I have YouTube Premium/Red since 2016. T-Mobile is still giving me $10/month credit (from the YouTube TV days) and 6% streaming cash back from AMEX, I don't really worry about the monthly subscription. While YouTube Music is a meh, it is convenient for in-car music playback without CarPlay. As for YouTube, I have watch history turned off.

Exactly my thoughts. I wasn’t sure to even make the comment but… I see you already did.

Every year they have to make this kind of posts, like saying “hey Google, this isn’t patched yet, and users are able to run YouTube’s audio with the iPhone locked, or play in PiP mode, without paying for the subscription”…

Hopefully my method/extension will keep working for the foreseeable future.
As if this is a “real secret” that only the cognoscenti knew about.

I’m interested in that snowy sunset wallpaper, because that is just beautiful.

I've been trying to figure how to turn this feature OFF, but on YouTubeTV. It's incredibly annoying when I'm watching YouTube TV on my ipad or phone, click the lock button, and the audio keeps playing. I didn't even realize they added this feature at first, so once when I turned on the camera to take a video, the YouTube TV audio was playing in all of my videos. Unlike the YouTube app, they just added this to YouTube TV, with no way to turn it off. Extremely annoying.

I broke down and subscribed to YouTube Premium because I spend so much time on YT and it is the only streaming service I pay for, well worth it for me. I never watched much of anything on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Paramount + or Hulu and I cancelled them all because I found myself on YT most of the time. I have never paid for Apple TV and only have it when I buy a new device. The only thing I liked on Apple TV was Foundation. I know I am in the minority but that is just is my experience.

How is Google able to disable core features of iOS like background audio and picture-in-picture? A cynic might say Apple is doing it for them as part of their default search engine deal.

Works better is using Brave browser. They have a dedicated playlist section.
Solves the ad interruption problems as well, best kept Apple secret out there. Also works on the Mac. Full screen, click MiniPlayer, slide to side for full screen of other apps. No ads.

Periodically, you have to close and reopen Brave because the ad suppressor starts fighting with YouTube and things slooow way down.

For some fun, try posting this in a YouTube comment.

I’m using Youtube Premium and each time when switching from Youtube to any other app or switching back in a Iphone it pauses for a split second and thus interupts music. Quite frustrating

Educated guess: Apple has probably provided several standard APIs which enable any app developer to subscribe their app to notifications for select activities which might affect that app, such as closing the app, mode switching to background or locking the screen. It's up to the app developer to decide what their app actually does in response to those notifications.

(Edit: alternatively, given Apple's penchant for aggressively offloading unused apps from memory as soon as possible, it is entirely likely that the default behavior under iOS is to immediately disable all functionality of any given app when it is closed or pushed to the background... in which case, Google would need to actively develop a response to those default behaviors in order to enable the "core features" of which you speak.)

Or just get a Safari extension like Vinegar, just got it yesterday because my Argentinian payment didn't work anymore, so now they're not getting anymore money from me, but developers of such extensions will muahaha
Vinegar hasn't worked well for me in ages.

Over the past three years, I’ve been cutting back on my subscriptions. While I’ve regretted canceling a few and ended up re-subscribing, overall, I’ve definitely saved money. YouTube, Premium though, is a love-hate relationship—it’s my go-to for mindless entertainment, but dealing with biased algorithms can be a PITA. 🤷‍♂️
I can’t deal with the adverts. I also like stacking up videos in a playlist to play one after the other.

My YouTube Premium is my mindful to go, and I have it a lot for meditation + some yoga and such 🧘🏻‍♀️

I would be okay with a few dollars a month to remove ads. I'm no longer paying them $14 just to not have ads.
Except the $14 isn't just to not have ads.

  • YouTube Premium
    Offers:
    • Ad-free viewing of YouTube videos

    • Downloading videos to watch offline

      • Playing videos in the background while using other apps
      • Access to YouTube Music Premium, which includes ad-free music
      • Access to YouTube Originals series
      • Members-only features like afterparties, live chat, smart device integration, and smart downloads
      • Special offers and early access to new features

There is even a simpler approach. Pull up your YouTube app. Start the video. Flick the YouTube app up - it will re-format to a small play window (if you are in the US - this works without premium subscription. If you are in Canada, it doesn’t work without VPN). Then lock your phone with the side button. Then, tap the dark screen to wake up the phone and pull down from the upper right of the Lock Screen without unlocking the phone. In the “Now playing” section, tap the play button. Then, lock the phone again with the side button so that the screen goes dark.

Playing a YouTube video with the dark lock screen engaged extends battery life dramatically and is helpful if you listen to YouTube videos as podcasts.

I discovered this trick about a year ago.

For quite some time now ive been using a similar process.

1. Uninstall youtube app.
2. I use adguard but apparently there are many ios ad blockers that work. I get no ads and no pre roll bs
3. Install and Use sponsor block to cut out all the crap
4. Browse youtube in safari, open multiple tabs, pre open videos. Enjoy scrolling but having the video remain ‘on top’
5. If you want it to play in background or lock screen you just have to lock/background it
6. Open it back up and play it
7. Background it again
8. Pull down control center and hit play
9. Done

If you dont do it a second time it will often play apple music or something else. Doing it twice seems to make it do youtube.

This works for any website with video, not just you tube.

Bonus tips: double tapping etc makes it move but but you fullscreen it and landscape then you get ‘safer’ +10 amd back 10 buttons

I am happily paying for YouTube Premium. No ads is great. However, if you are premium and you buy a membership from a creator (Latte ASMR - she's the best!), then you can't stream the members-only videos with the app closed.

Double pay and they turn off your feature!

Hilarious. And yet you still pay for it.

I did that once PiP was introduced to iPhone years ago, there is a much much better way to get around the premium pay lock, but here we have old news.

Nice to know about this. Quite useful and I don't like paying for another subscription. I will definitely try this out.
