I've confirmed with AT&T that returns are allowable up to 30 days.

Hopefully you'll make the time bracket of when the new one comes out to exchange it. We should know the release date when they announce it June 8-10, maybe get that persons name down and record it just incase they deny it later when you try to exchange it. AT&T can be tricky with it's customers just so they don't have to help you.

I just got off the phone with AT&T and was told that the very last day for me to call in for a return of my 3G would be is June 10th. That's cutting it very close.

Per the CS rep, I would simply be voiding the service agreement. After canceling within the 30 days, I would later still be eligible to receive new customer subsidy pricing for a new iPhone, if one was to be released and sold.

What sucks is that no one knows what the time frame will be between an official Apple announcement and an actual for-sale date.

I think my best course of action right now is to return the 3G iPhone as soon it arrives tomorrow, eat the $10 restocking fee, and stick with my current crummy Motorola for the time being until the WWDC. I don't want to have to activate and port my number over to the 3G and then be left without a phone after I cancel.

Thoughts?

not trying to dash your hopes, but if it's anything like the original iphone or the 3G, I don't think a lot of people here expect it to come out the day it's announced, at least I don't. Unless they actually have their act together this year, most likely it'll come out late June or even early July, but who knows

wasnt a mistake at all. You got a great price and the new iphone will be more expensive for a while. enjoy it

Whenever the new iPhone is released I hope the exterior is more durable; I have a 16gb white iPhone, and it has taken its share of abuse since I purchased it last september.

I'm the same

I've just bought an iPhone.

My HTC with qwerty keyboard died, and I was desperate for a new smartphone, so I bought the original iPhone (yes, the old one) from a guy here at MR about a month ago for £170. Transaction went very smoothly. I'm very happy with it.

Why?

NO CONTRACT.

I pay about £10-$15/month pay as you go for full internet, 400 texts etc, which is about half of what it would cost me on an 02 contract. If money is tight, I can stop using it any time and pay nothing more, or sell it at a small loss. 8GB is more than enough for me, and it will run the new 3.0 OS.

The new iphone out this summer looks like it will be on another very high contract charge. I'm very unlikely to buy it unless O2 offer a VERY good text rate which at the moment is just a rip off.

Nope it wasn't unlocked. But it's quite cheap to do so.

I didn't bother to get it unlocked as 02 has pretty good payg tariffs.

I'm a bit wary of getting it messed up actually as I'm pretty happy with it the way it is. Don't want to jailbreak it or anything.

Guess I should get it unlocked in the next year or so before people forget how to unlock the original iPhone.

The only way the original iPhone can be unlocked is by jailbreaking it. The person who unlocked it for you probably didn't install Cydia or Installer, but I'm quite certain it's jailbroken, it has to be.

Really, there's nothing to be scared of. There's almost no way you can mess up your iPhone, and if you somehow manage to do so, press "Restore" in iTunes and your iPhone is back to factory defaults.

Lol. I never expected this to be such a self-created dilemma. I'll use the 8gb 3G phone until the WWDC. Cancel service. Get the refurb 16gb and go from there.
