Can't return it outside 2 week period. After that 2 weeks you're into normal warranty and that means Apple don't agree the keybaords are a problem.

My machine was bought in February. Full refund and new iMac was ordered to replace it. You have to play hardball if you can't get satisfaction. Apple certainly DID agree that the keyboards are a problem.

Yeah but not publicly lol

Nope. The fellow at my local Apple Store had the view that "they" were trying to decide on a recall or extended warranty. As more and more machines fail with no word, I'd say that's not going to happen.

Happy with my new iMac and Air, so I'll just wait it out. I still can't believe Apple did what they did, but they really do a lot of dumb things that cost them customers (as does Dell and HP and MS).

On a call with apple customer service reps (Ireland?) they let slip that the keyboards are a disaster.

I honestly don't know if the keyboards are a disaster or not, but this is the first time that I've heard so many complaints about a keyboard. I mean, of all the computer components to fail, when was the last time a keyboard was a main failure point?

Still don't have problems with mine, but it seems like it's more when it will happen than if it will happen. :-(

You'll be faced with a hefty repair bill once out of warranty, unless Apple acquiesces and extends the coverage on the 16/17 keyboards. Only Apple knows the extent of the issue, equally never seen so much negative comment regarding the reliability of a keyboard. Reeks of not being adequately qualified prior to going to production, to busy picking door handles...

Kind of expect more :(

Virtually everyone I spoke with at Apple "let it slip."

But the company as a whole has yet to acknowledge the issues, so a lot of buyers will be waging their own personal battles, which is a real PIA.

Extend your warranty, if possible.

Oh yeah, I bought AC+ with the laptop. Not because of the keyboard, but because I can be a klutz, LOL.

If this issue is mainly from dust/debris getting under the key (here. here, here and here), is there any kind of seal/ keyboard cover product that would complete seal the keyboard from dust? Assuming such product would not cause this issue due to unnecessary thinness.

I'm about to jump into the Mac band wagon in the next 2 months and these issues worry me too much. It's not even an inexpensive product to begin with, and there's no return policy here.

I don't really want to go with a 2015 model as it's really dated.

It may be more than that, nor simple to remedy. Depending on your need/usage and level of support it may be prudent to sit and wait as there's clearly something off with these keyboards the amount of traffic alone on this forum should be a sufficient warning that all is not as it should be...

2015 MPB remains to be a good notebook, equally currently significantly overpriced. My advice is wait a little and see how Apple reacts as depending on model it can be up to and over $1000 USD to effect repair once the wants period is up, nor does it appear to be a quick fix.

Hello,

So I just purchased the 2017 13inch nTB model but did not opt for Apple Care. Based in the UK, what is the standard warranty which I get incase something happens to the keyboard within this time? Also, can you retrospectively add Apple Care onto a product following purchase?

Cheers!

Thanks for your advice. I've a friend who is visiting Singapore in December 2017 that can bring back a 16gb RAM 13 inch MBP (be it 2015 or 2017 model) as none of the re-sellers in my country carry that model.

I can spend extra to get the 15 inch here as I plan to keep it as my main computer for the next 5 years. However I can't justify to spend 2200+ USD (excluding all the must-buy new accessories, dongles...) on a laptop knowing it still has wifi and keyboard issues.

I'll hang tight for the moment though.

Anyone who isn't in a MUST BUY IT NOW situation should wait. Apple will make changes in the design and all will be well. But you don't want to spend this kind of cash on a flawed product.

Then buy the 2015 design, as it's tried, tested & proven. Latest coolest Mac is near useless "if" it has design issues, as with past events all Apple will do at best is extend the warranty on the parts concerned, and just replace them until it goes away with the same flawed design.

Just sit it out for now. By December you should be able to make a more informed decision one way or the other. If negative posts continue to roll in, and not by the same disgruntled individuals in significant numbers then like as not issue is factual. Be warned the dongle situation can be a non event or a massive PIA depending on your use.

Sadly Apple's arrogance and lack of concern for it's customers beyond their spending power forbids any official explanation, that much is certain...
  • Keyboard - Fair chance issue exits, and getting better or worse by the day
  • Cracking Display - More posts than previous, don't see any significant trend
  • USB C Ports - Some loose ones out there, dongles can and are problematic depending in circumstance/usage scenario
  • WiFi - Most Mac's are poor in comparison to similar specified PC's. Apple will always point the finger elsewhere, equally with enough hardware on hand it's pretty obvious to see where the fault lies, same applies to Bluetooth

I was told twice by Apple techs that the issue was likely to return after a repair or replacement. Hearing that directly was enough to get me to bail out of the machine. Here is the film biz, we're locked into Mac, so I went the iMac/Air combo route. The fellow who sold me my new machines had already returned his 2017 MBP.

The horses mouth is good enough for me. I loved the simplicity of a single machine that could do it all...now I have the bridge of the Enterprise, but at least I know it will keep working!

This kind of set up is what I am pricing up right now. Had the keyboard issues early on from the 2017 MBP. Ideally, I just want to be able to dock the MBP and use as a desktop but grab it as I head to out to work.

So now an iMac and an Air (which I really love) looks like a solution.

Although pretty annoyed I am having to find a "solution" to Apples issues!

Yeah...I totally dug the MacBook Pro 15" connected to the Dell 4K in desktop mode...up until the poor thing started to have keyboardanosis.

Buying a top level iMac and MacBook Air was a LOT more expensive, but this stuff does work. The bonus is that the i7 iMac with 580 card and 24 GB ram with SSD is stunningly fast. I was always a fan of the Air...a bullet proof design and the only laptop I'd risk from Apple for now.

The old key
[doublepost=1507169637][/doublepost]The keyboard used to be incredible, so perfect on my 2015 retina mbp. I can't see myself upgrading because of that, it was always one of my fave things on Apple notebooks

Thankkk yo for yor excellentt advice.

Edit: typed on a store demo unit. Don't even bother to correct it XD

I know this is an MBP thread so I hope my commenting is okay. I'm typing on a 2017 rMB and I don't think I've ever babied a keyboard as much a this one. My 2011 cMBP and 2014 rMBP keyboards? Carried around, eaten lunch/dinner while working, not a care in the world, no issues. I mean, I was still careful in that I wouldn't just slop stuff all over it but I wasn't as focused on the keyboard. I've been so careful with this one though because I am nervous that it may be a matter of when and not if. :/

I've just discovered the Dell XPS 13 has already been available with quad core 8th gen Intel CPU. 16gb RAM, 512gb SSD, QHD+ screen runs around 1900 USD which make it even harder for me to consider a Macbook Pro.

I really want to jump into the Mac bandwagon but it seems like it need to wait until late 2018/ early 2019.

I am having issues with the letter "N" on the keyboard (MacBook Pro 13 with tB, June 2017):
- Does not register when I touch type (ie using the same amount of force as per other keys)
- Or it registers but is delayed, eg. typing "button" and a space after will turn into "butto n", or two "nn" pop up rather than the one "n" that I typed.
- I have to tap it really hard, or tap the corners of the key before it registers.

I don't have AppleCare+ and it's been 4 months since I bought it.

Will Apple repair/replace or refund?

You’re still in the initial 1 year warranty, so if you take it to Apple, they’ll most likely repair it or just swap it for a refurbished model. If I were you, I’d look into purchasing AppleCare, especially for the newer models.
