I don't fully agree with your statement about the fact that laptop screens have low response times as this implies it has been since the first MBP was released. Up until 2015 MBP retina screens had a low response time but the smearing was not really visible. Since 2016 Apple changed their course and the smearing became quite visible, especially if you put 2 models aside (early and recent retina) even for the untrained eye. Problem is that all this smearing is tiresome to the eye, there seems to be some kind of threshold for it to become bothersome and based on the comments I can only say that it's pretty obvious in the 16" version. Nothing we can do I am afraid, only a shame it's a step backwards compared to earlier models. The base with 16gb of ram is all that 99% of purchasers will ever need. I think 16gb as the base configuration will hold you for 5+ years easy.
I bought mine the first day it was available in the Apple store and have never noticed any of the problems that are reported here and have never once thought of returning it. I don't hear any popping no matter what I do, and laptop screens have low response times so all this talk of smearing is rehashing the same topic that has come and gone and come around again many iterations. It would be nice to have a 120hz refresh rate and 5ms response time, but it's not realistic at this point on laptops and still have a battery that will last a decent length of time, and if you did, it would probably weigh 7 lbs.
