After upgrading to iOS 8, my keyboard shortcuts from iOS 7/Mavericks are not on the phone. I can see all of the shortcuts on my cMBP, and when I add a new one on my iPhone, it shows up on the MBP, but not vise versa. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this (other than re-adding all <50 of them)?

I have set up my iPad as a new device (not by choice, I didn’t see the option while upgrading to iOS 8) and after logging in to iCloud, they did appear. So it’s definitely not broken in iOS 8. No idea how to fix it though.

Trying to log out and log in into iCloud?

After looking at the suggested threads at the bottom of the page, I saw this thread to followed what grockk said, and it seemed to work (for now)!

Sorry, I don't have any other ideas (Perhaps I could be more of a help if I was in your situation, with a brand new iPhone 6 )

IOS Keyboard Shortcuts - Bug with iCloud?

Since OSX and IOS keyboard shortcuts are shared... they must sync via iCloud, but for my iPad Air this has been a disappointing and frustrating problem.

On some days it works, some days all the keyboard shortcuts have vanished, since the iOS 8 update. iOS 8.0.2 even worse.

I noticed this in the past few days - before (iOS 8.0) when I did the "fix", the shortcuts would remain working after multiple restarts. Now with iOS 8.0.2, the shortcuts disappear every time I restart the phone. I have just given up for now, iOS 8.0.3 or 8.1 or whatever better have a permanent fix for this...

I decided to take the plunge to iOS 8 from 7.1.2, against my better judgement. In my experience with Apple of the last few years, there is ALWAYS an issue with EVERY UPDATE that I do. Whether it's iOS or Mac OS X related. I remember, when I RARELY had any issues after updates. Profits are high for Apple, so I guess Cook doesn't mind any issues with it's products. Or at least not enough to jump on fixing them.

The only workaround I've found for this is to restart my 5S every time the shortcuts disappear. Which seems to happen randomly and intermittently. Some days, I wouldn't have to restart all day. Other days, I'm restarting my phone 4-5 times just to get my shortcuts. I have a crap load of them, and do use it regularly. So needless to say, this bug is a HUGE inconvenience for me. And I'm quite sure for quite a number of people as well.

Apple needs to go back to the old ways of taking their time to get things out with very few bugs. And stop trying to get things out so they can make profit before the quarter is over. That's the difference between Jobs and Cook. Jobs was about quality. Cook is about profits.

I noticed this today on my iPad mini. Made a hard reset and my shortcuts came back . I have no idea if the issue will come back or not . No problem on my iPhone 6. The iPhone was set up as new , not the iPad.

In the time since I updated my iPad Air from iOS 7.1.2 to iOS 8.0.0 and then iOS 8.0.2 my keyboard shortcuts have been coming and going, randomly and intermittently.

Sometimes my shortcuts appear in the list (Settings.. General.. Keyboard.. Shortcuts) but they will not work, and sometimes they do work.

There is no CONSISTENT pattern, no rhyme nor reason, that I have been able to correlate with the behavior that I have seen.

My guesses are an intermittent iCloud problem.. there are hundreds of comments about this in dozens of threads on discussions.apple.com but their search function is so lame most do not show up in the Apple discussions search results.

Try Google. Limit search results to the past month. You will see a lot, more than 150 discussions...

ios keyboard shortcuts site:discussions.apple.com

There are so many workarounds (some may work temporarily for some and not for others, as reported by many other users) this really seems like a random and intermittent bug.

My own suspicions are interaction with the new PREDICTIVE KEYBOARD, or an iOS memory manager problem, or a random iCloud bug.

IF you make detailed comment about your symptoms at

https://www.apple.com/feedback/

there will be a better chance for us all that it may get fixed.

This fixed the shortcut issue for me.

At least for now.

Barring the iCloud Drive update.* I signed out of iCloud and back in.* iCloud Drive says "on".* But turned everything off on iCloud, except Contacts, Backup (but turned everything off within the Backup option, as I don't need any of them backed up, and I'd have to pay for more space on iCloud to be able to), and Find My Phone.
*
Shortcuts came back because of signing out and in, but I'm thinking because I kept Backup "on", my shortcuts haven't disappeared.* It's been almost 2 days, and they are still there.* Before doing these steps, my shortcuts would disappear after only a few*minutes of signing out and in to iCloud.

