Whose idea was it to make the edges shiny like a mirror? First of all it attracts fingerprints like crazy, and it makes it seem like a cheap lighter. My 4S had flat edges but they were matte, not shiny like this. Worst looking iPhone I've owned. Need to get a case ASAP so the edges are hidden forever.
This is an Apple strategy they have employed since the original iPod, make the device look shiny and luxurious without any consideration for real world usage (finger print and scratchable as hell). Unfortunately for Apple, marketing outweighs function.

So, a Rolex should have dull finish too?

So, everything around your house is dull too?

Of course, i am sure that everything around you is scratchproof too?

Interesting that you point out a watch example, because I've seen many people buy cases for the Apple watch and this is where I draw the line how ridiculous it has gotten. It has really gotten out of control how fragile Apple designs everything. Everything requires a case. I even remember having to buy a case for the Apple TV remotes because the aluminum would dent if dropped, or in the case of Apple TV 4, the touchglass would shatter. I know many of us Apple fans are used to it, but it's really gotten out of control.

I don’t have a case on my AW series 4 Space Black. Still looks great till this day.

In the closet, I have a shiny Rolex too that have scratches on it...so what?! I do not call Rolex to change their design to some cheap-a$$ metal or metal-like materials. I do not moan on the Internet about Rolex leaving fingerprints!

What is equally ridiculous is the amount of anal-ness of some members about fingerprints on their devices and demanding Apple to fix this egregious design “flaw.”

Fragile? How is fingerprints and scratches equal fragility? Huh?!

I don’t think you can compare a Rolex watch to general Apple products as they are totally different. Rolex is a lower tier luxury watch brand that make watches designed to be worn and abused and Apple products are aesthetic but fragile. My Rolex Submariner is brushed steel and scratches and dents can be buffed out at an authorised dealer without fear of damaged coatings and discolouration. The face crystal can be replaced too. Most people quite like dents and scratches on a Rolex though as it adds to the character of the product. I couldn’t say a scratched up iPhone really gives that impression although I’m not bothered about it so much on an Apple Watch.

At the end of the day we all have different perceptions in regards to fingerprints, damage etc and your opinion is no more right than anybody else’s.

Apple Watch are not meant to be worn and abused?

Apple Watch SS silver can be buffed the same way a Rolex can...which i have done on my Series 0. My Space Black has DLC coating and so far has held up remarkably well after 2 years (and counting).

How are scratches and fingerprints considered “fragile”?? No.

As for iPhones, yeah, the sides of 12 P/PM show fingerprints...and? It wipes off easily. How does that make it fragile? How is that “damage” as you stated?

There are opinions and then there are ridiculous opinions. The latter is calling for Apple to redesign the whole phone just because the shiny side shows fingerprints.

I’ve never had any desire to own a SS Apple Watch personally so can’t comment on the durability or repair ease. I only comment on the shiny sides of the Pro because quite a few reports have criticised the durability of the stainless in terms of noticing scratches from the box to general use. The fingerprints much like the surface on the back of my iPhone 12 back glass are one of the reasons I use a case.

Not here to argue with you as you’re obviously sensitive to criticism of Apple products as you defend quite fiercely, just sharing my own perceptions. All the best.

Well, for one thing, i don’t use “fragile” and “damage” so freely....

Defend Apple? Not really. Just being realistic. YMMV.

I do agree about the edges. Just wayyyyyy too shiny.

The army of fingerprints that'll soon assemble there doesn't make things any better.

The OP. You can tell from photos and videos that the edge of the iphone 12 pro has a shiny finish so i don't know why he's surprised.
The OP didn’t say anything of the sort. In post #8 they said this:
Seeing the phone in your hand is a bit different than seeing it online. Obviously I knew how it looked. But I was still surprised. Also, this is the first time I purchased an iPhone without ever seeing one in the store. Apple Store in my city is closed due to lockdown. No other shop has any in retail stock, all stock is online. So obviously that had an effect.
They admitted prior to buying they knew how it looked.

They said they didn't see it in person in an Apple store. They saw it online in images and in the images you can see it has a glossy finish.

Funny how different people’s tastes are. My daughter just got the 12 pro in last week in graphite, and I think it is stunning. I haven’t been a huge fan of the stainless edges on the phones as a rule, but I think her phone is gorgeous.

Like everybody else who pre-orders or doesn’t have any retail outlets open due to COVID then. Nothing the OP has said is unusual in the slightest.
I think that nearly all YouTube videos whether HD or SD have gone over the finish of the new PROs extensively... almost exhaustively.

i bought mine online...as did most here I assume. No surprise here.

I’m sure the OP saw the same videos we all did. Hands on experience with anything still highlights things you were aware of but surprised at seeing it in person. It’s a natural phenomenon we all experience.
