f. buy a really cheap usb keyboard, plug it to the mac and use it so that if you spill coke on it you won't mess with your precious baby!

thanks for all the responses guys, i agree that there is no end all solution for this problem. but im a very careless, clumsy person. i dropped my mbp with in the first 3 weeks of owning it cuz i forgot to close the zipper on my back pack. luckily apple replaced it when i got the kernel panic error due to ram failure.

i just think that a keyboard/speaker cover will help A LOT, since im almost 100% sure that im gonna spill liquid on this thing someday. im gonna buy the keyboard cover and ill just have to figure out how to cover the speakers as well. maybe use tape and rubber flaps and extend the keyboard cover. i dont know. but this makes me kinda wish i got the 13 inch.

if you cared more about your mbp you wouldn't drink around it... PERIOD, unless the drink is bottled. Threads like these are pointless IMO. Its like asking people to teach you common sense.

now I need to find out if they produce macbook pro full body protectors in case I drop my MBP into the toilet...

oh no... here comes the party poopers... using computers while eating and drinking is fun. ever heard of internet cafe's and starbucks? everyone's doing it it. im trying to figure out a way to do this as safely as possible.

if you read my first post, youll notice that the question is not weather i should drink or not while using my mbp. im only asking about a cover for the keyboard and speakers.

This isn't a help desk....people aren't just here to answer your questions.

they can respond however they want but ill respond to them however i want, and you can do the same. but why take the time to post and answer a question thats not being asked?

I understand that and credit to you to for trying to take pre-emtive measures but I hardly see the point in covering up your speakers, keyboard and probably the display next when its just easier to minimise on consumption whilst using your mbp.

We don't have internet cafés or Starbucks in London so can't comment on those experiences but I'm sure it might be fun to consume whilst computing but its not so fun when tennis elbow or butter fingers strikes.

OK, to answer the thread question, how about cellophane wrap? That way you can protect the keyboard and speakers and still close the lid when you're done. ;)

for everyone who's been advising to just keep the drink far away or use a long ass straw, let me ask u a question.

whats easier, while using my mbp and drinking a beverage...
a. set the drink 5 feet away and find and use a long ass straw and look like an idiot.
b. set the drink 5 feet away and only take a sip when 3-5 feet away from the mbp, meaning its imposible to read and hold/drink my drink simultaneously. still with the possibility to forget and set the drink right next to the laptop cuz its so natural to do that.

or

c. buy a keyboard/speakers cover, so when i want to eat and drink while using my mbp, i just set it and forget it. then take it off after.

note how theres no option d. dont drink at all while using mbp.

my answer is C, but my only problem is i have a 15 inch and i need to find something that covers the speakers aswell.

e. Pay absolutely no attention to what anyone has said, inevitably spill coke on your laptop and start another thread on here titled "Oh no! Coke spilled on laptop, what can I do? Will Apple repair it?"

(Answers are: Nothing, and no of course they won't).

thanks but it doesnt really solve my, "the fluid will still go through the speakers" problem. you lucky bastards with the 13 mbps...

I've spilled a little fluid on my speaker grills, I just sucked it out of there, the holes are small enough that unless it's *loads* of liquid none will go through.

if you're going to go to the trouble of putting a dumb protector on your laptop then you may as well just step away from the thing while you drink if you're that worried about spills, though I guess if you're not as adverse to typing through a membrane as I am then it may be for you.

ever hear of a beer hat?

man....people these days.....

haha....

Before this thread gets completely off track...

If the OP admits to being clumsy, then yes, a keyboard protector is recommended.

I'm not sure about Scotch tape for the speakers, as that may leave residue when the tape is removed. Perhaps a couple of iPhone/iPod touch screen protectors (which won't leave as much adhesive residue when removed), cut to fit over most of the speaker grills? Covering them completely would definitely reduce sound clarity; I strongly recommend leaving a few holes uncovered.

There's another and much larger potential entryway no one's mentioned yet: the peripheral/power ports on the sides. I'd be more worried about a liquid-sugar tsunami sloshing into my USB and FireWire ports than into my speakers.

yes i did admit to being clumsy in one of my posts,

good point about the ports on side, but im not too worried since gravity is on my side on that one and it looks like it would be hard for fluids to actually get inside through there, unlike the keyboard and speaker are.

Get the full body Invisible Shield for the Macbook Pro?

Does it cover the speakers? Anybody know?

dude! thanks! i think you nailed it!

thats actually not a bad idea lol!

seriously, i would consider a cup with a straw and rubber around straw hole. like a sippy cup for adults....i have a few myself.

i have dropped them a few times and very very little liquid gets out, if any.

Yeah it is permanent not something you can take on and off.

It is easy to remove if you want to take it off for good but once it has been removed it can't be put back on really.

Edit

You could also use this when you are drinking but you won't be able to type lol

I too thought that the only way to use a computer was with a Coke in hand. And I had done so for 40+ years since I started in college (yes there were computers then!) But I found out I was wrong. I quit Coke "cold turkey" back in January, can still use the computer, and have dropped 40 pounds. Most of that weight loss can be attributed to my 2-3 cans/day habit.

I will say that I never lost a keyboard due to Coke spills, but I did lose one trying to clean one with a wet rag.