Except for a wifi glitch that made my shortcuts disappear for a few seconds yesterday, my shortcuts haven't disappeared.

I even turned off Backup just to see what would happen. *But the shortcuts stayed. *I'm guessing because I chose to do an actual Backup on to iCloud. *My shortcuts synced, a remained in sync. *That's just my guess based on the trial and error methods I've done.

But it still points a finger to issues with iOS 8. *As I've never had to do any of these under iOS 7, and never had issues with shortcuts. *Another thing to point out. *Since updating to iOS 8, my generic charging cable I use at work no longer works as it used to when I was using iOS 7. *I get a message saying it's incompatible. *And it either isn't charging, or charging extremely slow. *Prior to iOS 8, that cable charged my 5S pretty quickly, with no issues. *Oh Apple. **shaking head*

Hopefully this will help others.

cheers.

Lightning Cable Issues with iOS 8 and/or iOS 7?

There is a chip in newer Lightning cables. Nothing new with iOS 8 but there could be a coincidence for you here. That chip ensures the cable is Apple-approved. (Some aftermarket cables have a cloned or counterfeited chip. Apple charges a certification fee for aftermarket cables, and license fee for the chips.)

Some have reported "dust or lint" in the connector socket (removable with a wooden toothpick) and others reported finger oils or a film of debris, or an invisible layer of corrosion on the contacts for the sync/charge cable. Some say after you disconnect the USB end, insert and remove the cable from the iPad or iPhone repeatedly... many times... which cleans the contacts... if that does not work use 99% isopropyl alcohol or a lint free cloth or an eraser to clean the contacts. (There is a thin gold plating, which should never corrode, but there could be a film on the contacts.)

Try that, report back, it worked for me, for awhile. I have some aftermarket cables and some Apple cables. The Apple cables (3x to 5x more expensive) usually work better.

Thanks GeoFan. I'll give those a go. Just odd that it was working perfectly fine, just as good as the official Apple cable, prior to updating to 8.

What are your iCloud settings as far as documents and data?

I'm afrait I spoke a bit to fast . I lost all my shortcuts on both iphone and ipad today. I believe it's after toggling on iCloud Drive . I toggled it back off but my shortcuts are still nowhere to be found.
I guess we are on the same boat now...

Let's cross our fingers that between Yosemite and iOS 8.1 coming out things will be fixed sooner than later !

PS : Shortcuts are back ! They were on my iPhone after a full battery charge last evening and they were on my iPad this morning after charging during the night . Can this be related ?

I also updated to Yosemite during the night but shortcuts were back on iPhone before that ...

I am still seeing the keyboard shortcuts coming and going, hour to hour, day to day, randomly and intermittently, ever since iOS 8 on my iPad Air... Apple still will not provide much help. I spent an hour on the phone with a tech who was empathetic but said to "do a backup and a restore" and call back in the morning...

Keyboard Shortcuts on iOS will always go away after a reboot and then (sometimes but not always) in an hour or so they will magically reinstate themselves... iCloud server issue? iOS memory management issue? Even when they DO NOT WORK, they are visible in the list... Settings.. General.. Keyboard.. Shortcuts..

Some suggest turning OFF the Predictive Keyboard and waiting a few minutes and turning it back on.

Others suggest turning OFF the iCloud Drive... wait.. then turn it back on.

Some suggest adding a different English keyboard (Canadian anyone?) and deleting the standard English keyboard...

All of these temporary workarounds sometimes work, sometimes not, and it's still seeming like a random and intermittent bug, somewhere, somehow...

Apple? Please Help?

The more this gets reported.. the sooner it may be fixed?

Sorry for not chiming in that much, but does anyone know if 8.1 (coming tomorrow, thank God!) will fix this? And luckily after I upgraded to iCloud Drive my shortcuts still remained.

One thing I just discovered that worked for me is manually adding a keyboard shortcut on my Mac. On my phone all of them keep disappearing until I restart my phone, except the one that I added on my Mac. Not exactly ideal but maybe this is a workaround of sorts.
