That telcos still provide USB modems these days is beyond me.

That's sad. What's even more sad for the original poster is that Tesco is a supermarket in the UK. My guess is that it piggybacks off of British Telecom, the UK's AT&T equivalent of monopolistic telcos.

My modem, and I suppose most major broadband services in the US, give out modems with both ethernet and USB.

Go on your PC and go to Dixon's website, or I bet even Argos has DSL modems with ethernet or the option of built in routers. They should be able to send you one.

My only worry for you is that Tesco's service will only work with Tesco's modem. Drop Tesco's service.

I'm begining to think I should have just bought a windows PC like I have for the last 10 years so much easier to use.

Don't say that over a modem... macs are far better than PCs. It's tesco's fault for not providing compatible drivers, and USB only modems are a joke. Any broadband modem with an ethernet connector should work fantastically with your MBP. I could delve into the details on how your choice in Mac OS X far exceeds what you'd get with XP, but I won't go there :)

Sacred, I've just moved to the UK from Canada and I'm having a similar problem with my Macbook. Thanks for posting your problem, it's been really helpful. I'm going to head to Curry's tomorrow and see about a Router+Modem+Wireless deal. Thanks again, i think you've saved me a lot of time. :)
