I feel this way also. I really would like to get an iPad "for the family" for Christmas, but something inside keeps telling me to just wait for the updated model that will almost certainly be coming within the next few months. My brother-in-law brought his to the Thanksgiving gathering yesterday and playing around with it certainly didn't make the decision any easier. :(

I really need to make up my mind by the end of the day so I can at least get the black friday discount if I do go ahead and buy now...Beats not saving any money.

Don't get it. Mind over matter, just wait. It's like buying a new iPhone in April, not worth it. I got mine in June so it was well worth it, but at this point if I didn't have one I would just wait. It may seem like a good idea now but when the new one comes out you will most likely be annoyed even if right now you think you won't be and even if the updates aren't that major. However chances are it will have more ram and will run faster, and you may even get more storage for the same money. And the front facing camera will be coming for sure. So just wait.

On the other hand, if you get an iPad for Christmas, you get to use it for at least three months before the new ones come out. I'd just go ahead and get one now, especially for a family. Then by the time the new one comes out, everyone will be tired of fighting over the one iPad, and ready to buy the second one. :D

I think anyone in 2 minds about getting one should get it. I got mine a couple of days ago and I'm struggling to put it down! My rationale for buying one as opposed to waiting is as follows:

-I have an iPhone so FaceTime on my iPad is meaningless
- more ram would be nice but I've never struggled with what it has already
- the will not be a retina display in the next version of the iPad as the CPU is not strong enough and a separate gpu would kill the battery.
- I wanted to use the iPad now and not have to wait 5 months for the next one

I'm really glad I bought now as opposed to waiting. If you get into that cycle you will never buy anything as, especially with apple, the next revision is not far off.

Imo the only flaw of this first gen iPad is the lack of ram. It doesn't lend itself to task switching quite as well as the iPhone 4 does with its hefty 512mb. Safari is one particular app that highlights this, as you will no doubt notice soon enough.

Other than that, it's a brilliant travel companion in every way.

Congratulations on your new iPad. You asked about good Apps, here are a few I use.

If you're doing work type stuff, I use Evernote (notes and clipping-free), GoodReader (read PDFs from mail/cloud/download-$0.99), Apple's iWork suite (I use just Pages & Numbers-$9.99 each)

For video, I use NetFlix a lot (free, but you need a Netflix subscription) and the ABC App (free ABC TV stuff). If you like Anime, CrunchyRoll has a cool service and free iPad app.

A lot of iPhone games work just fine on the iPad. I don't play many games on my iPad (I use it mostly for work type things). I'm sure other folks can chime in on their favorite games.

Yeah, Retina seems unlikely. There would be no battery.

I got my 32gb 3G iPad a few days and I love it. I may get the iPad 2G but I'm probably going to wait for the 3rd revision because a front facing camera isn't a big deal for me.

I ended up deciding to just wait. The thing that pushed me over the edge was the thought/hope that the 32gb model will be the new base model. I could get by with 16gb, but having the extra space for the same price would be pretty sweet. It would give the kids more variety on what they could have loaded up on it for long road trips. If this doesn't come to pass, then oh well...at the worst I'll get a bit of a spec bump by waiting.

I just got my 32gb iPad today and I must say this device is amazing. Going back to my iPhone, I'm not sure how I'm going to adjust. Good reader is an excellent app for accessing all my files on google docs. I can't wait till i download more apps, now i wait for my other Xmas gift which is the Portenzo case :)

The only way an iPhone can go on par with your new iPad is if it's a 4 with the retina display. After getting my iPad, my 3rd gen seemed so ordinary, I just had to get the 4th gen with retina display to love an iPod touch just as much again :)

I got mine a few months ago and love it. I probably will skip the 2nd gen iPad cause I think iOS 5 will be supported on this one. So I will probably have this till the 3rd gen.

Anyway that aside. If you like the look of what the product does NOW then get it for NOW.

Congratulations on your purchase OP.

Just a question to previous iPad owners: does it feel slower with iOS4?

Not at all. Maybe while booting but other than that, everything seems as fast/if not faster than before. I'm very impressed with 4.2.1.

Apple will add camera and more ram on next version. It doesn't justify me to get it for another version so soon. As long as apple will allow software updates on my ipad, I am keeping mine.

I am thinking that this iPad will be supported all the way up to end of iOS 5.0 software update. I am not expecting iOS 6.0 until 2012 Summer at latest. In other words, I won't get one until like 2013. iPad is not a device that I will update every single year.

I doubt apple will bring retina display to iPad anytime so soon, so I am going to wait and see what happens to updates.

Camera: keep dreaming
2007 iPhone got software update in 2010. Do the math.

Ah I am so hyped on getting mine now! Should have it in my hands on Tuesday :)

To the OP, I'm assuming yours came with 3.2?
Just I really am hoping mine doesnt come with 4.2 as I want to jailbreak, I highly doubt any iPads will be selling with 4.2 at the moment though considering it only came out at the start of this week.

I got my first iPad yesterday too! I got it from the Apple retail store. It's really, really cool. Everyone who has seen it comments on it. Only "complaint" is that it's awkward to type on. I can't quite get the hang of it, though I hope I will.

I'm also open to some good app suggestions.

You got the $40 off or whatever then? I think I missed out as a friend is bringing mine over from America, pretty sure he bought it a couple of days ago :( Oh well I will still have the iPad!

Is yours on 3.2 or 4.2?

Yes, it was $41 off. Mine came with 3.2.2, but I upgraded to 4.2.

app suggestions

Hi!
I am also addicted. Unless I have a lot of typing to do I reach for my iPad all the time. (By the way, the small Apple BT keyboard is a great accessory if you do have a lot of typing . . .)

Along with others that have been mentioned . . .

iBooks and/or Kindle: Reading is pretty addicting on the iPad, especially while traveling.

Weatherbug (although the ad banner bugs me)

Clock Pro (since it did not come with a clock)

PCalc is the best calculator I have used. (after using a lot of them)

Converter Plus is my favorite converter. (after using a lot of them)

Games: Scrabble, N.O.V.A.

PS Express is kind of fun. (photoshop express) Limited, of course.
