Kitchen iMac project

I'd really like to use MacGourmet, but unfortunately at this stage the iMac has 10.3.9 on it, MacGourmet only supports 10.4. bummer! I've used MacGourmet on my MBP, and I like it. Adding recipes is easier in my opinion to 'connessoir' which is what I'm using on the iMac at the moment.

I'm waiting for Leopard before I upgrade all three machine's in the house.

Wow, that really looks unbelievable, congrats on an amazing job. That's just about the most perfect kitchen computer, and definitely the nicest looking I've ever seen.

This morning I sat at the bench on one of the stools and read some news on the iMac whilst having some toast... works a treat!

Growl enabled appliances, now that is using your head! hah

maybe some kind of app that reads barcodes and knows when the fridge needs milk, or something. hrmmmm

thus far the most common use for the machine has been recipe's, and streaming iTunes throughout the house when entertaining. Our friends love it... guests always flip out when they see it, it's pretty neat!

I think I can now safely say that the kitchen is 100% finished. I also installed a new glass shelf over the weekend, as well as the two better power points (at each end).. it was a busy one!

Next room to get more attention is the 'cinema' room hehehe 😀
 
The future has arrived...

...my wife and I just saw a documentary last week about a new fridge that knows not only what's inside of it and the expiration dates for everything, but that in addition will automatically order your groceries to pre-set inventories from your local internet delivery grocer. As you suggest, it does indeed work off of a multidirectional barcode reader, and then uses a bluetooth connection to a computer loaded with the appropriate software to verify the inventory and place the orders.

I don't know where to buy one, but it would look great in your kitchen 🙂 .
 
Cybix, I was inspired to do the same thing when I saw your thread, but unfortunately the spot in my kitchen is a mere 6 inches wide, and while that isn't the problem, since it would allow for a greater angle of rotation from side to side, there is nothing off the right side for 2 feet back, but the left side has a kitchen cabinet less than 2 inches back. Mounting an iMac would render the right side door of that cabinet virtually unopenable. Not to mention it just wouldn't look right. Oh well, some dreams die quite quickly.

Based on the position of the stove, and being under the deep cabinets, that corner was pretty much dead space. An old gumdrop iMac fit perfectly. With an AirPort card, it's a great little internet machine. Same basic use as yours. I have Safari set to Epicurious as its home page, and have CookWare Deluxe as my recipe software. (I've been using CookWare for about 10 years on various computers. At a previous house, I used an SE/30 as my kitchen computer.)

The keyboard has been replaced with roll-up waterproof one (a local Mac reseller has a Mac-specific one,) and the mouse replaced with an Apple Wireless Mouse that has been sealed against spills. (Saran wrap and Elmer's glue, it's a pain to replace the batteries, but I can dunk the bugger in the bathtub now.) And, yes, Salling Clicker is used to control iTunes.

(The area is a lot cleaner now, this was taken for a friend right after a party, so the counters were a mess.)

absolutely brilliant thread! my gf loves to cook, and I love macs, so we are both excited about trying a project like this ourselves some day. Looks great!
 
Very nice setup, but my kitchen is not worthy of such investment...maybe when I graduate my next house will be ready for such an upgrade.

The iMac form factor looks much better than I expected in a wall mount - it looks as though it was designed specifically for the wall.
 
i just spent quite a bit of time browsing through this entire thread and it's absolutely beautiful.

What popped into my mind when people were mentioning controlling the iMac with Salling Clicker with a bluetooth enabled phone was that instead of using a phone, you could try out the Wii Remote which is also bluetooth enabled.

Sometime down the road, i believe the software (Darwiin Remote or Remote Buddy) would probably allow for better maneuvering around on the desktop, but at the moment, still seems a little troublesome.
 
I too am working on a similar setup. We love to cook and a Mac in the kitchen is the coolest thing! After taking a look at the various cooking apps my recommendation is YummySoup. It looks the best and is the easiest to use. Also, the full screen cooking view is hands down the best. It also requires 10.4, but we have that already!

It's not bad, and much like connessoir. I wouldn't say it's better than MacGourmet.

Probably one of my favourite features of MacGourmet is how you can add recipes. Especially the dragging and dropping of recipe ingredients and directions right off a web page into macgourmet's recipe editor. so easy, it's a joke... divider lines, main ingredient tick boxes, etc.

have you downloaded and tried MacGourmet?

I'll fiddle with yummysoup a little more... it seems nice and stable compared to connessoir which seems to do strange things sometimes (mainly with recipe images).

YummySoups is quite 'minimalist'... it has no function to export the shopping list to say a PDA or iPod (handy) among other things. I'll definately give it points for it's full screen view. It's by far better than MacGourmey's full-screen view, which is a bit odd. I think

MacGourmet offers a 'wine notes' section with wine info, tasting notes, etc, handy. clippings, notes, and really fantastic 'find/search' features. I love 'cupboard search' which lets you punch in stuff u have in your cupboard and it pulls recipes to suit what you have...

If I could build my own app:

Interface of MacGourmet or YummySoup
Fullscreen view of YummySoup
Drag-in recipes from web of MacGourmet
Export to iPod feature of Connessoir
wine notes/tasting of MacGourmet

I'm sure I could think of more things..

I might sit down and hammer these main few apps, and do some pro's, con's, screen shots, maybe a little write up and throw it in this thread.

This is starting to become the ultimate 'kitchen mac' thread! 🙂

Definately keen for people to contribute value information if they desire!

I'm definitely going to sit down and give MacGourmet a try. I imported a couple of recipes from FoodTV and it was a snap. My wife has a couple hundred recipes in Word files that I might try importing...any suggestions? I'm assuming the recipe import wizard will handle them OK. If so, they'll get my $25.
 
from word files, possible, (from any text you can see on the screen)

use the "clipping" feature (in left column)...

go in there, then just literally drag your highlighted text (whole recipe) from word (or wherever) into the clipping box..

it opens a window/dialog that lets you highlight portions of the recipe, then choose (from drop down box) what it should be pasted to (eg, name, ingredients, directions, serviings, etc)

it's actually very cool hehe, just tried it! another point for MacGourmet!

my fave feature is definately the ability to drag highlighted text from some random web recipe (say, ingredients) and drop them right into the ingredients tab whilst editing/creating a recipe... it tabulates it, it's all perfect, try it out!

I recommend downloading the lil howto clips from the macgourmet web site..

I might contact the creator and ask about a different 'chef view' it's almost the only thing I would change with this app! 🙂
 
LOL, fabulous idea! I was browsing through the forums and when I see a thread named "Kitchen iMac" I had to check it!

Anyway, congratulations! I love the concept, maybe if I can afford it somewhere in the near future I'll try it out for myself, or I could just glue my 24" iMac to the wall 🙂

on another note, re MacGourmet, and my problem with not having Tiger to run it... I spoke with the developer. There is still a Panther download available (older version of MacGourmet)...

I quickly downloaded and installed it on the iMac, works a treat! and still has loads of great functions. not quite as nice as the latest version 2, but still very very good.

best news is, if you buy a licence, the upgrade to version 2 is free... so when I get Leopard on the machines, it will be a go for version 2, most happy! will be shelling out for a licence of MacGourmet asap!

Yeah, I got it sorted earlier with a quick peek at the manual. I like the interface, now it's just time to get a second Mac so my wife can actually use it. Till then I'll be holding off on the license. But a Leopard-mini might be in our future. 🙂

great idea! I was very close to doing a mini in the kitchen instead, but would never have gotten away with it as 'cleanly' (cables)...

I bet the wife will love it, mine does 🙂 if it's organised, she loves it haha
