Thats actually the situation I'm in. Purchased iPhone 4 with less than 30 days till announcement / launch of the new one.

From my understanding and the forum consensus. You can return the iP4 to ATT (I know you said you wanted to purchase from Apple, but to me purchasing from carrier allows me to make sure my contract and plans remain the same) within 30 days, receive a refund and not have to pay the ETF if you wanted to upgrade again.

Now, on ATT's website they did mention that if the product you purchased, when returned, is sold at a discount rate, they will only refund the discounted price. Not sure about this.

And as someone else mentioned, ATT might give you a 30 day waiting period from the date of return to the date you are allowed to sign and upgrade.

I think I'll be OK. I've got 2 numbers associated with my account, both of them were out of the 2 year contract when I got the iP4, meaning I have 1 more number to use if I wanted to upgrade to the iP5.

Now that could be an issue seeing as how logic and past action indicates the iPhone 4 prices dropping when iP5 comes out. Both because it happened with past models and because who would buy an iPhone 4 for $200 when an iPhone 5 is $200?

I sold my iP4, and am using my old 3G until the next phone comes out.

The 3G is slow as molasses. If I went to the Apple Store and got a new iP4 with my upgrade price, could I get the iP 4S/5 at the upgrade price if I return the iP4 within the 30 days?

Does returning the iP4 with the upgrade carry over to another phone if I return the first one?

Thanks in advance.

Just wait..

If you purchased the phone from an AT&T corporate store (NOT an authorized dealer) then when you return the phone the rep should also reverse the upgrade, which is immediate. So you could technically return the phone and preorder at the same time. I will say I've never heard them waiving the restocking fee just because you're getting another iPhone...

Thats actually a relieve. I really don't mind the restocking fee and the difference b/t the then discounted price of the iP4 vs when I purchased it as so much the 2 year contract that I'm currently bind to.

Any AT&T store (corporate or authorized dealer) is capable to either reverse an upgrade, or swap out a phone for a new one without further changing the upgrade date...

so its the iPhone 4S. Was hoping for a 5 but can't always get what you want.

Has anyone returned their iP4 to ATT after the price reduction on the 4? Do they refund you the purchase price or the now discounted $99?

got my wife a ip4 less than 30 days ago planning on this situation ahead of time.

i went into att today and preordered the new 4s with the phone line that the 30 day guarantee is associated with. I get to keep the ip4 until my order comes in even if it goes past the 30 day mark.
It was an even exchange price wise (16 gb for 16gb) but i did have to pay a restocking fee($35 (********)). Also, my contract date starts the day i got the original phone so i got to burn up a month of contract time :D

So they refunded you the full price (less restocking fee)? Good to know thanks!

As a side note, Apple's website shows that the phone will be delivered on the 14th? Is this correct?

yes... full refund -$35

not sure on the arrival date, the guy i spoke with told me that he was required to tell me 14-21 days for delivery. He rolled his eyes and told me not to worry about that. I think they just say that to cover their ass just in case.

did you order from ATT or Apple? I know ATT says the delivery will be within 14-21 days after the 14th, but Apple's website says the delivery date is ON the 14th.
