This week saw some exceptional work by LASTIC on porting smtube to mac os x ppc, and now Cameron Kaiser introduces a new method of youtube and vimeo playback sort of a sequel to his mactubes enabler in tenfourfox, using, are you ready for it? FLASH. Shock, shock, horror, horror.

It's experimental and unsupported. You have been warned, grasshoppers.

This is an interesting idea. I really do appreciate TenFourFox quite a bit, but poor YouTube and other video playback performance is a major drawback. Firing up WebKit means I can watch 1080 YouTube videos on the G5 which isn't at all possible without Flash.... Good lord, hard to believe Flash is still a thing in 2017.

Just to state that I did't PORT anything, I merely succeeded in compiling the dependencies and the source-code of the
already available SMtube to work on Leopard via a huge detour namely Xcode and Macports.

Cameron Kaiser is a true DEVELOPER in that he creates these things from the ground up for which I can only be very thankful and bow , tipping my 'virtual' hat.

Well, back to Tiger and the Powerbook G4 12" who has been building an older qt4-mac Macports port for the past 2 hours and a half :)

Sorry for describing what you did as a port, I guess the whole having to use Macports thing confused me. Thanks for all your hard work, keeping PowerPC alive in 2017 is no mean feat.

I read that this morning. It's much appreciated, but I'm still in the camp that goes to a different browser to do stuff like video on Youtube.

T4Fx is great and I will support it, but even with the tweaking I've done to it, it's still way to heavy to be using for any serious video watching.

I am reminded of Niobe's comment in the movie Matrix: Revolutions about the Hammer (hovercraft) when trying to maneuver the ship in some tight quarters. :)

No worries, I've been using port way too much this week :)
I'm still convinced that somebody with developer skills can more easily integrate smtube with qt4 than my cumbersome
procedure, glad to be able to contribute something as a geek with a passion for (this) older hardware.

Maybe Kaiser or the Japanese dude who created Mactubes will see this and say "A-ha, so it can be done!" and rise to the challenge. Alas, whilst I can compile the odd program, even a kernel or two, I have zero programming skills myself. I did use Codewarrior back in the day, and learned to Applescript when I was in desktop publishing, but that was the nineties and I moved on.

MacTubes in 2017 would be a God Send! I sure hope he DOES see this and is able to make it work! Man do I miss that program!

I could contact the creator of PPC Media Center... I have his google contact

From the author last year:

"This spring spent several days researching playback with MPlayer, VLC, NicePlay and the newly-cracked CorePlayer. YES - did get it to work in each case BUT - only after videos had completely downloaded (so not much advantage over normal download). Also, since the video might take however long to download - then start on its own, was a bit strange from a usage standpoint. Also, none of the advanced features of Theatré Mode could be implemented. ApplescriptAPIs for these other apps (even with GUI-scripting) are just not good enough in the older versions.
The download issue is HIGHLY problematic. First, it must be hard-coded into the script because of the hand-off that occurs between PPCMC and the AutoDownloader and also, if the newly-selected area is not ALWAYS available, the videos will go to a virtual folder within the hidden "Volumes" folder. Also, unless the Temp-Directory in Application Support is also moved (and it's auto-clearing code), then you are not really saving any wear/tear or space-demands."

Lastic's SMtube solution is far superior to Mactubes/Youview as they were - I know you have to install xcode/macports but they don't take that long considering the gain you make with SMtube.

I guess I will have to attempt to get it going on one of my machines. Was that Tiger or Leopard specific?

Leopard. Tiger is not playing! (see Lastic's posts)

Yup, Tiger isn't playing along, have been compiling qt4-mqc the entire Sunday to notice this Monday morning at 5:30 that after I went to bed it failed at 00:35.

Came home today and restarted compiling from the failed part, it has been busy for the 2 hours and still not completed.

Keep in mind I'm doing this on a Powerbook. Seriously considering a Power Mac G4 1.42 DP FW.

Yeah I know what he said and the difficulties to implement other players instead of QuickTime, but maybe he doesn't know about Smtube!

Yeah I know what he said and the difficulties to implement other players instead of QuickTime, but maybe he doesn't know about Smtube!

Just to point out the difference between Smtube and the others , smtube is a front to do Youtube search in smplayer
which itself was ment as a GUI for commandline mplayer.

The biggest difference is that it uses tonvid.com also created by the authors/developers of smtube/smplayer , which to
my understanding is a HTML5 replica of Youtube.com.

Youview/Mactubes would directly connect to Youtube.com like a web-browser and are broken because of the change in
Google/Youtube API's.

PPC Media Center gets a copied Youtube URL, converts it to a feed which it then will feed to Quicktime.
Like mentioned by the PPC Media Center author , when he tries to implement it with other players (MPlayer,VLC,CorePlayer) he first has to download to video to then play it, which is not streaming a feed.

He might be able to use tonvid.com to get a feed to other players ? But that is basically what Smtube does already.

I don't want him to modify PPC Media Center , which is already perfect, but I would like to ask him to make smtube work without installing xcode and macports

Ok, I was also reading about statistic linking Qt4 to an app which means you would no longer need to install Qt4-mac
(and Macports and Xcode) because all necessary libraries would be included with the smtube.app but apart from the theory, that's as far as my programming knowledge goes.

Always worth a try to get a developer to look at smtube.

And now I'm going to stop talking about smtube in this thread, currently installing and trying out PopOutPlayer on TFF .
I hope it might enable the Udemy videos to playback on TFF. watching videos on udemy
