I guess that most people visit forums when they have a problem or something to complain about. This paints a very subjective picture of what percentage of users may have received faulty units.

No one is going to register here to let us know his screen is OK. So I guess when 10 people register to complain, there are at least 10.000 other people who have no problem at all.

So statements like "you're lucky if your screen is OK" are total rubbish in my holy opinion.

I respect your opinion but usually, monitor reported problems follow "iceberg theory"....I mean customers announce in the forums only a small part of "the" problem...many computer customers don't read/write in forums or don't care about monitor problems because they replace iMac under warranty 2-3 times until they get a good one (nice prospect?) or prioritize i.e. IR monitor problem as "minor" or "LCD inherent problem".

Luck is a serious factor when poor QC exists...

Nope - mine is an LG panel:

http://www.panelook.com/LM240WU2-SLA1_LG Display_24.0_LCM_overview_4977.html

I'm quite picky about displays. My color acuity is very sharp, and as I spend most of my time on the computer doing image editing, I need color accuracy, and a fairly high level of image uniformity. I can compensate for some minor hotspots, but not too much.

Also, 21.5'' iMac has LG monitor 1080p but there aren't many reported problems.

Most of the monitor problems are reported for the 27'' iMac LG monitor 1440p.

Why?

This is the reason why I don't risk to buy 27'' iMac and I may buy a "full BTO" 21.5'' iMac.

If I need a larger monitor, I will wait for the new Mac Mini with better graphics connected to a more reliable IPS monitor (EIZO, NEC, IIYAMA, ASUS, maybe DELL etc).

This is the reason why I don't risk to buy 27'' iMac

c'mon man - now I think you're definitely overreacting

there's no real risk here - that's like saying every 3rd unit leaving Apple is faulty. there might be issues in QC - no doubt about it - but saying there's a risk ordering a 27" is way beyond rational reasoning

Agreed. I love my 27" iMac. No screen issues.

Ok, this thread has gotten away from the reason I posted it. I guess we'll wait until Mavericks is announced and see what the deal is. Hopefully those of us who are purchasing new 2013 iMacs will see a free upgrade :)

Nobody knows who will get Mavericks for free. When apple releases it, they typically say anybody who purchased a new mac in the last 30 days will get a free copy of the new OS.

If you fall in that period, you will get a free copy. If not, upgrades for Lion, ML, etc. have been $29. I'm sure that $29 is not too much to ask when you just spent $1,700+ on the iMac.

I hope you are a lucky boy, else....check below threads (IR, ghosting, poor quality control, streaks etc) :

check around this site and you will find many other problems with the 27'' LG IPS monitor in 27'' 2012 iMacs... I didn't hear anything about new monitor in 2013 iMacs.

PS: Personally, I would prefer a "full BTO" 21.5'' iMac (less reported problems).

Firstly what monitors did apple use for the late 2009 27" iMac . Secondly I never did like the LG brand I owned two products made by LG the chocolate phone from yesteryear and a lg 47" TV both developed problems especially the TV which developed a white smear around the entire border. LG refused to fix blaming me for using chemicals on it which I never did.

Since than I hate LG with a passion, I wish Apple uses Samsung monitors, and I really hope I do not experience any of the aforementioned problems with my late 2013 27" iMac.

Maybe yes, maybe no....but first, read below these threads (about IR, ghosting, poor quality control, streaks etc) :

These customers are not simply a small portion of the total customers. They belong to those customers who reported monitor problems with their 27'' iMac in this forum. Which is your conclusion?

Up to a point, adding RAM will normally cause your computer to seem faster on certain types of operations. RAM is important because it eliminates the need to "swap" programs in and out.

Ok but currently 8 is enough, so u meant 16 as future proofing?

First of all, yes they are a small portion of total customers. If you think that the majority of mac owners come onto this site to post about their issues, you are completely wrong. This site has 849,306 members, not even close to the number of mac users their are in the world, but good try.

Second of all, you act like apple won't fix or give you a replacement machine if you are experiencing one of the above issues.

Don't go looking for problems that you cannot see. You risk falling into the mass hysteria trap.

Solid and sensible advice. I am always surprised that people don't get that important, yet logical, fact.

Just ordered a 27" and hoping to get Mavericks for free, although it isn't a problem if I don't.

Read all the threads about poor QC on 27" screens, and while there do appear to be some real issues, there also seems to be a certain amount of unrealistic expectations*, particularly with regard to running a monitor at close to 100% brightness, where artefacts will almost always be visible.

I seem to spend half my life recalibrating television screens and it amazes me how many people put up with poor images due to incorrect setup.

The biggest problem I have with my current setup (2006 24" iMac) is that the screen cannot go dim enough, even on minimum.

(* clearly I've cursed myself now and will get a duff screen...)
