It's great for Netflix as well as airplaying videos from iPhone as well as many other video apps (vevo, svt, etc).

To each their own I guess, we think the ATV is great just as it is. I have ripped and put all of my DVD movies and TV shows in iTunes, we signed up for Netflix and have found ton's of stuff on YouTube and podcast. Add too this all of the great AirPlay apps and we love our ATV.

Allowed us to cancel our cable saving over $60 a month.

Indeed each to their own but with a jailbreak you get XBMC & PLex & many more features. I haven't got the time or the energy to rip all films to an apple accepted format i just play any format as it is.

I still see it as an extra even with a jailbreak i wouldn't say it was good enough for me to get rid of Sky (satellite tv )

You don't have to jailbreak to do that. With Air Video now supporting Airplay, you can play any format video on your Apple TV. This also includes content you don't have in iTunes.

However, I prefer to only get h.264 content and place my content in iTunes though as it's a better solution than having all sorts of different formats. And especially since iOS added home sharing, keeping all my content within iTunes is a better solution. Loving all the metadata support, playlists, etc between all my computers, mobile devices, and big screen tvs.

You do need an iOS device for Air Video if that is what you are asking. Air Video is an app on your iOS device that accesses your content stored on any computer or NAS. If the video is not in a format supported by iOS it converts the video on the fly so you can watch it immediately. With the recent update to add Airplay support you can push the video to your ATV2 easily.

The quality is surprisingly good. For the on-the-fly conversions it supports up to 5mbps bitrates which is similar to Netflix HD and iTunes HD.

+1 I originally got it to just be able to stream movies/music from my Mac...I've added Netflix since and it's worth it for that alone. It became a steal when they added MLB.tv...And hopefully sometime soon they will add the App Store. All in all it was more than worth the $99.

It must lose some quality going from the computer to the ios device then onto atv, think i will stick with my ethernet wired atv playing anything on my ethernet wired computer.

I have never felt the need to jailbreak any apple products before but just felt they had capped the atv to much & not used it for it's full potential.

It doesn't lose any quality. The way Airplay works does not result in any lost quality at all. Also, it doesn't actually stream to the iOS device and then stream to the ATV. When you select Airplay from your iOS device, you're actually directing your router to send the stream directly to the ATV. That's one reason why Airplay works so well. It's really no different than if you were streaming directly from your computer to the ATV.

Sounds like you have some low resolution videos in your itunes. Did you convert them yourself? I have some I have converted from my Blu Ray discs and I used the ATV2 preset in Handbrake to get 720p HD resolution in the correct screen format. All mine either fill the screen completely or have bars at the top and bottom just like on the discs.

If they have been converted just for watching on iphones ( low res)then you will find they will not really be watchable on your TV you can use your TV's zoom options but still the quality wont be great
