CarPlay mess of allowing the car manufacturers update or not update needs to be resolved. It looks like CarPlay is like Android and when Google comes out with an update and if you are lucky your phone vendor will update your phone model but it won't happen very quickly.

Well ****. Mazda and some Toyota models share the same infotainment systems, so that is a reason why I'm sure. Just sucks because I like my 2016 Mazda6 quite a bit.

Get to work Honda and Toyota (and others). You're being made to look like fools.

And BMW Group. Officially a CarPlay partner, but AWOL. I was at at Mini dealership recently to look at the new Clubman and the first question I asked the salesperson was about CarPlay. When is it coming? Would the existing head units be upgradable? He'd heard those questions before. He had no idea. Thank you, goodbye.

Sorry but I can not read any more carplay "will be in the next xx model in the next xx year", too title too late, too beta for too long. I don't care anymore.

BMW is coming around. Most 2017 Bimmers will offer CarPlay as an option of an option. I think the missing models are 5, X1 and X3. But the all new 5 is due early next year and X3 is due out late 2017. True, Mini and Rolls have yet to announce anything yet. Should be soon since the borrow the same electronics. Kind of interesting in that Mini is more customizable than Bimmers.

Intentional perhaps? Like the iTunes phone, maybe Apple can say "well we tried partnering with a phone manufacturer but the experience was crap so instead we made our own car".

The car is a logical next stop for tech firms now the combustion engine is being looked upon like a naughty schoolchild.

Conventional car corps can try and keep Apple out of their cars but they are coming and they know it.

***Not surprised by the VW problems described. A once great customer service company now run by bena counters.

I cant believe I drive a 2015 Mercedes costing nearly six figures and cant get Car play....

I guess I need to look at Kia next time...

I have seen no official announcement to this effect, and at Mini at least, the sales staff are not aware of any plans, at least none they can talk about. Got a bit of a sales pitch for Mini Connected, the app, but this is hardly the same thing. Customization has been a Mini feature from the start. They are even more customizable today than they were when I bought the one I own now in 2003. I am finally on the verge of buying a new car but I had to walk right out the door of the Mini dealer because they are lagging on the tech side, and could give me no assurances whatsoever about the upgradability of the head units. Not good.

No official announcement to what effect? BMW's price lists and order guides for most 2017 models are out. You can d/l on Bimmerfest or F30Post. Customers are now ordering their 2017 models with CarPlay. Can't get anymore official than that.

As for Mini I said it and Rolls haven't announced anything so what is there to dispute there? I'm agreeing with you.

I hope Ford do the same with my Focus, having CarPlay instead of Sync 2 would be a dream

I was very, very excited for Carplay, and is one of the reasons I went with two Hyundais over the comparable Mazda models. Unfortunately, my new Sante Fe did get the update, my 2015 Sonata didn't. Although I must say, after using Carplay for about a month, I usually deactivate it unless I'm using Maps. The UI is just wonky, it reads texts aloud when I don't want it too, and the Music app, which I thought would be the best part, is actually the worst. My factory-installed music playing app on the Hyundai is way better, and it's still not great. In the Carplay app, you can't skip through a song by touching on the timeline, which is insane since you can do that on every iOS device. When you're listening to a song you can't tap on the song and see other songs on the same album, which i was really hoping for. It just feels like a really neutered version of iOS, and I hope they fix it up soon. Maybe it varies by car company, but as it is, the Hyundai one isn't great, which doesn't bode well for the Kia version, I'm afraid.

This is where VW should take note. My 2015 VW Golf doesn't have carplay but the hardware is compatible. To get the software I have to take the car to a VW dealer and have them install the software to enable it at a cost of £200. :(

I can update my navigation maps at home for free so why can't I do the same for carplay?

Can you? We have a 2015 SportWagen and I'd love to add CarPlay to it.

Just picked up a used 2011 Escape and installed a CarPlay-compatible stereo into it and am loving CarPlay very much. The stock UI on the unit is horrible -- I would have expected Kenwood to be better at vehicle UIs as it's what they do -- but at least now I only need it for navigation (at least the Garmin map UI isn't too bad) and if I listen to FM radio (for NPR news and in emergencies, mostly).

I'll be using CarPlay's mapping 90% of the time, but long road trips make it a good idea to have GPS available that does not depend on having a cellular connection available.

Hey Chrysler! Are you paying attention!?

Thanks for that Siri Eyes Free update (which doesn't work) that you just issued the other day (despite it coming out in 2012).

Siri Eyes Free works just fine in my Dodge after installing the Uconnect update they released back in May.

It depends on which generation system is in your car. Some VWs coming off the line today still have the older incompatible systems. I only found out about it through a couple of VW club forums

Time to check the Vortex, then.

Does not work very well in my Jeep.

I can't tell wether I'm supposed to press the Voice control button, or press and hold it. Neither works reliably, and Siri can take a long time to "beep" and become active, if it does at all.

According to my reading, only on the M and X models, a $300 option (yikes).

Not disputing anything but merely pointing out that Mini (part of the BMW group) has not announced support for CarPlay, but even if they do for the 2017 models, it seems likely that the head units for previous models won't be upgradable.

I try not to think about Rolls.

It's a long press on the steering wheel VR button to activate it, at least that's how it works in my Challenger with the Uconnect 8.4. I've not ever had any trouble with it working at all.
