Kindle Fire Won't Crush Other Android Tablets, May Not Increase iPad Sales Say Other Analysts.
i cant wait for new tablets, im sure they will surpass apples soon, FINALLY, better and cheaper, NO MORE HAVING TO JB

----------

It amazes me that so many people think that Apple chose the 3.5" form factor for the iPhone on a whim and kept it as 3.5" with the retina display for fun.

That size was chosen because it was the perfect size where a person with an average sized hand could reach all pixels on the screen while holding it in one hand.

Apple also chose the 9.7-inch display with a 4:3 ratio because it was the best ratio for viewing magazines and it was the right size for typing on for average sized hands.

They are tried different sizes in the lab before arriving on the current form factor.

I highly doubt that we will see a 7" iPad because it just does not seem right and the sales figures of the 7" tablets on the market show what people are buying. The Kindle is not a tablet but a reader that thinks its a tablet.
apple like other marketing departments have software to determine the demand, there will be all kinds of screen every where you go in the future, your computer will be your mobile device, the screens will display it, you will not need iCloud to take your computer everywhere with you.

simple and sound solution .,, use any size any where, apple atm is one size fits all, same with apps

I think you are a solid customer for an 11" Air. But then again, you could just wait for Siri for iPad if you don't like to type. When I travel with the iPad I just take a bluetooth keyboard with me for taking long notes.

Ultimately there's an Apple product for just about everyone. If you or others don't see the point in buying an iPad, then don't buy one. Telling people on the internet that you aren't buying one is kinda boring.

never questioned the point of an ipad, i just said its not gonna replace my laptop for some obvs reasons

YESSS!!! XP forever! I upgraded my Vista to XP Pro, and I'm never downgrading again. I'd even upgrade a brand new Windows PC running Win7 to XP. Same with MS Office 2004, still better than 2011.

W7 is neat. No reason to go back to XP if you have that, really. And i say this after running XP for what? close to a decade. W7 never gave me any grief, and the UI changes are actually great. If only W7 and Lion could have a baby... oh well, maybe W8 will be one step towards that. Time will tell.

GMA poll suggests a very strong iPad Christmas, almost 3 to 1 over Fire, and Fire squashes other Android tabs....

But GMA poll is very unscientific, still...

Due to my line of business I have to use Windows, and I agree with you about 7...

I downloaded 8 beta and I'm telling you, it's got vista written all over it. I got confused, and I am a so-called IT applications guy... There are TWO internet explorers: IE 9, with the regular desktop, IE10, with the metro desktop. A huge UI hurdle: You can't use arrow keys on the keyboard to scroll around 'tiles' or screens; seems to be an easy win for me I don't know why they didn't do it. I can go on and on, but I hope MS has a better plan.

An Apple fan here, but not a Microsoft hater.

Ridiculous, its not encroaching the PC market. PC market it a well established market of COURSE its not going to sell as well as a relatively new tablet market.

PCs have been around for 40+ years versus the tablet kick-off of what two years?
PCs were around in 1971 and earlier? That is news to me.

The first Microcomputer is the Altair 8800, based off the Intel 8080 processor. It appeared in 1975. So while not quite 40 years, pretty close to it.

Unless you mean PC as in IBM compatible PC. Then we have to go back to the 1981, the IBM PC 5150. That made it 30 years old this year.

If you don't mind it not having a single combined microprocessor, then there were actually several "personal computers" which predate the 8800. Including the massively influential Xerox Alto.

The very first single user, keyboard-controlled computer, the IBM 610, was introduced in 1957.

The Alto, which dating back to 1973 was not a home computer though. ;)

Really depends how we define PC. PC can mean many things, even though officially, when talking about PCs, we mean IBM Compatible PC.

k.f. Over new ipod touch

I will replace my ipod touch with kf , have been using the touch for podcast and email on WiFi at home, I think that this where amazon might steal from Apple . Household has an iPad and mac, I think everyone will have own tablet as well as phone but laptop market will shrink over time.

