I have owned both an iPad 1 and 2 and I ordered a Kindle Fire on launch day to play with and see what it was like. Overall I was impressed with the device, and its connection to the Amazon ecosystem, but ultimately I decided that it was not for me. I have an iPhone for email and web browsing in the living room, and thought that I wanted a larger screen. But for me (I'm 58 and my eyes are not the best) the 7" screen was not much better than my iPhone. However my stepdaughter had been thinking about the Kindle Fire and played with mine a while and liked it; she said she would not consider the iPad not because of price but because of size and weight. My wife and I decided to get her a KF for her college graduation present next month, and since I was going to return mine anyway we just decided to give her mine instead. I think for what she wants she will love it. I just wish there was a way to transfer my cloud membership to her account (I bought the $20/yr unlimited space for music).

I gave my ipad1 to my brother after I purchased a Kiindle Fire for myself and one for my mother. We are both big Amazon users. I also have an iPad2 and eagerly await what comes up with the iPad3. The main reason I wanted the Fire was because I have an Amazon Prime account and would like to take advantage of the free films/TV shows.

Magid: Kindle Fire is about as useful as an iPad and much cheaper

A story at TabTimes.com has me wondering if Apple's (AAPL) market dominance in tablets might soon be over. The article, which quoted Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney, predicted that Amazon will ship 5 million Kindle Fires in the fourth economic quarter "before reaching 12 million units in 2012 and 20 million units in 2013."

The Kindle Fire is no iPad killer. But at less than half the price, it's definitely an iPad wounder. I own an iPad and a Kindle Fire and when it comes to what I do most with the devices, I don't have a strong preference between the two.
...
But sorry, family, I'm not planning to give away my Kindle Fire because I find myself using it almost as often as my iPad 2. If I feel like reading or watching a movie at home, I'm likely to grab the iPad or the MacBook. But if I'm headed to the gym or going out for coffee, I'm more likely to grab the Kindle Fire because it fits into my pocket.
