Even if they did have a camera on board, it is not their business to pursue whoever took it unless it was the driver. While the situation is unfortunate, it seems that someone is just playing a game of 'finders keepers,' which is by no means illegal.

Also, I do remember reading a story recently about someone who was able to trace a stolen mac with mobileme as both computers were connected. If that is what you mean saying that the two are linked, then you might have luck using that feature if the thief has been stupid enough to keep that data on.

My post never suggested whose business it is. Calling the company to see if there is a video camera on-board would be a good course of action. If so, the video might show who grabbed the laptop bag. Evidence.....

honestly, there isn't much you can do besides call the police and check to see if you can find the serial #...

i'm really sorry to hear that happened, though :( just goes to show, the united states isn't the paradise people think it is...

Good News

Hi,

Just wanted to say that they found the laptop!!!:p OK, it wasn't stolen! I take it back. My confidence in the American people is restored!(I always knew they'd come through!)

I want to thank everyone fr their kind messages, they helped me calm down a lot! My husband also lives to see another day ;)

As for the nigerian scam post..well it wasn't, so I hope the next time the poster hears of someone in distress, he is a little more understanding.

I'm not a lawyer, but I think it is illegal to keep found property if the rightful owner can be readily identified (not sure how "readily" is defined, but it would be pretty easy to look up the person based on the serial number).

good to hear! :D

i'd run a check on it though...you know, go through your files and other thing to check and make sure everything is ok.

Welcome to the USA! Dont let movies or President Bush give you a bad idea that all americans are bad, violent and rude!!

i sumtimes feel silly packing up my mbp just to go to the bathroom during a class or any other similar situation. But best way not to get it stolen is to keep it next to you all the time. o yah, and good way not to get it stolen out of ur car, dont put apple stickers all over your windows and leave it and your ipod sitting in plain view. Welcome to america, land of opportunity, though that opportunity might be your mac for some crook.

Seems like we've managed to scare off the nigerian scam artist. Good work all!! :D

This seems like a good ol' Nigerian scam!!! A moderator should delete this thread...

Oh please.

Go and scream somewhere else.

OP:

I feel for you. I hope you can find your laptop, have it returned, or something.

On the brighter side, you've just arrived in a fantastic country, where you are going to begin a new life.

Sure it's got off to a bit of a shakey start - but what awaits you is far more important than a computer.

Cancel your cards and anything linked to that computer just to make sure. And change all your e-mail passwords etc.

If it doesn't turn up - it can be replaced, at a cost, I know - but at least it can be.

On that note, good luck with everything, and laptop issue aside, I envy you. (I'd love to leave the UK!)

reading the last post above me proves that people love to read the OP, then just reply willy nilly.

because a couple of posts above that, would tell you the laptop was returned. negating your sympathy.

I don't know why you're posting the  face, I have nothing to be embarrassed about.

I read the original statement by the OP and posted.

Chill out and don't be such a douche.

Wow, you now have more confidence in american people than americans haha

The MBP was left on the rental car bus, not stolen. After the panic post the notebook was found and returned. There was no theft just an absent minded husband. I hope the airport was not locked down while you searched for the thief. Did he remember to pick you and the baby up at the terminal?

Happy to hear this. It's easier than you might think to leave a computer bag somewhere when traveling - my significant other left her laptop in a briefcase at the airport in Tucson, Arizona. We called the airport folks for a couple of days as soon as we realized it was missing, but nothing was found. We figured it was gone for good, but about 2 weeks later she got an email from an officer with the airport security/airport police asking if she had "lost something?" without any kind of description or any other clues. Immediately we realized it could be the laptop, and replied immediately. We described the laptop and the case, and followed with a phone call. Within three days the airport security folks Fed-Exed the laptop back to us. It was a good feeling.

Sometimes these things just work their way through the system a bit slower than we'd like, especially when dealing with a 'lost and found' item with no written identification on it.

PS: maybe you could update the thread title to reflect the reality a bit more... now that things have changed. :)

So happy you got it back!

Glad you shared your story with us and that it had a happy ending. Reading stuff like this just makes us all more aware of our surroundings and reminds us to be extra careful. I had a laptop stolen from my car years ago. Someone had been watching me. Everyday when I went to work I would wheel in my laptop/briefcase. One day I had too much to carry in one trip and I got side tracked when I got in the building. I went out to my locked SUV an hour later to get my laptop to find the passenger window smashed. They had broken the window and crawled to the back of the SUV to get to the laptop. The glass was tinted dark and I had a cargo cover, but "they" knew it didn't make it in with me and was still in the car. Insurance replaced it, but it still was horrible. And it wasn't a Mac, that would have devastated me.

Moral of the story: Don't leave anything in your car or trunk of value.

That's a pretty stupid comment. I see your morals are a little flawed, this isn't a case of finding a $20 bill on the ground, this is someones "personal" computer. If it's not yours and you find it, you either leave it or turn it in, preferably turn it in, otherwise its stealing plain and simple.

Your a douche and should not ever post again. Jerk!! I did say that its a Nigerian scam because I have received plenty of emails that read the same way as the OP posted.

To the OP: Please change/edit this thread title, since your Macbook Pro was not stolen after all... it gives the wrong impression.

Otherwise, can the mods just move this to the wasteland now that it's no longer relevant or useful.

Congrats on getting it back, that's great news.

As mentioned, there is a service that can tag the laptop and you register it with them, I forget the name.

You might want to look into that and write down the serial number of both of your computers and keep it safe.
