This was this morning, in Milwaukee, WI, on 102.9 The Hog, during the Bob and Brian morning show.

I wasn't even sure that it was an official Apple commercial at first, especially since I've never heard an Apple radio ad. It was just a guy talking about scrapbooking on his MacBook. It wasn't Justin Long. He talked candidly about how a Mac was great for school stuff and fun stuff. He mentioned the school discounts and that you get a free iPod touch if you buy a Mac right now. He specifically mentioned the Apple Store Bayshore location.

It really caught me off guard because it didn't sound like a typical Apple ad touting a specific feature with music in the background. It just sounded like a guy talking about his Mac. Has anyone else heard one of these new radio campaign ads? If you have, are they specific ads per your area?

I just heard another one. This one was for the Mayfair Mall location. The narrator discussed video chatting about fantasy football with his MacBook. The ad also mentioned the school discount and free iPod touch.

Has anyone else heard these commercials for specific Apple Stores in their area?

My sarcasm sense is tingling. I'm just wondering if this is a nationwide radio ad campaign or just a local thing.

I just heard one more. This one was for the Bayshore Apple Store again. This time the narrator was talking about Ferris Bueller's Day Off and owning a computer vs. owning a crappy car. Again, they mentioned the student discount and the free iPod. I'm thinking this is a local thing. If not, there would be hundreds of different radio ads around the country.

How about its a local thing only(likely). Or a radio manager decided to throw in some free publicity for Apple(unlikely).

There was just a follow up ad to the last one. Now he's talking about how he got left out of playing Duke Nukem and blowing up his dormmates because he had a crappy car, not a computer. He said he had to borrow his room mate's computer, who happens to be a jerk and looks like E.T. So he mentioned the school discount and the free iPod again, and that you should really go to the Bayshore Apple Store so you can blow up your dormmates.

It sounds like you are making these up or just hearing them in your head. Never heard an Apple commercial in the radio, and I've never heard an Apple commercial for a specific store.

I know it does. If I didn't hear them myself, I wouldn't believe it. They're so nonchalant. It doesn't sound at all like a typical Apple ad campaign. I'm also very surprised that these may be the only Apple commercials on the radio or for a specific store in the entire country. If there's anyone else in Milwaukee that can back me up on this, please, chime in. Milwaukee, WI, on 102.9 during the morning show. I'll keep reporting on more, when I hear them.

Apple had radio ads for the iMac, Power Macs, and Powerbooks and for their "Think Different" campaign running during the late-1990s. In the early-2000s Howard Stern was doing live ads (along with occasional plugs) for iPods/iTunes during his show.

I've heard iPod ads narrated by the morning show host on 92 KQRS in Minneapolis...so I don't think it's totally unprecedented, although the ones you described are a little more "out there" than the ones I've heard on KQ.

They're definitely getting more "out there."

    • Scrapbooking a golf outing
    • Video chatting about fantasy football
    • Owning a computer vs. a car
    • (Virtually) blowing up your dormmates
    I can't wait to hear what's next.

One more. This one was for the Mayfair store; same narrator. He said he just checked his Facebook page and found that both of his parent had requested friend status. He wasn't very cool with that. The narrator mentioned that he's glad he's not still in college because he'd have some incriminating pictures that he wouldn't want his parents to see. He mentioned that if you get a Mac you can use iPhoto to edit and crop photos before you post them. This reminded me of the iPhone commercial where they crop a picture of a girl and her friends to just the girl's face. Again, he mentioned the school discount and free iPod.

A new one was on, (by the way, I've never heard one repeated,) and the narrator was talking about the show Lost. He mentioned that people always ask him how he knows so much about Lost and he said he just watches the episode a few times and downloads the latest episodes from iTunes. He mentioned the Mac with a school discount and the free iPod, again.

And I think I've figured out who the narrator is. There's a guy from Milwaukee who comes on the Bob and Brian show to talk about Lost episodes with Brian, who's a big fan. His name is Seth Grunlode and he has a site, sethislost.com. The Bob and Brian show is regularly on at work in the morning and I'm a Lost fan so I pay close attention to these segments. After careful deduction, I've concluded that the narrator is Seth.

So this is just a local thing, unless they're paying him (or someone like him) to do these narrations in other markets. I wonder how much they're paying him...

One more. He was talking about going green. He said to save some "green," buy a Mac. Hmm... Cheaper electricity costs? He mentioned that the MacBook is the greenest laptop out there, they're great for students and you should check one out at Bayshore.

If these are real (and I admit, some of these sound pretty sketchy to me)... but IF they're real, do you think you could get a recording for us to hear?

...And another. I think this may be the last one. The free iPod deal ends on Tuesday and I wouldn't expect an ad on Monday (Labor Day).

Seth mentioned that he'll be going to barbecues this weekend with some college friends. He mentioned that he had a friend nicknamed "Juice," but it wasn't O.J. He thinks we should all have some college friends with nicknames like that. If you are in college, he said that you should get a Mac to keep in touch with old High School friends who may have gone to a different college. The built-in camera is great for that. Again, he said you should go to Bayshore or Mayfair or Apple.com to take advantage of your student discount and get a free iPod.

I assure you, these are real. Believe me or not, but I'm posting these in the interest of the community, not some anonymous online attention.

As far as a recording goes, I'm at work and I can't think of a good way to get a recording. I could stick my iPhone next to the speaker and use the voice recording feature, but unfortunately the commercial has already aired today. Also, my iPhone is so packed with apps and music, I don't think I'd have enough room to let it record unattended for more than a minute or two.

You can listen to the radio station online, however, you don't get the same commercials. I assume this is due to advertising fees. I can try to set something up at home to record the show and commercials next week. They may still air one or two more commercials on Monday or Tuesday. I'm not sure if they'll still air after the free iPod deal ends, since they've mentioned it in every ad.
