I'm not really sure if you're joking, or if you didn't get the point...
What's the point?

When I charge my phone by the computer at home, I'd prefer this cable to a standard one. I put everything that I charge just next to the computer, and longer cables equals more clutter on the desk than shorter cables.

When I leave my house without my bag, I'd prefer this cable to a standard one because it's smaller and thus easier to have in the pocket without tangling (I've got keys and headphones in the same pocket, less tangling is a good thing in my book).

With a cable that short, it would be difficult to use the phone while charging. I can't even imagine using it on an iPad.

This is why a standard cable is advantageous.

So would someone who has this Nomad cable attached to his key chain. What's your point?

There's no situation I will be in that I will reach for this key cable over a standard cable.

I really don't care if somebody buys this or not. I just think it's pointless.

..I think you're missing the point of the whole "it's really small and it fits on a keychain" concept.

A third party cable does not fit that criteria...

I agree, it does not, but, it's $4 shipped. If this keychain was $5 or less, I would get one. It's simply not worth 6X the price of a generic cable that can be stuffed into your car, gym bag, briefcase, etc.

Do you think it's a) easier, b) harder or c) equally hard to find a powered USB-port when you need to charge your phone than it is to find a powered USB-port and a lightning cable?

Seriously, dude... Do you think it's useless to have jumper cables in your car because they're no good without an external power source?

this is not the same thing whatsoever...

What's the point?
It's not about how common or uncommon it is to have access to powered USB ports, it's about how much easier it is to find one and be able to charge your phone with this cable in comparison to finding a way to charge your phone without this cable.

If you're the kind of person that is using your iPhone when it's plugged in to the computer, sure.

It's pointless TO YOU, because for YOU there is no need for this kind of product. See the difference between a product not being of any use FOR YOU and a product no being of any use period?

this is not the same thing whatsoever...

I like the security of having cable(s) readily available in case the battery's gone dead - despite it being useless unless I can find an external power source.

Am I referring to the Nomad cable or jumper cables? If it's not the same thing whatsoever it should be pretty obvious, am I right?

It's pointless to more people in this thread than not.

It's pointless to more people in this thread than not.

As is an insurance that covers the cost for treating breast cancer, does that mean it's a useless insurance in and of itself? Because that's how some people make it sound, that something that they personally don't think they'd use is pointless.

For someone who has or is always around their car, gym bag, briefcase etc. and is comfortable with buying a cable that come with no kind of CE marking or similar, sure.

For someone who isn't and who prefers the smaller size over the longer cables and like the fact that it's certified by Apple, that might simply not be true.

To each his own, some people would never pay a cent for a movie they could download illegally for free, others wouldn't even dream about download a movie illegally and gladly pays.
