Your parents actually gave you those things?

I remember we had to walk barefoot in the snow just to stare at the candy store. One year we recycled enough Coke cans to get a piece each. My 8-year-old sister, who was pregnant at the time, dropped that piece of candy and it fell through our house's floorboards, only to be eaten by the chickens.

You had chickens?

Because it doesn't need to progress yet. The console swan songs are coming out (Halo 4, Beyond) that show off what these machines can really do, personally I think if they shared the tech to get those games looking that good we could happily live with 2 more years of Xbox 360 and PS3. And why does it need to progress? What's to add to the PS3 other than a better graphics card?
You can install a 1tb drive, it can play the best streamed media and physical media and looks great doing it. 4k is the next big thing to push for. So long that the next gen games run at 1080p minimum with some pushing 4k, that's the only thing they can really improve right now.

And their online infrastructure isn't great but has been partially fixed by Playstation Plus' automatic patching, and has been completely fixed on the PS Vita with full background downloads.

Strongly disagree here. Graphics are part of it, but not the whole story. These machines are both currently slow in many ways, the GPU and CPU are architecture from '04 I believe, that is ancient in tech years. Graphics will greatly improve just as they always do, no question about it. Look at a PS2>PS3 game or XBOX>360 game for comparison and those were 4-6 years between releases. A lot changes.

True actual 1080p and 60FPS standard across all games next go around. Current games reach maximum 720 lines of resolution because the graphics cards are pretty butt. The stuff that is wowing everyone is mostly smoke and mirrors. Bloom effects, motion blur, that cartoonish look that games have now are all ways for devs to make it look better.

If the 360 utilizes blu ray as the P4 will then you can this time around have more larger scale games and bigger worlds. Not that BS Sony was spouting because the P3 even with Blu ray was too crippled in the RAM dept. to do much with it, as well as the read speed of their drive was too slow.

Speaking of RAM that is a major gimp currently as well. There is no magical process where these systems have untapped potential. That is developer speak they always use for sales. Everyone in the gaming community knows that. Uncharted 2 was about as good as the P3 could do, and Gears 2 was about the best the 360 could do. Both were in 2009.

It will be the same as every other time. Once the new ones finally do come out people will be in awe of what the developers accomplish with them. Some more casual types are fine with bad hardware for another 5 years, you all can have it since they will make games for the 360 and P3 after the new ones, a lot of us and it is a lot are wanting new stuff and have been for awhile.

You wanna know what it was like growing up back in the stone age? I'll tell you.

For the first 11 years of my life, our TV only got THREE CHANNELS! On a clear day, we could sometimes get a 4th over UHF.

Hell, most of the time, I had to...like...go outside and crap, because there was rarely anything on TV. It was horrible.

I grew up being the remote control for the first 10 years of my life.

That would've been my fate if dad didn't buy a VCR when I was around 4. He spent most of his time watching movies on it rather than the air channels.

That reminds me of what my dad used to do when he used to work at a Radio Shack back in the mid 80's. He had access to cable there, so he'd buy a pack of blank tapes, and set a bunch of VCRs to record movies off HBO at certain times throughout the day and night. He'd collect them all the next day, then take them home so mom and I would have something to watch throughout the week.

...I guess piracy kinda comes natural to my family. :p

I wrote some C++ the other day on my ipad. I drew a picture. People have made entire applications from the iPad. The world is what you make of it. So is an iPad. Stop forcing your opinions on others and open your mind a little.

Lol i guess my mind is more open than yours since im not forcing my opinion to nobody yet YOU are

Btw did you learn C++ using the ipad ? What resources did you have to learn back in the day and what made you want to learn ?

When you say 'teach your kid to be a consumer' as an implied outcome of getting a child an iPad you are stating an opinion as fact and that is more-or-less a forcing of opinion onto others. I am not forcing my opinion of being open minded any more than you are forcing your opinion.

Well my parents got me a commodore 64 when I was 4 years old, I started programming Basic on it when I was 6. I learned TI-Basic on my own when I got my first TI calculator then I took a Turbo Pascal class in high school and made a fractal generator and tetris clone. I dabbled in C / C++ and then learned it full on in school at college. I have no idea what drove me to be a developer when I was a kid. When I got older and was in high school trying to decide what career to pursue and then what college to go to based on that career choice it was an easy decision, I already knew how to program I enjoy it and it pays well.

Except for graphics work, to be more than just a consumer on an iPad you really need a bluetooth keyboard, at least for me.

How kotaku.com wrote this headline:

"Survey: Kids Want Wii U More Than iPhones"

Gotta hand it to those hacks. They can't write worth a ****, but they know how to spin with the best of them.

Yes, instead let's give them all footballs and dolls and ensure the entire future generation ends up as chauvinistic, subservient and stupid as this one.<wry grin of course>

Yes, because as we all know, sitting in a corner with a $500 tablet builds character so much better than interacting with real people.

When I was a kid, we were happy to get a bowl of soup and a piece of hard candy.

Now kids are so fat they can barely leave the house and all they want are things that will insure that they remain fat.

You got a bowl of soup? We could only wish for that. We had to walk across the fields to town to get our hard candy, too.

you guys had bowls of soup and candy?

i didn't eat from 1929-1935

I'm starting to think I'm the only person left on the planet who doesn't want an ipad. Ever. I prefer a MBA and iphone thanks.

To be fair, it was only introduced just recently.

Microsoft Surface release - October 26 - next to last place
Nintendo Wii U release - November 18 - second place

Best advice to stop kids being spoilt bratts.

Make them physically WORK to get their "Very Expensive" gifts.

Even if you said something like, the iPad is too expensive, but if you work/do PROPER chores to earn half the money, then we will put the other half toward it for Christmas.

If they just get given too much too easy they won't value anything.
If they know how much time, effort and work they had to put into getting it, they will appreciate and look after it much much more.

The only thing a survey like this shows is how well known a brand is. US kids all seem to know that an ipad
a) exists
b) it is apparently something cool to have

Honestly from looking at the options I think they mostly chose ipad simply because of a). As in they have heard of it before.
I doubt that means they really want one. I wouldn't know what to do with one at that age. It is pointless but the presence in the media especially in the US is overwhelming and kids are stupid even more so than adults. They want what is hip even if they don't know why or what is really the point.

Most kids want to play in school under the table or in breaks. An ipad would be way too big. An ipod touch or PSP would be more useful.

Thank you parents for what they did, they gave you tools in the end and that made you want to learn and "create" :) thats what im trying to say (english not my native).

Anyway i agree with that and never forced/wanted to force the opinion more like just give an idea, in the end its not my job anyway.

Cheers.

ipad4 is 3 times as powerful at the PS3 and xbox... all it needs is a physical controller and it replaces ps3 and xbox perfectly..

You spelled douchebag wrong.

And you spelled "I'm a curmudgeonly bastard who completely lacks a sense of humor and cries myself to sleep every night because no one loves me not even my mom who left me at the train depot when I was two and now have abandonment issues because of it which I take out on random people on the internet because I don't have another outlet to express my inner rage" wrong.
