Export to quicktime?

I have not used keynote but am interested in this discussion because I'm considering making the purchase.
How well does the export to quicktime option work for presenting in windows or macs without keynote installed? If possible it would be good to avoid export to powerpoint. I would go for irbdavid's option of export to pdf but generally have other media to embed in my presentations.
Might have to go and hunt out that trial version and give it a shot for myself!

Exporting to QuickTime creates monster files which play as movies. I'm not sure I see that being a practical alternative unless your presentation is perfectly timed, and you won't have to go backwards. Exporting to Flash is another possibility, but can be tricky as only a few of the transitions available in Keynote work in Flash.

I agree on your point about going backwards, but you can export it as an interactive movie, only jumping forward slides on click/key press.

I like Keynote a lot (I have version 2.0.2) and think it beats powerpoint, with the following exceptions:

1. When you click for a Line shape it puts a line on the page that is set at a 45 degree angle that you immediately have to adjust. Powerpoint waits for you to draw the line first.

2. In powerpoint you can select multiple objects and then when you increase or decrease the size - by pulling one of the corners for example - ALL the objects resize accordingly. In Keynote you have to highlight the objects and then go into the Inspector and use the Metrics section to adjust the size. The same result occurs but its not as intuitive.

3. Powerpoint has much more built-in shapes and clip-art than Keynote.

Clear those three up and its unbeatable. As it is I happily accept these quirks anyway and always try and use Keynote first.

Cheers

I like to save as a PDF file when I share with a PC. That way they can open it in Acrobat Reader. It doesn't have all of the fanct builds and transitions, but for viewing it's great.

You can adjust the size of an object in Keynote by selecting it and dragging the handles (no Inspector required). If you want to resize multiple object simultaneously, group them first, and drag a handle.

Well I've tried that. It doesn't work. Once the objects are grouped you cannot drag any of the handles and in fact neither can you use the metric panel to resize it. Maybe this is resolved in Keynote 3 but my version 2 cannot do it.

Must be. I don't remember having this problem with 2.0, but it's been a while.

This alone is what keeps me from switching over to Keynote (shapes, not clip-art). I have to make use of a lot of diagrams in my talks, and Keynote's drawing/diagramming abilities are just way too limited for me. Last time I checked, Keynote couldn't even handle a free-form curve.

At least Keynote can display on the 30" ACD. PPT slideshows are a wreck if you're on a large screen. I would assume MS would address this in the 08 version.
