well the i5ulv might be a bad example at 1.x ghz but i originally meant the i7 ulv with HT and TB, making 4 virtual cores. those would run circles around the C2D and still be cool and efficient.

But they cost as much as the 2.66GHz i7 so too expensive for 13". Steve doesn't like the Intel GPU so fitting a dedicated GPU would make it even more expensive

My questions are these:
1. What type of screen does the Macbook have? Is it glossy or Matte? Also is the gamut of the Macbook inferior to the color gamut of the Macbook Pro?
2. How are the iSight cameras on the Macbook Vs. Macbook Pro?

(...)

Hi there. To answer your questions:

1. The MacBook has a glossy screen but has no glass over the screen, making it less glossy (with everything that implies, positive and negative) than the MacBook Pro 13" (which does have a glass over the screen).

2. The iSight cameras are the same ones in both models.

If you have the possibility, I suggest you take a look at both of them in person so as to have first-hand experience previous to your purchasing decision. If not, there are pictures and videos on the web with both of them.

Hope it helps! :)

i know it is an issue. sandy is assumed to have a decent integrated GPU. perhaps they will put in an ULV ATI card to match the i7ulv and bypass the integrated alltogether. i don't know they will have to solve it somehow of course. perhaps throw in an ati hexacore os something :D

WOW! I didn't know Apple raised that € price! Why can't Apple offer fair price for Europeans?!?! I'm happy that my sis got her MacBook for 800€ a month ago because these new ones would have been just more expensive

It's because of the devaluation in the € against the $. When the exchange rate becomes favourable again (to the € holders), you'll see a price drop in the next revision.

The UK price also went up (by £50 to £100, can't remember the previous price exactly).

But 999€ is 1240$! € hasn't gone down THAT much. € prices have always been unfair and seems to be that they always will be

I would just like to point out that there is a $150 price difference between the Macbook and the Macbook Pro when considering the education discount. So, like many other posts said, for the extra $150, you will be getting:

- 4gb of RAM (~$90 upgrade)
- Option of upgrading from 4gb max RAM to 8gb max RAM
- Illuminated backlight keyboard
- SD Card Slot
- FireWire 800 port
- Aluminum unibody enclosure
- Slightly smaller dimensions and weight
- The "Macbook Pro" sign (+ prestige of owning a MBP?)

You forgot battery indicator lights and the IR sensor for apple remote.. both absent on the white macbook... small details but useful when you want them.

I feel compelled to weigh in my opinion on this, since my wife and I purchased both a 13" MBP and MB on the same day. We both got the mid-2009 models, through AAFES (no tax) and they price-matched the educational discount (we're both students).

Within 6 hours of unboxing my MBP, it had a dent. I had set it, closed, on one of our couches, and was carrying over a 2.5" external drive (aluminum case, rubber edges, weighs a few ounces) and it slipped out of my hand, striking the lid of the MBP, causing a quarter-inch dent on the lid. So, a small object falling from about a foot and a half was enough to dent the lid. I returned it, got a new one, with a Incase sleeve and a Speck hard shell. Upgraded it myself to 4 gigs of ram and a 500 gig HD. So here's my opinions on the "features" of the MBP as opposed to the MB.

Illuminated keyboard: irrelevant, I touch-type and rarely type in the dark.

SD slot and Firewire: I'm not a photographer, so I can get by with USB keys and external USB hard drives. Two features, irrelevant.

Auto-dimming Screen: more annoying than useful. It's never at a comfortable setting when it auto-adjusts, and I end up just setting it manually.

8 gigs max ram officially supported: 8 gigs is prohibitively expensive, and I fail to see what someone would need that much for on a system with a 13" screen with these specs. Regardless, the MB will support it just as well, just not officially.

Aluminum Unibody: Looks sexy as hell. Transmits heat right through the body like a champ, making you feel like you have a heat pad on your lap, often uncomfortably so. If you're like me, you'll be anal about the aluminum, so you'll just have to go out and get a shell, then worry every time someone breaths on it wrong so it isn't scratched or dinged.

MBP "Prestige": Really? I mean...really? I don't hang out at Starbucks, and most people that recognize it don't give it two thoughts. Those that don't know what it is, wonder why I've got it wrapped up and shielded like it's made of glass.

So, IMHO, many of these 'features' can be negatives, depending on your point of view. If a person wants something cheap they can not worry to much about, they should go for the MB. My wife tosses hers around like it's nothing, and the thing looks just as it did when pulled from the box.

*edit*

Before this is misconstrued as being negative, please note, it's not. I love that little thing like no other laptop I've ever owned, and I've owned probably in the region of a dozen in the past 10 years. I would never, ever go back to a Wintel laptop, but if price was a factor (which it really wasn't for us) I'd have no qualms about picking up a MB and being pleased with the purchase. The MB was an impulse buy for my wife, and she now vehemently hates having to use Windows at work.

this is just about the most important difference for me, I use my macbook in the dark every day and love the illuminated keyboard.. Yeah I touch type and never look at the keys when typing but when im sitting back and have to just hit specific keys like play, volume, brightness etc. when in the dark it is so nice to have it.

Does the aluminum macbook pro really dent that easily? In terns of durability then, which would be superior?

Don't forget VAT. That's a big chunk of the difference. But you are right that we always paid more, in fact it used to be even more %wise. These days, if you just buy the MB at the airport (tax-free), it's almost acceptable.

Both have drawbacks. But you'd need a bad accident to damage either one. They are both durable and will still work with little dents and scratches. Btw, is there any cracking issue with these unibody plastic MBs?

Too bad Apple doesn't offer these in Black. White is for Girls...

The old Black MacBook was constantly selling out in my local Apple store, so there's proof the demand is very strong.

In my opinion, the white macbook looks better, and doesn't get so hot. The white is slightly thicker and bigger, but the power cord color matches with the white plastic. The aluminum is a better value for the money, can run in 64 bit mode, but gets hot, and has annoying autodimming.

It's all about looks. $200 is not a big difference to pay for the looks and more ram.

Well if microcenter keeps their 200$ instant rebate on the new model (they've been doing it for months) a 799$ macbook would be very much more worthwhile even with the limitations listed. Even if you had to pay 100$ more for ram at some point (not immediately needed) it's a pretty good deal then.

What. This just in: plastic is not 64-bit compatible (or does Apple not put 64-bit EFI in the MacBooks?). Oh and auto-dimming can be turned off.

Weight. Plastic is a lot lighter than Aluminum.

But you need a lot more plastic because aluminium is a lot stronger. Which is why the MacBook Pro 13" is 4.5 pound and the MacBook is 4.7 pound.

Before you frighten off anybody: The MacBook runs all 64 bit software that you can throw at it.

I can't believe that Apple kept the price where it is and still has only 2GB of RAM standard. They need to drop the price by $100 and include 4GB of RAM to make it more competitive with PC offerings.

Do they? Apple has record sales quarter after quarter and makes more profits from computer sales than all the other companies together. They don't need to drop anything.

I was speaking from a customer's perspective, not a business one. I'm well aware that Apple's pricing is profit-driven.
