I just wished apple had a better means of tracking these issues and a better track record of fixing issues that are indeed design issues or material issues even after the 1 year mark with out having to sue them

I had another kernel panic a couple of days ago. These definitely are happening more frequently than I care to deal with. Especially when I don't think I had more than two or three kernel panics in the five years I used a MacBook Air that cost half as much as this machine.

Got my MacBook back, after 8 days. Here is my (german) Post on my Website:

https://idomix.de/mein-macbook-12-retina-und-apple-nerven-mich-gerade

The picture at the end from iFixit shows the cable i talked about. This is the reason for the Kernel Panics. That's what Apple says.

After more usage and Tests (at least one week) i will write again here. The Post on my website will be updated daily.

@Dominik_iDomiX thanks.

I hope that the symptoms will not recur but if they do, it will be interesting to see symbols.
  1. Start Recovery OS
  2. in Terminal, enter the command below
  3. restart (macOS).
nvram boot-args="-v keepsyms=y"

Address-to-symbol translation will allow subsequent .panic files to include information that is more human-friendly.

@Dominik_iDomiX thanks for the update.

I'm signing up just to update this thread. I'm also having this issue on a early 2016 macbook m5 512SSD. I have installed last El Capitan updates and disabled wifi/BT wake up but problem persist.

I own this machine for almost 2 month and the problems have only appeared this week (3 times already!). Symptoms are the same: waking up the computer on the morning and found the kernel error.

Things I'm doing this week: I'm working in another office and my day-to-day workflow is different:
  • Connecting to a different wifi AP: I close the lid on the office and I only wake up the machine the next morning in house
  • Connecting to a Windows server using VMware horizon Client
  • Using a BT mouse: saving ports ;)
  • Using a second HDMI display with the Minix NEO-C Adapter.
Hope this helps!

Can you share the content of the three .panic files? Thanks.

Sure! Strange I only found 2 panic files in logs (I had one on Tuesday, Thursday and today morning). Anyway, here they are:

This is no good for all you who have this unit. I hope apple finds and fixes the issue post haste. I really want one for my everyday essential carry laptop and replace my giant 15. I had the kernel panic on gpu issue all 2012 machines have. I am watching this thread carefully. Keep the updates coming. If you have this issue engage Apple lets get this issue solved for good no new machine should panic on igpu at idle period

i have translated Dominik_iDomiX post on his blog and it does appear that the cable is the culprit. He has managed 4 days in a row with no panics. This is by far not definitive as many more reports of successful fixes will be needed.

I had another kernel panic this morning. (Starting to turn into an every-other-day occurrence.) I'll be calling Apple this week.

And another kernel panic today. Oddly enough, at nearly the same time that yesterday's kernel panic occurred.

EDIT: Make that two kernel panics today. I'm going to call AppleCare right now.

Hey all,

I've been having issues with my Early 2016 MacBook.

Sometimes, I'd notice the macbook would be warm when I take it off my bag. That's the first indicator there's something odd. Lo-and-behold; black screen. I'd be forced to hold the power button to restart and that's when I see the kernel panic screen.

Here's an excerpt from the panic log:

What could be causing the panics, and how do I stop it?

Wish I had seen this post before i purchased my 2016 1.1 Ghz model...I am now on my second laptop, which was reluctantly replaced by Apple Store after initial laptop was repaired three times for issue...after having replacement laptop one day, i experienced same issue...took it to Apple Store and diagnostic tests were ok according to them so i returned home and contacted Apple over the phone...reached a Senior Tech and explained the problem...laptop was sent to Apple for repair with logic board replacement...now I'm experiencing same issue with increasing frequency...they need to own up to this issue because this is not due to just bad luck.

This is the very reason i have been keeping tabs on this thread. The issue looks small and it does seem to be related to the flex cable. The german in this thread above replaced the cable and it seems to be holding steady.

The one nice thing it seems is you can buy one and it will fail in the return window so they are going to have a stack of busted laptops

I ended up having four kernel panics on Thusday. I called AppleCare, and the guy told me to reinstall the system software to see if that resolved the problem. I asked him if he wanted copies of the kernel panic reports, and he said "Not at this time." I found that rather odd.

Anyway, I'm in the midst reinstalling OSX.

I normally side with this line of thinking as a system admin my self. I however would call attention to the fact that the caller for the panic is the igpu which is part of the cpu. Now the usb c port also does video and it could be getting weird signal input from the port that's causing it. I am definitely no Apple eng however reinstalling reloads the drivers and this rules out corrupt drivers. I would be more hardware suspect with the high level of panics at rest or in sleep.

That's just my take from fighting with Apple on the gpu issues of my machines. They played this game as well and lost.

Good luck with your battle with Apple.

I have said it time and time again they will fix a trashed iPhone with Apple care heck even with out it they are flexible. Bring in a 1500 laptop it's like we can do no wrong stone wall

I'd expect that response.

.panic files are useful to engineering in some situations but without the keepsyms stuff, which I probably mentioned earlier, the backtraces are really not human-friendly.

In fairness, I don't feel like I'm battling with Apple just yet. The rep I spoke with did seem understanding, and said that if I continue to experience kernel panics after the reinstall, they will definitely examine my machine for hardware issues. Hopefully it won't come to that.

I'd expect that response.

That's good to know (that the response was to be expected).

Anyway, a day after the reinstallation, everything has been fine thus far.

Finally: After 10 days, same problem.

My MacBook was changed to a new one. I report on my post how it's going. If there is no update, the new MacBook works very well.

Well. After another SMC/VRAM restart no more kernel panics. In the other hand, today the computer just got hung and I had to force a restart. In system.log I have this messages:

Looks like a GPU issue again. I think this may be software related.

It's now been six days since I reinstalled OSX, and I haven't experienced any kernel panics. I'm not suggesting that reinstalling the system software will resolve the issue for everyone (I don't think it will, in fact). But for my machine, that's all it seemed to take.
