I don't really see the difference when using either in the stock mail client.

However, I've noticed that when I scroll to the bottom of my emails on my Gmail account on the stock app, it gives me the option to "download more". so I can see older stuff. Hotmail doesn't do that.

First off, my experience with Hotmail spam filtering is that it sucks. My experience with gmails is that about one or two a MONTH show up in my inbox. When it happens, it's pretty surprising.

Second off, it's google's philosophy that you don't delete old emails, you archive them. If you don't like that behavior on your iPhone, go into Settings > Mails, Contacts, Calendars > <your gmail account> > and turn off the Archive Messages option. Then it deletes like how you want.

As for the number of folders showing up, you can control that via the web interface of gmail, at least if you're using the IMAP protocol. Go into Settings > Labels and select/deselect the "Show in IMAP" option.

I am showing that IMAP protocol is enabled yet am not seeing a list of folders to select/deselect "Show in IMAP". I am on the desktop site. Where is this?

It's pretty easy to do what your asking.

On your iPhone go to "Settings" -> "E-mail, contacts, callenders" -> "Gmail or what you named it" -> "Account" -> "Advanced" -> "Deleted" -> choose the deleted folder and voila, now when you delete it should go to the deleted folder on your gmail account, instead of the "archived" folder.

It works fine here, and have done that for about 2 years now.

There no needs for the gmail app in my opinion. As long as you can not set it as a default app, I will continue using the native mail app.

And well the native app can do the same things as the gmail app, it just takes a bit more setup to do.

K, thanks. And how do you get rid of the extra folders below "trash"?

Please be specific about which folders you are talking about. And I'm not sure why it would bother you.

I've used about every email client or web based service available. If for no other reason than to satisfy myself that my long time gmail is still the best for me.

At the end of the day Gmail is what I enjoy due to its complete flexibility. It can be setup in several ways to meet most everyone's needs.

About the only change I've made recently is to use the new Mailbox app. It's an even better way to handle multiple gmail accounts fast & efficiently. I prefer inbox zero, & Mailbox facilitates this easily.

I personally prefer the Gmail app over the iOS mail app.

As for deleting... the point of Gmail is, and always has been, that you don't need to delete emails. You archive them (so they're not in your inbox) and then can search through them all whenever.

You can still delete though, though I don't quite know why.

Some people sendt a lot of pdf and jpg's and other stuff over email, and it's a waste of space, if your never gonna use it again. I archive stuff I think I will need down the road, but emails and attachments I know I will never need again, I'd rather delete, than ending up wasting space..

I was in the first 1000 users online that beta tested Gmail in 2004. Sorry to pick a hole, but I agree with everything else you say. Gmail is the best web based email provider IMO. :)

That's fair. Didn't remember when gmail launched, but I was a part of it too when gmail was invitation only. I knew it was in my first year of college, which I associate as 2003, but I guess 2004 (April, having looked it up now) would fit that same school year. Good catch. :D

For the record, I think it's a pretty low blow to remove exchange support.

I downloaded the new Gmail app for iPhone yesterday and have now removed gmail from the native iPhone app. The emails come through instantly and the apps itself looks very clean and pleasant to use. I have my Hotmail still synced to the built in email app just to keep it going.

So far the Gmail app is brilliant, a big thumbs up. :)

Gmail seems way more complicated, there are now 9 folders rather than 5. Can someone explain to me how this is necessary or better? It seems very cluttered and excessive.
Necessary, better, cluttered and excessive are all subjective matters. Use whatever works for you. If one email provider truly was universally better then we'd all be using the same provider.
