Congratulations to you! I’ve suffered extreme bouts of anxiety over the years, and the mindful app has been great. It’s nice to have something pop up and say hey, breathe and relax for a minute. It’s easy to say to do it on your own, but my mind is on its own schedule.

If you find a tool to help you then it’s all good.

Keep at it! It’s definitely a process…

About insomnia, there are 2 things that work for me and my life circumstance, that probably doesn't apply to most people.

1. Don't worry about how long you sleep. Most recommendations I see says you should have 8 hours of sleep, but some people are able to function with a lot less. I find my optimal sleep duration is about 5-6 hours, and when I sleep longer, it's because I'm sick or have done more than my usual level of activities during the day. So don't stress if you think you aren't getting enough sleep. If you feel well rested and not lethargic on shorter sleep, that may be all you need.

2. Don't worry about keeping a regular sleep schedule. I know that doesn't work for most people who need to keep a regular schedule for work or school, but if you are retired or work from home, then just sleep when you feel sleepy. I wouldn't recommend being totally nocturnal, because getting sunlight is good for you for many reasons, but don't stress it if you can't fall asleep until 3 am, for example.

I've tried many white noise and calm sound apps, but recently I've found I can fall asleep while listening to the news. Not always possible if something big is breaking, but most nights the late news is just babbling on repeating things that happened during the day. When the news is too unsettling, I have a video of Bernie Sanders making a speech on the Senate floor. I like the cadence and rhythm of his voice. Am I weird? Yes I am. 🤓

I usually sleep ok, I use radio with 1 AirPod to go to sleep, every now and again though have a shocker and get up feeling like I havn't been to sleep at all, like last night lol
Doesn't help when we are waiting on a call saying the MIL has died.

As per the title.

Just came out of hospital, due to something I did because of my mental health.

Need to turn my life around, and thought the AW would help me to do so.

Apart from Apple Fitness, what other steps (no pun intended) do you think I could benefit from, re the Apple Watch?

Wishing you all well, and thanks in advance for any responses.
Hope you are feeling better! You are very brave to be reaching out about your mental health. I think that is amazing!! We should all do a bit better for our mental health everyday.
Some things that I have started using more is the medication reminders, the “talks” on iTunes while I am on my walk, and I put pictures of people I love and my pups on my watch to remind me what the best part of life is; love.
I hope that helps! 😊

the “talks” on iTunes while I am on my walk,
That reminds me, I use Nike Run Club's guided runs while I walk. They are meant for runners, and I only walk, but a lot of the talk is general self-affirmation tips that work for anyone. I especially like the ones like "Don't want to run today" guide, for days when I'm not feeling motivated to walk. Seeing there is a guide for the way I'm feeling gives me a push to go walk. Best of all, it's free, no subscription needed. You see occasional promotions for Nike stuff, but they aren't pushy about it.

Thank you for your kind words.

Wishing you well on your own journey :).

Hello Night.

Thank you for the advice, it was well received.

Your points are valid, and I agree with all you say.

Science seems to change its mind all the time, thus this 8 hour “rule” is kind of obsolete in today’s world. I think humans have evolved and adapted, and as you say, we can survive on less sleep. Try telling an entrepreneur that he/she needs 8 hours of sleep & they’ll laugh at you :).

Wishing you well, friend.

Thank you very much, Mish.

I intend to start walking when I get my Apple Watch.

You just reminded me, the walking “workout” in the Apple Watch’s fitness app can read you stories while you walk, can’t it?

Be well, my friend.

As per my previous post, I am intrigued by having stories read to me whilst walking.

Just Googled this, and apparently the Time To Walk feature is for Apple Fitness+ subscribers?

Than you, my friend.

The Mindfulness breathing stuff is actually proven to help relieve stress.

So I’d definitely try to do one or two sessions with the Mindfulness app every day even if it maybe seems a bit redundant and repetitive.

Firstly, I hope and pray you are in a better place at the moment and getting the support and friendship you need.

I suffer from anxiety, stress and PTSD which combined with a bit of OCD can be problematic.
Exercise is key for me and I use my AW when running, walking and walking the dog.
Beyond all the exercise metrics I enjoy having my music and audio books to hand when out and about.
I also use the mediation app to relax and calm down.
Since upgrading to the Ultra I’ve also been using the sleep function which has been interesting.

So yes I find the AW useful, and it has become part of my toolkit to keep on top of my mental health.

Thanks for your honesty in asking the question with regards to such a serious topic, putting tech in context of physical and mental health is important.

Thank you unreservedly for your post.

I wish you well in your own struggles, and having a comorbid diagnoses (more than one) makes it more difficult, and the conditions tend to feed off of each other.

I have EUPD/BPD & OCD which, when combined, is ruthless. Add tinnitus to the mix, which is directly wired in to your nervous system, and it’s not nice.

I am feeling very confident with regards to my Apple Watch order (haven’t received it, yet.) I have returned quite a few of them in the past, but this time I think I am going to keep it & really give it a chance.

I’m going to start off with walking, and I’ve already mapped out my route. The walk (each way) is about an hour, so I plan to walk to the destination, have something to eat, then walk back.

I’ve ordered the silver SS in 41mm with the Starlight solo loop, so I’ll sign up for cellular (only £5pm) and leave my iPhone indoors. I’ll listen to podcasts & Amazon Music whilst on my walk, or maybe even just listen to my surroundings. I’ll still be contactable, which is important.

Thanks again for sharing your own situation with us, and I wish you the best.

Tommy

Hey bud.

I’ve installed the Nike run club app on my iPhone.

How do you start a walk, and get the encouraging voice over?

Thanks.

open app on phone
at the bottom of screen, tap "run"
wait for the screen to load, then look at upper part of screen, you see "Start a run" and "guided run"
tap guided run
look through the various guided runs, pick one that you like
tap download. Once the audio downloads, the download button changes to start

I would rather find a route through nature so you can enjoy the sound of birds, water, etc.
The things a device cannot replace, you know ;)

Either way, hat's off for your motivation. Good luck!
