Long term, owning the software will be the moat. Building the car itself is where many of the auto industry is focused on but they can't pull off a better software dev. process than Apple or Google.

“IF” Apple go into the automotive market it’ll be on the back of another global manufacturer.
The fact that Korea is mentioned leaves my bet with Hyundai and in particular the E-GMP platform.
Apple can run their own styling/software/battery management/programming and integration but not be reliant on a massive manufacturing infrastructure. I drive the new Hyundai Ionic 5 that is based on the E-GMP platform, it’s by far one of the best EV platforms available and will supersede anything Tesla can throw at it and will be a world leader in EV technology.

The people asking why Apple is entering this market are funny. Clearly these people are not creators. When you create for a living, you don’t just stop because of how much money you’ve made. It’s what drives your purpose in life.

Second, Apple is probably envisioning that the car of the future will be completely autonomous, in which case the car will turn into essentially a mobile living room. So why would Apple NOT want to be involved? They have the opportunity and resources to integrate the entire Apple ecosystem into this new environment.

Once we get to completely autonomous cars, I don't see them being for sale to end users at that point. Why would Apple sell you a car that can drive itself for 30K when they could make multiples of that renting the car out for rides themselves?

i have a performance, doesn't hold value as well. i haven't gotten any quotes that make it worth it.
That’s interesting. I wonder why. I mean, the only thing I can think of, is there’s not any real major differentiators from the Long range model, obviously with the exception of the 20” wheels, larger brakes, I believe a carbon spoiler, faster 0-60 time, but maybe the price difference just isn’t worth any interest to a consumer who is perfectly fine with a LR model where they can save a few thousand, and have similar efficiency.

AI + Battery + Interior + A gadget that you can fit into - all that makes this perfect for Apple to get into.

As someone smart up there said, the market cap of Apple is so high because investors believe Apple will continue to expand.

I, for one, like the car direction a whole lot more than the bodily probes of their "health" arm - Apple needs to stay out of health as I am concerned, because it's not health, it's profiting from sickness; that being said, I am well aware they will continue to get into it - chasing the large amount of dollars that can be found there.

The car industry - it's hard to get into but Tesla opened up all their patents - if Apple can get over its NIH (not invented here) syndrome, they would be well advised to do something really un-apple, copy everything they can!

But why it's worth it - there's only Tesla, the existing car companies are not going to turn around that quickly, and most won't make the transition to electric. These car companies are heavily invested in their successes, meaning the ICE engines, and history has shown again and again that it takes a very rare company to reinvent its products inside out.

Apple + Tesla to dominate auto industry. Not a given, but a good enough chance Apple really can't afford to skip it.

Apple should be opening up a gigafactory in Nevada. Weird that they don't.... also seems strange to me how they're still hell bent on outsourcing their tech. It's been working well for them, but the system has developed cracks, and it makes Apple dependent on foreign governments, which is a bad long term strategy. They have so much cash, they could easily build one of those robot factories...

yeah i think this is the likely reason. LR -> performance isn't worth the price for most people, especially when they can get a performance boost for far cheaper.
