I had a rev B MBA with 1.86 GHz CPU and SSD. It was stolen, and I am trying to figure out how to replace it. I am considering a unibody MBP, but not because I don't think the MBA is fast but rather because I am expecting an update to it and feel like it's not as good of a buy now.

The thing I wonder about, is my MBA with SSD was really fast. I mean, it seemed to do everything faster than my MBP without SSD. I know intensive applications would be faster on the MBP, but really how could normal things be faster with a MBP if it didn't have an SSD?

Does your MBP have an SSD? It seems to me a MBP would be amazing with an SSD. I am thinking of the 2.4 GHz refurbished unibody MBP for $1699, then upgrade the drive to SSD. Although, I sure wish the 2.66 was more affordable, as in the long run 8 GB of memory will add a few years of life to that MBP you bought.

Anyways, congratulations on your MBP. That is absolutely beautiful. And two years from now, it will probably only cost $200 to upgrade the RAM to 8 GB.

Best wishes with it.

That sucks, my SSD Air was like my baby having it stolen would have been terrible. Hope you were using filevault! :)

Get the 2.4 with the Intel SSD, faster processor, faster SSD, quieter, cooler... It beats the SSD Air up in everything but size and weight.

When I was shopping the other day I had a hard time finding good deals on the 2.66 also. I couldnt get one under $2000-2100 used, whereas I got the 2.4 for $1650 out the door brand new. That pays for a x25m right there.

As the title says, I managed to sell my MBA today (was hard finding a buyer because of the economy) and am returning to the MBP club because well weight and thinness could never make up for the lack of power.

Gonna be putting in an order today for a 2.93 GHz unibody with 320GB 7200 rpm hard drive.

my question is regarding heat issues with the upgraded processor and faster hard drive, is there anything i should worried about?

appreciate your thoughts and let me say, it's good to be back! It'll be my first unibody :)

welcome to the Club :)

i'm so stupid, even more stupid than the apple fanboy.

here's the quick story.

sold my perfectly just fine classic mbp (2.4ghz penryn) because my jaw dropped after seeing steve jobs pulls out MBA out of the envelope.

sold MBP, bought rev A MBA only to experienced core shutdown and the slowness of PATA hard drive.

sold MBA and bought UMBP15" 2.4ghz, after just 1 month of use, i miss the sexiness of MBA, and i heard apple has fixed the core shutdown issue, and the speed of SSD is tempting. sold UMBP15" and bought MBA rev B with SSD.

still not happy with MBA because i missed the screen estate of 1440x900 res. sold the MBA and bought UMBP15" custom with 2.8ghz, a month later apple upgraded the custom processor from 2.8ghz to 2.9ghz. crap!

after saw the UMBP17" screen resolution, jaws dropped again, sold UMBP15" custom 2.8ghz and bought UMBP17" 2.6ghz only to experience with eyes strain.

luckily i think my eyes have adapted to the small text in this hi-res screen after 3 weeks of use.

i'd say more stupid than the stupidest fanboy. what do u think?..

I dont blame ya I've been in that road many many many times believe it or not.

Actually my situation was a little more severe than yours.

I started out with the 06 1.83GHz mbp had inverter problems got it fixed for free from apple and then sold it for the 17" 2.0GHz mbp. Then sold it for the 15" 2.2GHz mbp with the first led backlighting, didnt like the 128mb of Vram because it ran some games too slow and returned it paid the restocking fee and got the 2.4GHz mbp.

Used that for a while and sold it for the 2.4GHz 17" mbp, sold that and got the 2.5GHz 15" mbp, sold it and then got the MBA rev. a, didnt like it so I actually jumped up to a 2.66GHz 4 core Mac Pro with 8GB of RAM + ATI x1900 + a 20" ACD + 23" ACD then used it for 6 months and sold it, went up to a 2.8GHz 8 core Mac Pro with 16GB of RAM, 150GB 10,000 rpm raptor drive as boot, ati 3870 card + Nvidia 8800GT (while keeping only the 23" ACD and sold the 20" ACD) + a 17" hi resolution 2.6GHz mbp, 4GB of RAM, hitachi travelstar 7k200 hdd.

Sold both Mac Pro and the 17" mbp and the 23" ACD and then went with a 2.53GHz unibody mbp + a 24" LED ACD. Then I sold my 2.53GHz unibody mbp just a few months ago and went with a mac mini but kept my 24" LED ACD.

So as of today I'm running a 2.0GHz mac mini, 4GB of RAM + 320GB hitachi travelstar 7200rpm hdd + 24" LED ACD and its seems to be the right machine for me.

Surprisingly every machine I've sold, I sold it on craigslist and only lost maybe a couple of hundred to few hundred bucks after a 4-6 month period (I just see it as a rental fee).

I'm not even mentioning the 30" ACD that I bought and exchanged it 3 times due to the right side being brighter than the left side and eventually me getting a refund with no restocking fee (was a b*tch hauling that to the 3rd floor apple store).

Not to also mention I exchanged the 2.4GHz SR mbp 14 times at 2 apple stores due to the bottom of the screen being yellow.

I totally understand, I wish Apple would do a 2 week trial without restocking fees from any Mac that you buy so you would definitely know which model is right for you.

All this time after jumping from almost every machine (except the imac which never really interests me and still doesnt) I found the right combo for my general needs + the $$ back in the bank.

Since last year when I sold my 2.8GHz 8 core Mac Pro machine, I was going to wait until Nehalem was released but I am going to stick with what I have since most of the things I do is fine on this setup. I just dont want to spend the money for a luxury item that I dont really need in the end.

At some point later this year or sometime next year, I probably will buy a 17" mbp with Nehalem chipset in it though.

Then again my jaws dropped! Macmini is enough for u and yet you ever had 2 macpros!!

I'd say you've taken a long & twisty road towards finding & getting exactly what you want. If that's true, and you're now happy, you're quite the smart fanboy who just took his time a little! :D

Not smart in term of money and in this economic crisis condition. But hell, im now happy with this 17" and all i need is an intel ssd.
