is there a difference between the packaging of the 2nd and 3rd generation? im afraid someone will try and sell me a 2nd gen instead of a 3rd. thanx

same i was thinking like that also, then i decided to buy it online instead for safety measure.

Lovin' the new iPod Touch!

1. Is there a good difference with loading/scrolling in Safari? Even though loading speeds really depend on internet connection have you seen a noticeable improvement?

Loading and scrolling are much faster than my old 1st gen iPod Touch! Much faster!

2. How is Mail with opening emails? Is it more efficient?

I don't know what was wrong with it before....???? So I really can't offer an opinion.

3. As far as gaming is concerned, how much of a difference is there is graphics quality/framerate?

Graphics are a lot better!

4. How is syncing with iTunes? Is it faster?

OMG! Soooooooo much faster! It took my 1st gen about 2 hours to load all my content onto it, the 3rd gen iPod Touch only took about 25 min!!!!!

5. Battery Life, anything very bad as far as battery life is concerned?

Still unknown.....just bought it today!

Thanks :D

***I have the 64GB one and decided to upgrade because I do not care about the camera....I have a phone with a camera on it that I ALWAYS have on me....so no need for 2 contraptions with cameras and plus, how good of quality do you think the first gen camera will be on the iPod????? Just my thought!***:)

I didn't say there was anything wrong with Mail before, i"m just wondering if emails are loading up faster and when it checks for Mail if it does it faster.

1. There is a noticable difference in scrolling/loading in safari. especially with graphic intense web pages.

2. Opening mail is quicker, as is opening any application on the new Ipods. Displaying emails seems quicker too.

3. Graphics do seem slightly smoother on 3d games with better frame rates, but 2d games such as Rolando seem to run the same to me.

4. Syncing with iTunes seems the same to me

5. Battery life doesn't seem quite as good, but should improve after a few more days of use.

Hope this helps

P.S. These comparisons are against my previously owned iPod touch 2nd gen 8gb

congrats on your new 3rd gen ipod touch! If I may ask, when you bought the new ipod and transferred your music and videos and whatnot to it, what about the apps that you bought from the app store? Does it automatically sync with the new ipod touch? Please enlighten me! Thanks!

Thanks!

I managed to restore everything I had on my 2nd gen iPod, including all paid for apps and game saves.

The packaging is exactly the same! The only way you can tell the difference is by opening it up and checking that you have the upgraded headphones with volume control and mic. Also it will have inbuilt voicecontrol which i believe the 2nd gen does not have even with the new 3.1.1 software update.

Also you should notice the speed difference!

Alright, I've got all the info I need. I'll be waiting until October 14 when Apple may be holding a keynote and adding a camera to the touch, so I'll be buying that day regardless of what they add, or if they add anything. My 2G's back is so scratched and I have a small scratch on my screen and I use my Touch for about 2 hours a day. I need this speed upgrade. But I would love a camera.

You need this upgrade? I have a 1G iPod touch, my screen is thoroughly shattered and cracked, and my headphone port has stopped working unless I hold the headphones in at a funny angle that I can never seem to get right. :D (That's right, I can't even listen to music on my iPod anymore!)

I'm tempted to get a refurb 16GB 2G for $199 (that's all the capacity I need). In fact, if I can find one cheaper, I could even go with a 1G since my case would fit it better and I don't think there's anything compelling in the 2G that would make me want it, not even the external volume controls. Same with 3G, although if they added a camera, I'd consider it.

Also in my consideration: a third-party accident-protection warranty.

Realize the faster processor of the 2G (and 3G even more so) IS significant, even in everyday non-gaming usage. Everything, including using Safari and browsing menus to navigate to your music, is faster.

Faster, as well as more responsive. No lag. Some people just think "faster" means their apps launch faster… that's not the only thing that's faster. Like you said… navigating through menus and doing anything is going to be quicker to respond. Even little things like rotating the screen to landscape… it's going to flip faster… almost instantly after you've rotated the screen.

It's like an iPod on steroids!

i think there actually is a difference. the 3g package has the microphone voice recording app thing on the sticker and the 2g doesnt have that because that came out with 3.0 which was released after the 2g. can anyone confirm this?

Makes sense. The new iPod touch comes with the headphones with the mic and volume controls on them…. the old iPod touch didn't have this.

Yes if you read the back of the new iPod Touch it should read something about iTunes 9 and getting it as a free download. I'm positive the older gens wouldn't say iTunes 9 on them as well seeing as it was announced the same day as the new iPods.

3 is a charm!

I had an older 32GB 5th gen iPod,and decided to splurge for the 32G iPod Touch as well. $300 at the San Francisco Stockton Street store. :D

Not disappointed at all. My videos are much better on the larger landscape screen, and I use my wifi to have it as a radio receiver and much more. It's a new toy and there is so much to discover.

I was not much let down about the camera. My cell already has a 2MP and I would being along my 6MP Nikon D50 for serious picture taking.

They never made a 32GB 5th generation iPod…. but I know what you meant.

good for you. I tried to justify something why I really want new one. but after couple of thought, it didn't make me. actually, voice control and faster processor are only different. that don't make me to buy. but if they will add camera just like original plan, I will probably be considered. but right now, there is no way to buy it.

I really wanted to jump in and get a new ipod touch, but I decided to get an ipod nano instead (I needed to replace my old 20 gb ipod photo- I had a 30 gb ipod video but it died after one year- it was free with my imac)... I will get the ipod touch the second Apple answers the zune HD- (I will not get the zune hd, but I do like a lot of the features- since the zune hd will not work with a mac I have no interest, but I do hope that this will but some pressure on Apple to update the hardware on the touch.)

Is Apple scared of the 1.1% share Microsoft has:rolleyes: I do hope the Zune HD does ok because I think competition is good for us... the Zune HD should make the next ipod touch better...

Wrong. The iPod touch makes the Zune better since Microsoft copies Apple every step of the way. I don't really care about a camera. Almost every cellphone has a camera of some sort and it is rarely used (including the 3GS camera). I care more about the "guts" of the device than some icing on the cake (camera, OLED, etc). Zune HD is an example of having icing and no cake. It has WiFi, but the browser is Internet Explorer's retarded baby. It has an OLED display but a poorly designed GUI. It has a nice/fast CPU/GPU but no apps to utilize it.
