The new MBPs are great they double as a heater for your house. Just turn it on and go to a flash website or type a document in pages and instant heat! Don't leave it on over night though your house will burn down

My MBP runs a chilly 42C while typing a document in Word (maybe Pages is worse, not sure because I don't own it).

Watching the 1080p Dark Knight trailer in youtube it runs low 60's @ 3500 rpm fan speed (essentially silent).

It definitely gets warmer on some flash websites but with judicious fan speed adjustment it really isn't a problem.

But, hey, whatever it takes for you to think your MBP is better.

Compared to the MBA you'll have lower screen resolution, much worse graphics and a vastly slower hard drive, which is where bottle necks tend to occur. If it were me and I had to have a smaller screen I would opt for the Air and in fact, I did just that. If I need a lot of processing power, then screen size be damned, I would go with the 15" model. Given the specs on the 13" MBP I just don't understand why it exists in the Apple line up.

For the cost difference he could add an SSD. The graphics aren't going to matter for what he's doing. For that matter, the HDD probably won't matter for what he's doing. And the 1280x800 display looks good. I was hung up on resolution when I bought mine but after looking at them in person it really didn't seem that much different anyway. I'm glad I went with the MBP. The i5 makes it more future proof IMO. I also like being able to add RAM and change the HDD myself if I feel the need down the road.

The 13" i7 is super fast BUT the HDD is noisy. I've tried two models(got a replacement), equally noisy. Its like whooshing sound from the right bottom corner. My 2010 baseline 13" didn't do this so maybe you should get the baseline 13" if you can"t stand noise. When doing some video editing the fans in the back kicked in but only temporarily and it cooled down pretty quickly. So the fans are ok, it's just this other noise from the HDD. there are
More threads about this.

But hell, my new mbp is REALLY fast!:)

My 13 i7 is great. It does run a little warmer than last years model...but it's only noticeable when I'm looking (feeling) for it. The fans have kicked into high gear only twice. My 2010 never did. But for the i7, I'll take that trade off.

Get an ssd. Mine is perfectly quiet.

according to anandtech and other reviews its only worse under windows 7 but the same and slightly (and i mean slightly to the point not even worth noting) in OSX.

mine runs perfect and have had no issues with it what so ever.

It depends on what you do. I get the feeling that on a 1280x800 screen, there's a limit as to how much you'll even see the disparity in OS X, unless you're doing video editing or gaming. Some would say "why do that on a 13" MacBook Pro?" With the Mid 2010 version the answer was "because, unless you were intense about your needs for it, you could." This is slightly less of the case with these new models, but on the flip-side, if you're doing anything else, they scream. Too bad some of us actually game, video edit, or both.

On some tasks..

On some tasks the two are equally powerful. On others, the Intel HD 3000 is slightly worse than the GeForce 320M. On the tasks in which the two are equally powerful, the CPU factored in much more. The Intel HD 3000 can play games on their lowest settings faster and smoother than the GeForce 320M, but this is also due to the CPU being more powerful. On the whole, graphics performance is either just as good as before, or a tad worse. Unless we're talking about video decoding/encoding, in which case the Intel HD 3000 bests even most discrete GPUs, go figure.

finally, finally made my mind up and got a MBP ordered!
not the 2011 revision though... i just could not put up with the reported heat/fan noise.
and to be honest i would hardly touch the surface of the i5 cpu!
i will only use it for web browsing and itunes/iphone sync
been on bestbuy tonight, looking through with my fiancées father.
i saw the 2010 2.4ghz c2d MBP, which with the 15% off code i have brings it down to £805. then her dad kindly said he will buy it through his business thus saving me VAT/Tax (20%)
which means i got it for £640!!!
well chuffed with that, just got to wait for it to arrive now

Quick couple of questions:
1) can i still buy applecare for it?
2) if any problems arise with it can i take into an apple store armed with receipt or does it have to go back to bestbuy?

You can buy applecare for it up until the last day of regular (1 year) warranty. Best prices are Amazon that I've found.

No need to take it back to Best Buy, and don't buy their BS "Geek Squad" warranty. Go real applecare.
