the lag is the issue however you can already get a program that does this on mac, you use it for itunes cover art and interaction, it uses your image in the webcam. Sorry but not impressed yet.... if it can recognize feet however then i will be impressed!!!

this is useless for an ipad but could be interesting with the apple tv, of course with a larger range so you can control your device from your sofa.

I agree.. I don't see a use for this on an iPad or even a desktop or a laptop. The only true use I see here is with TV or media that you are far enough away to not be able to physically touch it... plus the interfaces currently showing up for TVs is very basic.. motion navigation could be very useful.

That was the first thing that came to my mind. Using the iPad in-car.

I always wanted to have a "carputer", long before the iPad was announced. Lately, I was thinking about getting an iPad and a vehicle-mount for it, but I was a little worried that I would have to hit a "small" interface element just to skip to the next track.

If they can make this gadget work, they'll have my money.
You may or may not already know this... or even care.

But i just wanted to let you know there is already applications (some for free) that make it so simple taps, or swipes can change songs/volume. Good stuff, I use this when driving all the time, with my iPhone though.

I think an iPad would be sorta large for in-car??

Gesture Dialed

I'm so tired of being Pocket Dialed by accident. Soon I can be Gesture Dialed.

Now at the consumer level, probably less practical use.
Could see it being handy if I was using an electronic cookbook in the kitchen and I didn't want to get all sorts of juice, oils or syrups all over my iPad. Swiping to scroll down without touching might be nice.
Maybe at the gym, keep my sweaty fingers off the device as well...

Well unless you sneaky about it. Base a system on say one handed sign language, make it popular so everyone wants to use it. Suddenly the world becomes more accessable to the hearing impaired. Which is going to lots of us in later years thanks to rock music and portable audio.

I see this right now as being the most pointless of things, though with real development and in a few years time, I believe gesture control for certain tasks will be the way of the future.

Though it would have to be far more sophisticated, you would need to have a way to control anything from almost any position without a care about what you're doing, I think that is its biggest issue, you need to be quite consistent in your movements to get them to register your input.

...

if he could only reach one inch further he could just touch the screen and not have to move his hand so much to get it to scroll. Alas he must have been born with stubby arms so this is his only hope

To all those saying "pointless," remember that early technology rarely resembles the final product.

Who looked at the early multi-touch examples 5 years ago (on large, heavy screens) and envisioned the iPad? Steve did.

I guess I understand the point that you are making, but I think these are two completely different things. Touch has been talked about for years, because it is logical. You are presented with something on the screen and you touch whatever that is in order to interact with it.

In this video, I watched the whole time just thinking... Wouldn't it be easier to just touch and move the items on the screen? He is doing these over exaggerated motions on a simple movement like swiping one page to the left or right. Now what happens when you want to swipe several pages? Every time you have to move your hand back to the other side, the screen will track that movement and you are back where you started.

My guess? Face and eye tracking on iPads and iPhones.

I totally agree... but It'll never work with ultrasound. I just think this implementation is pointless. The ridiculous part about it is that a week after this is demoed, iPad will get a front facing camera and engineers will simply be able to use the camera for this type of interaction + face/eye recognition.
