Fine, I pulled those sticks out just to make E & H happy... ;D So far, I'm not even noticing a difference. Since everything had been running fine for the days ever since I rearranged the sticks last time, I wasn't expecting improvement at least, but thought things might run slower. Then again I haven't tried anything heavy and probably won't until I get new sticks. (The bad sticks were Kingstons, by the way. The good ones are Samsung and I guess they were the originals as they were the middle ones... All were in when I bought the computer second hand from an institute years ago.)

So all the sticks I've had have been 256MB. I'm now looking at a Corsair Value Select 2x512MB 400MHz DDR kit for €34. I can see you can get a corresponding Other World Computing kit for half that price in the US. If I ordered it from Macsales, the lowest estimated price with shipping would be about $24.

Anyway, buying a 1GB kit would upgrade my RAM a little. At the moment nothing is motivating me to buy more than that. I'll listen to any opinions/recommendations though. Maybe a bigger investment in RAM might help prevent the kind of sh*t I've been dealing with recently? But then again I can buy more sticks later. Is there any difference in having the same amount of RAM divided into several sticks or just a few sticks?

I won't speak for Erik, but that cold beer waiting at the end of this process is what will make me happy :D
OK, the price of RAM should be the least of my worries if flying over to the US for beers is part of the package...........

(Btw, just before typing this, there were some spinning beach ball moments.... the "downgrade", maybe...)

Less memory is most likely the cause - better than a crash. When I decided to upgrade the Ram in my dual 1.8 G5 rather than mix memory I went to Amazon and bought the max it would hold. Here is a link to the kit I bought - I have no connection with this seller other than a happy customer. Don't know what the shipping is to Finland, but you might be able to pick them up when you bring the beer :D

G. Zuss, things were getting slower and slower for a long time, like something piling up... well, it's good to note a difference.
Well, that 4AM kit sure looks like good value for money, thanks for the tip. I'll have to see about any rates for Europe... oh yeah, unless I pick them up. For some reason the beer deal still made me laugh.....

Btw, just before typing this, there were some spinning beach ball moments.... the "downgrade", maybe...
With less ram, the Mac is writing in/out to your swap file more. When it does that the app(s) that currently have priority have to wait a bit. That gives you the beachball.

Ugh, the slowness is getting intolerable, I'm tempted to put the Kingstons back in.....
[doublepost=1456251520][/doublepost]Still, I was having some separate Safari/Webkit problems before the "downgrade" too, expecting to get them sorted out when I get the OSX reinstalled etc...

Aha, I see 4AllMemory relabels stock from these manufacturers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRAM_price_fixing ;D Not that it matters to me (I may order). Feel free to *not* comment... :)

EDIT: Oops, sorry, I was looking at 4AllDeals memory modules... not sure what the relation of these companies is, 4AllDeals also had a link on Hack's linked Amazon page... NM.

What a market... Ramjet are selling their version of the 8X1GB DDR 400 kit for almost $300! o_O Yeah, the 4AllDeals $37 Amazon deal won't ship to Finland and they're not replying to inquiries. 4All indeed.... Taking the milk train back home and just getting the 1GB for €34 ($37...), probably. By Google, you get tons of cheap second hand kit offers on Ebay etc, of course, but..(?) I wonder, by the way, how a G5-certified module actually differs from just any DDR 400 (I didn't specify G5 in searches)

Wow, that's something! Thanks Hack. I meant to comment here myself but been busy. Indeed, after my last post there's been some major backstage action again... uhh, that might sound dubious... but yes, there really are some great people on this forum. Thanks for all the help. I now have 8GB of new RAM and things are much better. I still need to do some other things like reinstall Leopard once again... So maybe I'll report again. See you around.
