depends on what you mean, they bought you it as a gift and you can return it, or they gave you it second hand.
if its the former, AND you dont mind adding a bit to the cost to get an SE or SE2 depending on what Apple release.
if you are stuck with the series 3 , its fine. i keep thinking about upgrading mine as ive got the itch to buy a new gadget, but tbh it works fine and isnt even slow and does all i need it to do. there's nothing in wOS9 that would change my life so buying a new one would get me a slightly bigger watch and some new faces.
with the unique and crazy situation of AW3 still being on sale, i am sure wOS8 will be supported with security updates for a while and given that there are never any new apps for wOS i doubt i will lose out on any.
ill still think about buying a new one and might do, but it will because i want to buy something rather than my S3 not being supported, and ill give my S3 to someone to give to their kid.
