Hi Folks,
Recently installed an SSD into my 2010 iMac and wanted to see how well the system would run the Golden Master of Mavericks.

Created a bootable USB and completed installation to the SSD using the instructions at http://osxdaily.com/2013/06/12/make-boot-os-x-mavericks-usb-install-drive/

However the machine won't boot to Mavericks and Kernel Panics every time. I am able to boot back into Mountain Lion from the the existing install on my other installed Hard Disk but wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what might be causing this or how to fix.

Much appreciated!

Well, the backtrace message clearly says that it's a driver/IOKit problem. I don't have any experience with this but why don't you do an Apple Hardware Test and report back? Might help..

Actually, it's the same method creating the same bootable USB drive. Only difference is that "createinstallmedia" automates these steps.

No it's not. Createinstallmedia actually does more than that. It isn't going to give you the same result as osxdaily's method.

My method (i.e., the one at https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18081307/ ) will make a USB which will also install a recovery partition.

A USB made with osxdaily's method will not do that. Their method was only intended for DP1. You then had to use another method to create the recovery partition for DP1 separately.

Createinstallmedia was introduced in DP4 to make the process easier - and install a recovery partition at the same time. It was then carried over to the GM for the same reason.

Someone even did it both ways for the GM and said results were different (although I haven't done this myself - I don't need to - I know he's right):

It creates a slightly different installer to using the older method

Apologies.. Thanks for the clarification. I'll finish reading the linked post the next time I make an assumption... :(

Thanks for the help folks!
I only have a USB with InstallESD.dmg on it. and don't see the OSX Mavericks Installer.app in my Applications folder.

Is there a way to get to createinstallmedia from what I have?

Thanks
Adam.

No. It's not in the InstallESD.dmg file. It's in the Resources folder.

Anyway, that not important. The important file is Install OS X Mavericks.app.

If you don't have it but got it originally trough legitimate means, then it should show up in the Purchases tab in the mac app store. Download again from there and it will put the app into your Applications folder.

You can then create the bootable usb using this method:

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18081307/

and then install it from the usb. Just boot it up with option key.

Hi all,

I have installed OSX 10.9 got legit from Apple and saved on my external USB sticker using this method: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18081307/ on my MacBook pro 9,2 model....

I had exactly the same kernel panic after running Cocktail 7.0.1 and Marvick Cache Cleaner 8.0 and rebooting my MacBook Pro.....
How come?????

Now I have re-installed 10.9 again from the USB 8GB card but without running any disc cleaning utility and reboot was OK.

So either Cocktail or Cache Cleaner 8.x are doing something bad to my mac, maybe????

I am puzzled:-(

UPDATE:

After 2 restarts, I got again the nasty kernel panic error at start-up. What I have done was just to repair disk permissions using disc utility ..... Mmmm.

Now I have re-installed OSX 10.9 not from the external USB card but by using the 10.9 app got directly from Apple store and installed directly from the app main folder directory.

I will try to test for few days and see if works...

I have the problem on a MacBook Pro 13 inches 9,2 model mid 2012 with 1TB Samsung EVO SSD.

I run also Apple Hardware Test, no problems......

Here is the kernel panic error:

I am impressed!!!! If that is the reason, wow, I should pay you a big bottle of Italian wine!

Now how can I find this specific file? A broad search did not bring up anything, even with the hidden files visibile... Do you know if I have to look for example under library under a specific path?

Thanks in advance!
Andrea

Google points to this as your likely suspect- it's old software for a cellular modem. Uninstall that.

Mmmm, cannot find that damn file!

Look in System/Library/Extensions/

Mmmm, cannot find that damn file!
I have looked into the extension folder, with hidden files visible but unless I am blind it is not there:-(

This is what I see:

NMLGEDriver_106.kext
NMSamsungDriver_106.kext
NMSmartplugSCSIDevice_106.kext
NovatelWireless3G.kext
NovatelWirelessFilter.kext
NovatelWirelessUSBCDCECMControl.kext
NovatelWirelessUSBCDCECMData.kext
Those.

OK, I have removed those 7 recommended .kext files....
(NMLGEDriver_106.kext
NMSamsungDriver_106.kext
NMSmartplugSCSIDevice_106.kext
NovatelWireless3G.kext
NovatelWirelessFilter.kext
NovatelWirelessUSBCDCECMControl.kext
NovatelWirelessUSBCDCECMData.kext)

.......However using EasyFind and searching also for invisibile files, I could not find any file called: de.novamedia.driver.NMSmartplugSCSIDevice 1.0.1

In fact this file: de.novamedia.driver.NMSmartplugSCSIDevice 1.0.1 does NOT appear in the list of kext files I have show before.
So is this file still present or not?
I am confused:-(

Andrea

Again kernel crash after removing previous 7 .kext files.
Very sad! :-:)confused::(

Any clue?
