I would like to see a visual (step by step) tutorial on this procedure. It would be beneficial...

Where did you buy it from? eBay? See if the seller will do an exchange for you.

Also, I have a .6 drive and it's working fine. I wonder if this could be a different issue, though the iBooks and PowerBooks probably have different IDE controllers.

My IBookG3 works FINE with optbay and sata 2.5 HDD!

Next step I will put there 60gb SATAII ssd from SanDisk for $60. I hope it will work fine.

I think that's where the problem lies. SM2236 has some different features than SM2231 which G3 iBook's controller does not support. First one is in fact CF controller, second one is IDE. Similar but a little diferent.
If .6 works in PowerBook, it will work in iBook G4 too, as it does have that same controller as PB.

Interesting info about G3 and later Macs HDD interfaces.

I've never opened my ibook, i'm a little scared of it.. what do you think, I may ask for a remplace or try with this one... ? I must set it master or slave?

If it works for ybz90, there's no reason why .6 wouldn't work for you, as you have iBook G4 = that same ATA controller as PB Aluminum.

Use the same setting as your original drive.

I can confirm that the .6 works in my iBook 6.5. First i've installed Panther, i had issues formatting the disk at the first time, had to restart the computer and when i restart the installer all went well, formating and installing. Panther runs without problems. Then i've installed Leopard and restore backup from time machine. No problems for now, only one strange issue, Aja Test doesn't start the disks tests... it can be related to spotlight that is doing the first reindexing?

The performance gain is very noticeable in apps launch and the systems feels less laggy. Happy with the improvement. It was the first time that i open a Apple Product, it taked me all this evening but i didn''t have any major problem.

I will post the aja test results when i manage to solve the problem that i've told before.