Amazon might ship a 10" pad

[...] they are of the belief that current Fire owners "could gravitate to more feature-rich experiences" later on with the Fire acting as a "gateway drug". [...]

Agree. The Fire is a good Amazon retail tool and a reasonable e-reader. But it's apparently just barely acceptable as a general pad computing experience. Apple (and everyone else) thinks that Fire users will be disappointed and will upgrade to iPads. Or they'll try a friend's Fire and decide to get an iPad instead. And I think that's what's going to happen.

Could Amazon be using the Kindle Fire as a "gateway drug" to a larger pad of their own at some time in the future? A future pad with a bigger screen, higher price, more complete hardware and software (volume buttons, faster processor, more multi-touch gestures, higher-resolution screen)? Specs, shmecs, I know. But the Fire is an underachiever in terms of experience, largely due to its small screen. Specs are only important when they hurt the experience. Better specs in a future 10" Amazon pad could vastly improve that experience.

Having said all that, I think a 10" Amazon pad would fail. Any 10" iPad competitor will need to be vastly better than iPad to have any chance. At a lower price point than iPad. Tough sledding. Just ask Samsung, RIM, Sylvania, Coby, Motorola, HP, and a dozen other wannabes.

But does Amazon want to beat iPad? Doubtful. I think they just want their pads to serve as at-home sales terminals and as decent e-readers. And it's not clear that a 10" screen is necessary for that.

Its still pre-beta. Patience my friend.

If they get a couple of millions of these out in the market, get people to invest further in the Amazon eco-system, and then offer them a "fire pro" comparable to the iPhone at a competitive price, why would they necessarily fail?

People paying 199 know it won't be great. They're opting for good enough, and for most, that is indeed good enough. For those who eventually see a need for a better tablet, chances are, Amazon will have an offering for them. Heck, who knows, perhaps they'll even make some trade-in offers.

I took my kindle fire to work yesterday & showed a few people. The price was the biggest selling point to these people, 2nd was that it was backed by Amazons ecosystem. I "sold" at least 5 fires yesterday. I think its a great device & a good supplement to my ipad. I love Amazons ecosystem as I do with apples ecosystem. I think that is what will crush other android tablets.

It is amazing what a little word or mouth and a good demonstration will do for a product. I get the same effect from my phone or once when a coworker brought in a Samsung Tab 10.1.

It's not even beta yet, you're using unpolished pre-alpha get-it-out-to-people-to-play-with code. What you're seeing now is only the barest preview of what the final product will be.

Even though I'm still a bit iffy on the whole Metro as the new start menu, desktop as an app thing, everything I've read thus far does show that MS knows it's not the most comfortable fit for a keyboard and mouse, and are working towards making it feel more natural for a desktop environment.

Here's hoping they succeed.

I think they should have done this out the door but I suppose they wanted to test the water first. Specifically it would have been nice to have a higher local capacity.

I was being sarcastic :). I am actually knowledgable about computer history. However, in the current context PCs--as in tablets replacing them in the "post PC era"--most certainly did not exist "40+" years ago.

I'm a geek to & everyone knows it at work. I'm honest that I love my apple products, but I always ask people 1st what they want or need to do with a device. If they say they have only $200 & want to check email & play a few games, surf the web then I will point them to the Fire. If they have more money then I will point them t the iPad. If they want to tinker & mess around I will point them to another tablet. But I will tell them that I've only had experience with such & such device but here is what I read about this one. Most of the people I come in contact with wouldn't know what to do with anything more advanced & I don't want to do the tech support. Lol.

Well, we don't go looking for Flash sites. :) So many sites use Flash that Flash is household name.

I can care less what a website uses to power its experience...but I really am not impressed with iPad's rendering of websites 100% the way they are supposed to be used (LLBean, Amazon, Boston.com and it's Comments area, and more sites).

The iPad, in general, money aside, is a pretty nice tablet. But to me/us, it's still pricey, up until weeks ago forced me to use a computer often, and has serious storage limitations at 16GB for $500 for a device that is supposed to store a lot of my music, vids, and other goodies.

Try some of the other browsers available for iPad like Terra then.
