About a month ago I was as talking to Kohl's 800 operator, as my mom had lost her Kohl's card. It was my understanding that Kohls stores would also begin to accept payment in store with AMEX via Apple Pay. (We prefer AMEX as the loyalty points are worth more than other kickbacks.)

What I want is to be able to tap my phone at Walgreens so I don't have to enter my phone number to get points.
Hopefully that's still coming this year.

To get the most out of purchases, users simply add participating rewards and store-issued cards to the Wallet app and seamlessly use them at checkout with Apple Pay. This fall, more than 80 million active members of Walgreens Balance Rewards program, the nation’s largest drugstore loyalty program, will be able to easily and securely use their rewards with Apple Pay.

I've been using my Cabelas credit card with Apple Pay for awhile now, unless this is a different type of card I wouldn't say it's first store branded card.

Depends on who issues the card. I'm guessing your card was issued by a bank/financial institution, whereas the Kohl's card is probably issued by the store itself. But I could be wrong.

[edit] I see that a number of other people already answered your question similarly.

They're all issued by banks, it's just that until now the card had to have a brand logo (Visa/MC/Discover/AmEx) to be added to Apple Pay.

I went to add my Kohl's card (for which my wife is the primary holder) and it wouldn't let me. I called and was able to verify the account, but they guy wouldn't verify it to the phone without first talking to her. That process seems totally crazy.

Hope to see the rewards cards getting added soon, too. I'm looking at you, Panera.

Just use their iPhone app to place a rapid pickup order on your way to the store. You're using Apple Pay, the order is included in your Panera Rewards, and the order will be ready within 10 minutes so you don't have to wait in line. I do this all the time now - haven't stood in line at a Panera in ages.

Won't matter in a few months but Discover only gets you the 10% bonus if you use Apple Pay in the store (and not in app).

Add your Walgreens card to Wallet, and they just need to scan it. No need to give them your phone number.

My comment is based upon... considering myself to be "the average consumer." I haven't stepped foot in a Kohl's in years. Plus Walmart and Amazon seems to be putting just about every other retailer out of business.

I also consider myself an average consumer, and I shop at Kohl's regularly. Clothes are one of the few things that still benefit from a brick and mortar try it on experience, something Amazon does not provide. And I've learned the hard way that discount clothes from places like Wal-Mart and Target are never worth it in the long run.

I've found the opposite. There's a wider selection of sizes available online. I even recall seeing a sign once in Sears which showed the expanded online range. The clothes I get online fit better than the ones I get in store.

Never bothered with Walmart or Target for clothes unless it was an emergency where I needed it. Every Target purchased pants I have torn within a few months.

I feel like I have a toxic body or somethings as even my $112 jeans tore in a few months.

Now back on topic Apple Pay...

The thing with Apple Pay is that its so cumbersome at some of these locations. I have an iPhone 6, and completely forgot about the ApplePay/wallet add-on that came with this phone. So I tried to use it at a Subway location today, and like so many other people have stated in the past, it did not work flawlessly the first time.

At first I thought it had to do with my print, wasn't the issue. The cashier asked me to try again, like 4 more times. Then she had to ask the other cashier why it wasn't working and turns out they had to press something on their terminal first before I could even swipe it everytime. So essentially I would have to ask them everytime (assuming they know how to use it) if they have or know how to use ApplePay. It honestly took way longer than just pulling out my debit/credit card and swiping, which I had began reaching for...

This is something I have been confused about since they announced store-issued cards in Wallet. Let's say I have my default Visa credit card in Wallet already and then I add a Kohl's card. If I check out at Kohl's using Apple Pay, will it automatically pick my Kohl's card? This would honestly be the only way I can imagine that would incentivize people to set up more than one card in Wallet.

That's not the point. The Kohl's store card (not a Visa, Mastercard, etc) is now supported in Wallet/Apple Pay.
No it won't work. The Khols card is 18 digits long. So yes, the terminal will read it (even the super old ones can) but the register system will simply say "no support" or something like that. It's the same thing if you were to swipe a Khols card at the wrong merchant.
