I'm just going to butt in here- my step brother (just finished 6th grade) told me that he has a typing class, where the teacher (of 25 years) was adamant about never using the backspace key. I found this alarming, because it means she was still teaching typewriter technique. We have a backspace for a reason: to delete for mistakes.
Along the same lines, calculators are forbidden in the classroom, because you will not be able to use them in the real world. Trust me, my employer would much rather me use a calculator than pencil and paper. It's faster, and more accurate.
Absolutely NO use of phones or electronic devices. I use my phone as a tool for effective communication constantly at work. And yes, I text my friends/family, and no, my boss doesn't care. He does it too.
No wikipedia. If I need to learn about something, guess where I go to read about it?
Learn theory in school. At work, I learn applications, and my company's methods (which are nowhere close to what I learned in school.)

I have a few complaints about the 16 years I spent in school. I graduated college two years ago, and I have barely used any of the information I learned there. Of all the information pumped into my head, I'm going to estimate I've used 2.5%.

No more.

Typing teachers still teach not to use the backspace because of autocorrect. Most people will type faster if they go back and correct the errors at the end. Many errors will be fixed by the autocorrect.

Students need to know how to do math without a calculator. Knowing your multiplication tables is the foundation for many other things in mathematics.

But its stupid when you are expected to use more calculator for basic trig. In fact its absurd.

Actually, I'd rather just have a blinking icon at the top that says "Dad Surveillance Program Operating". It's more the knowledge that I can do it then actually doing it.

When I was a kid we had a kid's telephone line in our house. My father had an extension of it in his den. We were sure that he listened in to all of our calls. It wasn't until many years later we found out that extension had never been wired. It was just a phone on his desk not plugged into anything.

What are you concerned about her doing?

What are you concerned about her doing?

Nothing yet... She's eleven. However, I believe that her knowing that anything she does can be seen by Daddy could help keep her from making a few of the bad decisions that her half-sister, my former step-daughter has attempted. I have a few IT rules for her; No accounts set up without approval from Daddy.
Daddy has the password to all accounts.

We actually have a contract on it. There are penalties if she breaks one of my rules and there are rewards for responsible technology use.

Your brain is always with you a calculator is not. People need to at least know how to do it without the calculator, too.

If you work in a normal workplace, you will have a computer with a calculator on it. I use it to figure out percentages, and prices, etc. What's wrong with that?

There are many times in life you will not have a calculator. Everyone should be able to do simple math without the aid of a calculator. I went to a store one day, the power was out. The girl working didn't know how to total the purchases and figure sales tax. There is life beyond technology. Math is a very important skill.

Holy crap, I agree with you on something!

Technology is there to make our lives more convenient, but it should be something we leverage, not rely on outright at the expense of our own personal skills and abilities.

We'll mark the day on the calendar. :) You never know when you need math skills. Imagine your iPhone battery has died and you need to do math.
