The only things the Kindle fire will kill are most 7" Android tablet and the Playbook! Or maybe not since Lenovo came out with a 7" tablet with camera and such for $156.

Exactly. And in fact, I don't imagine Amazon ever intended for this to be an iPad killer. It's an entirely different product, with a different target for usage.

I used the same reply for the iPad when it came out. The iPod Touch sells because it's portable and you can easily carry it in a pocket.

The fire also has only 8 Gig and is designed to be used in the cloud.

so the answer is no.

The fire is closer to a challenger with the iPad (though for some reason people argue this because if the lack of capacity), they are geared towards the consumer market as entertainment/multimedia devices. As to weither it hurts the iPad remains to be seen, but at the price I'm pretty sure the product is going to be successful in its own right even if it doesn't damage the iPad (though it would be nice if it did to drive down the ridiculous pricing the iPad is at).

The iPod Touch isn't in the same market in my opinion. It would be like a Ford Explorer taking out the Ford Mustang. Both different products with each fitting their own use.

The real iPod Touch killer is the iPhone.

I know few people who have the iPod Touch. Most end up buying the iPhone and get an iPod Nano for exercise.

For me it's a miss. Too big to be a portable music device or go to camera. The touch/iphone "works" because you can listen to music, snap a picture, look up directions and easily carry it with you.

I think the new e-ink kindle models are a lot more interesting. Although I'm not sure I want to touch the screen. I eat and drink using the kindle now. Or if they are trying to sell movies what about popcorn? :)

As far as I know, iOS still has better content creation apps too.

yes but it doesn't run ios:p

And that is already the best feature of the Kindle Fire. Who wants to run iOS when you can have Android? And yes, I -am- serious about this.

The more I used iOS, the more I hated it and its many unnecessary restrictions and limitations. The only way to make an iOS device acceptable for me was to jailbreak it - and I got sick and tired of the continuous rat race between Apple and the jailbreakers as well.

Now I don't know what Amazon did to their version of Android, and at this point, nobody can tell how much they customized Android and how much they closed it. But I trust Amazon more than I trust Apple and prefer to purchase digital content from Amazon. As soon as the Kindle Fire (or its rumored bigger 10" brother) will be available in Germany, I will buy it and blog about my first hand experience with the gadget.

i think i was wrong. considering the ipod's price point and its shocking lack of hardware improvements, i am thinking the op mAy be right. if i were wanting to play games, if i were wanting to watch movies, and if i were wanting to surf the net / email, but was uncomfortable paying 500 for an ipad, i might consider an ipod or fire.

an old ipod with a tiny screen is no match for a new fire with 7 inches. i'd say that apple has decided to abandon the ipod. i thought we'd get an ipod 5, but all we got was white. not many christmas shoppers are going to be tempted by that. how sad :(

The KF will tap into a little bit of the sales of the iPod Touch and the iPad 2.

After Apple Tick Tocked(w/o the tock) the iPod Touch this year, more customers will be looking elsewhere for Touch Toys.

The lack of camera(s) on it pretty much is a deal breaker for me. I think at least a front camera for video chat or self portraits would be useful. The Fire definitely seems focused on being a media machine and not a communication machine. But these days I think you need to be both to really stay alive.

Why is a tablet being compared to an iPod touch? The kindle fire would be more in competition with the iPad.

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Player appears to be the true iPod touch killer.

  • Cortex A8 1GHz processor
  • Android 2.2 (Froyo), upgradable to 2.3 (Gingerbread)
  • Rear camera (3.2mp) front camera (VGA)
  • Available in 8GB and 16GB versions
  • microSD card slot, expandable upto 32GB
  • WiFi and Bluetooth
  • 4inch WVGA Screen
  • DivX, Xvid, WMV, MPEG4, and H.264
  • MP3, WMA, AAC,Ogg, Flac

4" screen at $229 and 5" at $269.

It's being compared because of price point. For $200, I can get A or I can get B. Which offers more and which has the most up to date tech. Screen/unit size will sway people one way or the other. But it's fair to state that for some people's needs, the Fire and Touch are competing products.

I've been reading about and considering those. But the 800 x 480 screen doesn't sound too special, when compared to the iPod touch.

I just looked at them too and thought they were pretty lame. screen rez is the pits.
I think the KF looks better but it is too big to be pocketable. Still at the same price point some people will be going with the bigger is better rule. I don't see the KF as an iPad competitor because the iPad has much more to offer in features and quality. The KF is hitting a price point that the Touch lives in.
