Thats actually the situation I'm in. Purchased iPhone 4 with less than 30 days till announcement / launch of the new one.
From my understanding and the forum consensus. You can return the iP4 to ATT (I know you said you wanted to purchase from Apple, but to me purchasing from carrier allows me to make sure my contract and plans remain the same) within 30 days, receive a refund and not have to pay the ETF if you wanted to upgrade again.
Now, on ATT's website they did mention that if the product you purchased, when returned, is sold at a discount rate, they will only refund the discounted price. Not sure about this.
And as someone else mentioned, ATT might give you a 30 day waiting period from the date of return to the date you are allowed to sign and upgrade.
I think I'll be OK. I've got 2 numbers associated with my account, both of them were out of the 2 year contract when I got the iP4, meaning I have 1 more number to use if I wanted to upgrade to the iP5.
