My first iPhone was the iPhone 4. Loved it! Perfect phone.
When the iPhone 5 came out, I was one of the first to get it. I even tracked the FedEx plane as it few by my house with FlightAware. Loved the feel of the phone, but there was a design flaw that made me doubt Johnny Ive's genius: the power button on top was too far away to hit with your index finger. Fail!
Bought an iPhone 6 when it came out. Power button issue was fixed, but the new rounded edges made the phone as slippery as a gecko. There was no tactile feedback when the phone rotated laterally. I hated that! My son broke his iPhone 5 so I gave him my 6 and got a 7. Opened the box and found out there was no headphone jack. Bummer!
I'm still on my iPhone 7. I've always thought it was too big, which is ironic because the iPhone SE2 (which is the same size) is considered a "compact" phone. I upgraded my wife to an SE1, which she has refused to upgrade further. I've said for years now that I wish Apple would ditch the rounded sides and stop making bigger and bigger phones. Steve Jobs has been rolling over in his grave...until now!
Both my wife and I are buying the new iPhone 12 Mini. Getting the biggest capacities they offer and all the accessories that make sense - I mean, we're giving our next paycheck to Apple. My wife was initially annoyed that the Mini would be larger than her SE1, but when she saw it came in a pretty aquatic green, she was sold. I'm betting Apple sells out of Minis before Thanksgiving and won't be able to manufacture enough to keep up with demand in 2021. Steve was right - a phone you can't use with one hand isn't a phone, it's a small tablet. I've already got an iPad Pro...I don't need another tablet.
Now, all Apple has to do is make the Mini in stainless steel with three cameras at twice the price. I'll buy two.
