Macbook to install to the drive.

FYI, i got a fresh clean install of mac os x onto my i7. Had to use another mac to install mac os, then update with the 10.6.4 combo, took the HDD out of the enclosure and into my i7 mbp and now it's all smooth.

Thanks all, hope this rectifies similar issues others are having. With the restore DVD, I would not be having this problem, but that's being sent from apple at the moment.

Let's just say I know someone with a similar Mac, and they have that DVD, would it run on my machine?

As others have said, it must be that exact model or a generic install disc (retail copy). It can't be from another computer, you will have problems and it most likely wont' even install. Been there with an iMac and a MBP ...
